Apparently 1 percent of people are asexual. Have you over met anyone who could be?

I always presumed 'asexual' related to our perceptions of others.

For example, in the way that you would find your best friend or family 'asexual'.

I can't imagine being asexual. I think it would be worse than losing my sight or hearing.

Yup. I know a girl aged 38 who has never had a boy friend, shows no interest in men what so ever despite several advances from men over the years. She isnt gay either as i know of a few girls who have made moves on her over the years to no avail.
She is a really attractive girl and a twin and her twin sister must have got the full share of lust going as she was a man eater and is now happily married.

That's my understanding of it too.

I'd have said I'd be asexual when it comes to mates GF's and wives and I've a few female mates who I'd never think of in any sort of sexual way regardless how attractive they may be.

I would've thought asexual as meaning like an animal without female or male reproductive organs. though I'd have to google if such a thing exists.

yep i know a somebody like this.

would have thought its higher than 1% also.

    ah, here we go:

    a·sex·u·al (-sksh-l)
    adj.
    1. Having no evident sex or sex organs; sexless.
    2. Relating to, produced by, or involving reproduction that occurs without the union of male and female gametes, as in binary fission or budding.
    3. Lacking interest in or desire for sex.

I know a guy who seems like that. He never seems to have had a girlfriend, and I've known people from all walks of his life who've never known of a girl (or guy) in his life.

Now that just might mean he's shy or not good with girls, but he never seemed to show any interest in girls when out, and would sometimes come out with a story of past love or a celebrity he fancied but it never sounded genuine at all, just an attempt to prove he likes girls.

Someone who swears by their gaydar is certain he's in the closet, but I've never got that impression from him.
He just has no air of sexuality or sexual interest about him, like a kid rather than someone in denial.

    3. Lacking interest in or desire for sex.

does that include **** though? or even desires but for some reason cant bring themselves to have sex?

either way there is 50,000 of them over here

People often answer questions about it on Reddit, They say they can like people, get on with them, but just not want have sex with anyone. Think of when your a child and the idea of sex and having a boyfriend/girlfriend holds no appeal, its just someone who never leaves that state.
They can still masturbate as that doesn't require sexual thoughts, its just 'scratching an itch'.

When I was a teenager most of my schoolmates had the stereotypical obsession with the opposite sex that all teenagers supposedly have however there were a few who never seemed to display much interest in the topic. Possibly they were gay (while there was no real evidence* for this its not something most people in smalltown Ireland back in the day would exactly be shouting from the rooftops) or shy (probably waiting for the time they could drink legally) or late starters or just the kind of people who had the good sense to keep their personal lives to themselves (and were probably getting more than the rest of us put together -jammy buggers).

Never really maintained contact with them so never did get to find out but I suspect theres a lot folks who dont really bother until their late teens/twenties.

    * With one exception but very few people knew

It also includes lack of sexual attraction. Some do have sex drive, they're just not attracted to anything in particular.

Yes I know several people who identify as Asexual.
For some it is just how they are and it never changes, other's go through periods of being asexual and just having no interest in sex and are not just sexually attracted to anyone.

I was considering myself to be asexual for a while. I'm not, I just have some pretty severe hangups about sex, which isn't really the same thing but for a while I did consider quite seriously that I was asexual.

I don't know anyone else who is asexual though

I was, considered myself asexual and was in practical terms for most of my twenties. I genuinely wasn't interested in sex but I think I was always one of those very deep people :o and the physical never really came anywhere near close enough to satisfying my needs. It doesn't mean I don't crave intimacy but that there didn't seem to be anybody around who was capable of providing what I was looking for. I sorta made up for it in my thirties.

Surely a lot of people who appear to be asexual may be just suffering from some kind of hormone deficiency ?

Suffering from it? I suffered from normal feelings being asexual would have spared me a lot.

There seems to be quite a bit of scepticism about asexuality here. Why is that? Shouldn't homosexuality be looked at in the same way?

No, because with homosexuality, there is still the presence of desire and lust. I suppose maybe it has to do with hormones. Asexual people, maybe don't have the same level of hormones, as it is hormones that attracts us to others.
