    Also, the Vietnamese are smarter than us. As are the Armenians, Ukrainians, and Mongolians.

    At least we're smarter than Somalia.

    Linky

    It seems we're the dumbest in Western Europe.

    The Mongolians are a great bunch of lads.

    So according to this, the average person in Equatorial Guinea is mentally retarded. Interesting. In fairness, 92 for Ireland is pretty bad. We have the lowest IQs in Western Europe. FFS, even the Americans have higher IQs than us.

    They always knock down my wall though

    Irish people have a over inflated belief that they are actually smart compared to people from other countries

    You do realise that table is 6 years old or are you trying to be funny?

    It's handy being half Danish and half Irish. In this sort of thing, I can take the high ground and suddenly be 15 IQ points smarter by calling myself Danish, and when people call Danish dull and sensible, I can instantly become the life of the party by calling myself Irish. Amazing, really.

    The UK is surprisingly high on that list, considering its population and general trends in education. Not shocked about Ireland's position at all on that list.

    'Seems' you say? Which is nothing more that a matter of individual perception. Perception and reality are not the same thing. Likewise, Wikepedia and reality are quite often not the same thing.

    This is a perfect case of when correlation does mean causation. Just the other way around from what's suggested by Lynn.

    You think we could be further down the list or nearer the top?

    Hey... I know somebody directed me to the criticism section of the Wiki article. I already read it and I know the methodology is dodgy. But just discuss it anyways to fcuk and stop attacking me.

    If we did selective sampling, like France, Japan, the Netherlands and Germany, we would be much higher up. I believe we had a wide scale sample (As did the UK and Canada) in which 1000+ kids were sampled, along with a few hundred adults, whereas the countries listed above had a much more selective testing done (Less than 50 subjects for the averages).

    We were also bang on average in spacial IQ and had a higher than average verbal IQ, IIRC.

    That makes more sense, no way we are the dumbest in Western Europe.

    Why, who is dumber in Western Europe?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,514 ✭✭✭PseudoFamous

    Some other stuff I just remembered about this ranking is that many countries were estimated, notably N. Korea, and nearly every country had it's own test, which made the results mostly incomparable. Some countries surveyed different age groups of kids to others (Ireland's kids were 8-9, UK's were 11-12). Can't think of much else atm, but I might have a dig around for my notes on the bewk.

    yeah i think we'd be nearer the bottom than top tbh, i'd say some of the countries mentioned above are miles ahead of us: france, germany, the netherlands

    Once again, selective testing. We had a widescale testing, which likely included some areas and schools with detrimental environmental effects on development of IQ, whereas in the countries I mentioned, the testing was incredibly narrow, from one area or school, reducing the likelihood of the results being accurate, and moreso weighted in order to make the country look more impressive in intelligence.

    Considering the amount of gargle, flouride, wham bars and tv we consume I'm not all that surprised.

    yeah maybe that test isn't that accurate then if it has been done in the way your saying but i wasn't making that comment on that test though, i don't think Irish people are that intelligent

    For anyone that can't be bothered reading the table:
    Asia=Smart
    Africa=Stupid

    I'm sure its a very credible piece of research.
