Why is there currently 1 hour difference between GMT & Dublin time?

    Because current Dublin time is Summer Time

    I thought Ireland always matches UK time and UK time is same as GMT???

    British Summer Time doesn't match GMT. GMT is fixed, as there are many countries the world over who don't bother with changing the clocks

    It does. It's the same time in London as in Dublin or do you think something else?

    Not at the moment we're not. It's WEST (Western European Summer Time) here atm.

    Is it right to say GMT doesn't shift hours forward/back for Summer/Winter.

    So our Winter time in Ireland is same as GMT but in Summer it differs by an hour?

    Hence when BBC 1 oclock news comes on in summer, it aint actually 1 oclock GMT?

    Was this always the case?

    Correct.

    There have been some deviations over the years but for the best part of the past 40/50 years it has been this way.

    Yes, it's one o'clock BST.

    There is an hour difference between here and France. When on BST, are we then on the same time or, are they now 2 hours ahead?

    No. They change their clocks the same time as us. They use Central European Time/Summer Time, iirc.

    People in the equator don't change their times because they don't lose much daylight during the 'winter' months. There's no point in them changing clocks

    So during summer they would be 2* hours behind rather than 1*?

    It sure is confusing in today's IT world.

    Some of my navigation apps need to be UTC [GMT] +1. However, apps depending on the accuracy of the nav gear must then be manually adjusted -1 to display the correct time.

    Atomic clocks and satellites will also display UTC [GMT} +1 OR set UTC [GMT] and display the wrong time.

    It also causes havoc on forums especially during breaking news or fast moving weather ~ posts are often taken as evidence of event time etc.

    Its not that difficult to understand. GMT is constant, it doesn't change. Ourselves and the UK are on GMT during the winter, and move to GMT+1 during the summer. Similarly, France, Spain, Germany etc are on GMT +1 during the winter and move to GMT +2 during the summer
