British Summer Time doesn't match GMT. GMT is fixed, as there are many countries the world over who don't bother with changing the clocks

Hence when BBC 1 oclock news comes on in summer, it aint actually 1 oclock GMT?

Correct.

There have been some deviations over the years but for the best part of the past 40/50 years it has been this way.

No. They change their clocks the same time as us. They use Central European Time/Summer Time, iirc.

People in the equator don't change their times because they don't lose much daylight during the 'winter' months. There's no point in them changing clocks

It sure is confusing in today's IT world.

Some of my navigation apps need to be UTC [GMT] +1. However, apps depending on the accuracy of the nav gear must then be manually adjusted -1 to display the correct time.

Atomic clocks and satellites will also display UTC [GMT} +1 OR set UTC [GMT] and display the wrong time.

It also causes havoc on forums especially during breaking news or fast moving weather ~ posts are often taken as evidence of event time etc.

Its not that difficult to understand. GMT is constant, it doesn't change. Ourselves and the UK are on GMT during the winter, and move to GMT+1 during the summer. Similarly, France, Spain, Germany etc are on GMT +1 during the winter and move to GMT +2 during the summer

France and Spain are one hour ahead of us. Let's say France uses a summer time setting but Spain doesn't. If I travelled to France in the summer I would set my clock one hour on. If you travelled to Spain in the summer, what time would you set your clock to?

They lose the same amount of daylight in mid winter as mid summer.

Spain would be on the same time as BST, and IST in Summer. YOu wouldn't have to change your clocks.

The Irish summer time is IST. It follows the same change dates as BST but it may not in future.

Why do people not know this?

By the way, the BBC world service transmits on GMT. So get to a radio and get weirded out by the fact that they think they are an hour behind.

Thats the real local time, but we are talking about time zones. However if you ever find a map to buried treasure in, or around Dublin, from the mid 19th century ( or earlier) and it says to dig where a specific shadow is cast in the ground at 4pm on July 4th, dont start digging until 5:30 pm IST.

I know yeah but it's something a lot of people don't realise and kind of relevant to the thread. You've just used it yourself to describe how a time zone works.
