My sister-in-law's family live in Long Island, with her grandparents living on the beach. Luckily my brother and his wife are at a wedding out of state so they should be alright!

I remember that storm in 98. The waves were so powerful that it tore a massive chunk from the pier in Barna.

    Lucky they closed the airports,
In fact they gave the grounded fleet of F-22s a one time clearance to GTFO of Andrews. Both fleets were grounded/recalled for design flaws.

you don't have to be an expert to see that this storm would have blown itself out by the time it reaches new york, it came ashore as barely a category 1 so less than i expected, there will hardly be enough wind to fly a kite by the time it reaches new york

if we were to believe the media/us government/us president/our own government last decade iraq was minutes away from being able to launch weapons of mass destruction, sars, swine flu etc would kill millions, there was no chance of recession in ireland..........

It is this type of attitude which gets people killed or injured and put the lives of emergency services in unnecessary danger.

Better to prepare for the worst and if it is not as bad as expected what harm is done, your weekend plans might be a bit disrupted but better than being injured etc.

The storm is also hundreds of miles wide so it is not something which will pass over in a couple of hours. It will be hours / day of high winds and up to over 6 feet rain at the very worst. The storm is only moving 12 miles per hour so that adds to the severity

Have you seen the pics from space it really does look like pictures from Day After Tomorrow.

This is NYC which rarely stops for anything so when the Mayor declares manadtory evacuation for the first time in the city history you need to heed advice and not say "oh it all blow over."

so what you just shut the entire new york metro area down because a storm MIGHT hit it, what happens if a storm looks to be on the way next weekend we do the same thing and the week after and the week after

storms been downgraded to category one so its bascially a tropical storm as of now and WILL get weaker and weaker

as yes i saw the nasa video and it was cool and so is this which also looks like day after tomorrow but we all didn't freeze to death back then http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8447023.stm

Low pressure with winds allow the water to rise by meters,so i think the precautions are very much required.

There is no MIGHT about it. A storm is GOING TO HIT the New York / NYC tomorrow. The problem is there is no definite way to predict the severity of it but the experts are saying there is a high possibility of severe floodding and damage. I wouldn't like to be in a subway system if it starts to flood, would you?

So as it is a rare occurance and as I said before the first time in the city's history mandatory evacuations have been put in place, I think the city and it's officals are right to be putting these measures in place.

People not heeding warnings are being very foolish and putting themselves in danger.

Anyway unless you live in NYC why the hell does it bother you if they put the warings in place. Does not affect you.

So I would take the advice of actual experts / people who have experience of these things and not "so called experts" on a discussion board.

The base word is "History", which doesn't Have a silent H.

Penfailed is correct, and he has already provided you with a link.

Just because you don't know something doesn't mean it is not true.

Well I'm sitting in my bedroom in Lower East Manhattan. It's pretty warm out, hasn't rained in nearly three hours.

EDIT: Obviously it starts raining five minutes after I post this.

Ah, I'm on the fourth floor, be grand. Stopped raining again.

There has been some amount of hype though in the media. Looking at this NY Times map, by the time it gets up to NY it's going to be Category 1 or Tropical. They're saying there might be loss of power, but it's not certain yet. The low lying areas have been evacuated, and it's expected to be a bright sunny day then by Monday. Hell I even got sunburnt yesterday!

Took a trip to the local 24 hour supermarket last night at about 3am and it was packed! They were all out of bagels and almost out of cookies. Good to see people were picking up the essentials ;) I think a lot of New Yorkers are just pissed that the weekend is ruined. Second last weekend in summer, people tend to head to the beach.

    BBC News:
    19:05(GMT):
Another fatality in this storm: officials say winds toppled a tree and sent it crashing through an apartment building in Virginia, killing an 11-year-old boy, AP reports.

    rip.
    20:31(gmt):
Some people appear unwilling to leave areas of New York in the line of the storm. City Councilman Michael Nelson, whose Brooklyn district includes Brighton Beach is quoted by the Reuters agency as saying: "My sense is that the majority of the people are staying put," He said about 50,000 people in his district had been ordered to evacuate.

I am in Boston and it is lashing rain and there is plenty of thunder and lighting. Nothing too scary yet. Meant to be lasting up until Monday Morning, so am going to be confined to my room till then

Tip of the century for those about to flood..... when the water gets up to the level of your doorstep, shut the doors and use the windows to go in and out.

That way you keep the flotsam out, believe me theres a massive difference on the mornin after. With closed doors, the water still gets in but is filtered through the building and has no sediment in it. With open doors your house becomes part of the sewer system.

You want my 2 cents on this one ? The are overblowing the preparations and deliberately so. This is all to do with Obama showing he is not being complacent like Bush was with Katrina. There's an election coming up after all.

Also heard something of NY Mayor Bloomberg not dealing/preparing for a huge snow storm last Winter, so he's not taking any chances for criticism this time? Gone all out, and frankly scare mongering. Subway has been shut since noon today, and we've barely had a breeze all evening.

Cant believe they made it illegal to stay in a low lying area , just so the officials cant be accused of being complaicent
(cue shot of Obama with sleeves rolled up in a shelter)
