Yes I know several people who identify as Asexual.
For some it is just how they are and it never changes, other's go through periods of being asexual and just having no interest in sex and are not just sexually attracted to anyone.

I was considering myself to be asexual for a while. I'm not, I just have some pretty severe hangups about sex, which isn't really the same thing but for a while I did consider quite seriously that I was asexual.

I don't know anyone else who is asexual though

I was, considered myself asexual and was in practical terms for most of my twenties. I genuinely wasn't interested in sex but I think I was always one of those very deep people :o and the physical never really came anywhere near close enough to satisfying my needs. It doesn't mean I don't crave intimacy but that there didn't seem to be anybody around who was capable of providing what I was looking for. I sorta made up for it in my thirties.

Surely a lot of people who appear to be asexual may be just suffering from some kind of hormone deficiency ?

Suffering from it? I suffered from normal feelings being asexual would have spared me a lot.

There seems to be quite a bit of scepticism about asexuality here. Why is that? Shouldn't homosexuality be looked at in the same way?

No, because with homosexuality, there is still the presence of desire and lust. I suppose maybe it has to do with hormones. Asexual people, maybe don't have the same level of hormones, as it is hormones that attracts us to others.

I wonder is there a sex drive scale where people answer questions relating to their sexual behaviour and is it a case that if you fall below a certain point on the scale you're considered to be practically asexual? The biology of it would be that those who are sexually very active would have taken lots of risks in the wild, left lots of offspring quickly but died young due to risk taking, while those with low sex drive leave offspring slowly but live longer and so reproduce over a longer lifespan due to minimal risk taking. You'd need patience with the latter!

So once there's a presence of lust & desire then it can't be called a hormonal imbalance or viewed as something which can be treated/reversed?

Do you think homosexuality can be 'treated' or 'reversed'?!

everyone knows a woman with lots of cats, so the answer is yes
Actually those women are might be more likely to be promiscuous.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toxoplasmosis#Behavioral_changes
Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease caused by the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii.[1] The parasite infects most genera of warm-blooded animals, including humans, but the primary host is the felid (cat) family.

Female carriers are suggested to be more outgoing, friendly, more promiscuous, and are considered more attractive to men compared with non-infected controls.

No, that's not really what I'm getting at. Do you think asexuality can be treated? I just think it's interesting that people can say that one is treatable but the other not.

What are you getting at? I'm having a slow day, you will have to be patient and 100% clear with me! :P

I don't think it can be no. I don't know of anyone who is asexual, but I looked it up there and Wikipedia gives a short list of people who have apparently claimed to be asexual. I imagine it's similar to homosexuality, in that, you are born with it or you're not. I guess if it's to do with a hormone imbalance, then hormones could be injected to counteract this...... I don't know to be honest.

Hmm, I think you cant tell if someone is asexual or not by their perceived sexual habits. They may be riding the Rabbit all night and day for all you know.

Does the Rabbit count and if so does using it often make you a slut?!
