Sigh - no touchpad for me. I guess I'll just have to stick with using either my laptop, or my pc, or my games console, or my phone to browse the internet.

    .....I hate my life.

haha... this is my first post in this thread, but I couldn't help bursting out laughing! :)

That really sums it all up ... haha

still trying to get one myself so! ;)

It's good because even without the apps what's bad about a €99 browser. I mean there's cloud reader and more. So it's cheaper than a kindle. Other things are it could be a touch screen clock radio coughcoughsonydashcoughcough.

I think even worse comes to worse I'd hook up speakers to it and keep it plugged in and play my tunes on it like a big music player touch screen fancy good lookin' system.

    It costs €99.

But seriously, I have plenty of tech to fulfil my browsing needs (Laptop, Desktop, Phone, Playstation, and now even my TV), I don't see what the mad obsession is in buying this for more than €100. It's not worth it.

Its madness seeing people bidding 200 for these on ebay.

99 euro with the hope of android being ported to it. Anything more and its not worth the risk.
As a "lucky person" who posted above that he paid 7 quid for a media player on his shinny new touchpad, these are free on android! Keep paying for those apps and you would have been better off buying a purpose built android tablet that will be supported for years by the manufacturer.

Thats how much for the touchpad + apps. It all adds up.
Might not be such a good bargain after all

Id imagine alot of these people will be a tad disappointed/surprised when they figure out how WEBOS works.

meow, you wouldn't be talking this nonsense if you got out of bed and bought one. Ooooh, an extra 7 euro, I feel so "stupid" now that I got a deadly tablet for 137 euro.

How do you read books? I mean rather than getting a kindle as a dedicated device you can get a touchpad and better yet. For convenience, I mean I hate when guests come over and they ask to use your tech and all your gadgets are setup with your usernames and passwords and they log you out and then it's .

Also the hardware is beautiful. No tablet out there for €99 has a dual core snap dragon processor.

a good amount of people on here all of a sudden talking about how 'Bad' webOS is etc and how up there android is on a pedestal , that we should feel humbled to live in a world where the very prospect of a touchpad running android exists, the fact of the matter is your getting a piece of kit that was up until a few days ago worth 400 euro+! It can browse the web on a 9 inch screen , view emails , facebook and has flash! And yes you may have to spend 7 quid on a media player but that's about it for the basic user who is not bothered with apps like that essential calender app which everyone is raving about and which strangely enough looks like all the other calender apps! I wonder if these people are those who didn't get one?.. Pretty sure there's an android thread somewhere ye can lurk off to and wait for a 99 euro android tab with these specs to come along! Heres betting it will be the touchpad!

As pointed out earlier, Amazon are bringing out a tablet (rumoured to be Q3 2011, but more likely Q4). Whilst no details are out there yet the following is suspected:
    - It will be the best reader out there, using a dual screen which mimics the kindle's 'e ink'.
    - Android OS
    - Priced at a loss, suspected to be approx $259 (that may also be €259, given the pricing strategies most of these companies use).

Personally, as someone who had been on the verge of buying a kindle (and only saw the advantage of a tablet as being the superb battery life), i'm waiting and feel no sadness whatsoever that I missed out on the touchpad. Too many variables have to fall into place to make it a must have, even at that price - if you managed to get one, well done.

They can't if they don't have it in stock.
If they did have it people with res got theirs afaik.

True that but your still speaking €259 which will probably nearly have the same specs as a Touchpad. So If TouchPad gets out there for €99 not only is it those apps but it CAN ALSO RUN CHUMBY APPS Which as around 4000+ since the only requirement is Flash.
Also if people are able to get Android on an iPhone 3Gs with Apples crazy CTU safeguards in place, more likely Android will be on Touchpad and the thing is it's still a great device regardless. Even if the Kindle comes out I don't want anyone but me touching that thing as I'd be logged into all of Amazons cloud service. That's why I think the touchpad will be the great "convenience" computer.

You didn't get one I take it.

WebOS continues to be supported, in fact I have had 2 OTA updates since buying mine, it's the hardware that has been dropped, not the OS.
I can't see how anyone could be disappointed with one of these at the current knock-down prices. Risk? It's 99-129 quid, hardly a life changing figure.

One thing has been consistent over the last few days and that is people (not just on here) that want one but weren't lucky or persistent enough to get one seem to resort to pointing out flaws and possible complications, purely in an attempt to console themselves. If there actually are any buyers that now feel they've been ripped off, there is a queue of people that will gladly reimburse them and take it off their hands.

If HP thought they'd get €400 for the millions of touchpads they had in stock, I'm sure they'd have charged that or as near as possible to it for them. Fact is, they were not selling at the higher prices. They may have cost €400 to make, but it doesn't seem that consumers saw them as being worth that, maybe a case of the sum of the parts exceeding that of the finished unit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,092 ✭✭✭✭Tusky

If you actually want one from ebay then don't just run out and bid on the first one you see. Most people who got one and plan on re-selling it probably havent even received theirs yet.

Over the next few days there will be tonnes of them and all the sellers will be competing with each other.

Dya think it will be possible to pick up a 32gb for around 200? Thats about as high as I'd go.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,034 ✭✭✭✭mailburner

that one on ebay is closing in and will probably go over 300

    that's madness in fairness

I wouldn't be too disappointed either but it can't be argued that it's not a brilliant deal with it obviously is. The general hype around it just shows how good a deal it is (although the huge hype is a bit much considering it is just a tablet after all!). You can overclock it to 1.5Ghz (and probably more) as well. The specs are good and the price is great. Also all these variables will inevitably fall into place I'd imagine given the big userbase that it now has. Even if it doesn't get ported to android it's still good for what it does. Someone will probably jailbreak it anyway so you won't even have to buy apps if you want to be that tight!

They costed around $320 to make for the 16GB with iFixit prices. Add labour then your talking around $335 with packaging, manuals, manufacturing.

    For everyone

If the price looks to be only a tiny leg off an iPad just get the iPad 2.
I think everyone is forgetting the reason why Android is big on phones it's because a phone is a necessity and Android is on all the cheap smartphones. Where as Tablets and music players are "Luxury devices" and if your in the market for the "Luxury Device" And you see the touchpad there for €399 and an iPad for €479 why not get the Apple, I can not provide any big reason why not to, Apple has a strategy here especially in Ireland as there's the big thing iTunes that everyone who has a music player probably uses. They have a music store, a FILM store and HP has none of that here in more less in the States.

Onto some other opinions I think HP released the touchpad too early, they should have focused on their phones and made a strategy.

It's cheaper than a top end digital photo frame. For browsing it's like an iPad, only better as it has flash. Browsing on a phone is a pain in the ass, you can't bring your desktop/PS3 with you when you're heading away for the weekend or are on a train/plane and the battery life on most laptops is less than half the life of the tablet.

    It's certainly worth €200.

Preware has been available for ages. No 'rooting' or 'jailbreaking' required.

Totally agree! I intend to use mine (if argos honour my reservation ;)) for travelling. Its lighter than a lappy and I dont risk damaging my main use pc. I am looking forward to looking for jobs when I am next in the UK as it will slip nicely into my handbag!
Also having spent 3hours watching movies on my sons PSP on our last flight, I will love it just to watch movies whilst travelling on a screen bigger than a gnats wotsit!

You will need to go into your local argos and try. if its not 'available' on the day you need to get them to check their back up systems to see if it will be in during your reservation period. If they say no, complain to the manager and get them to ring their tech support. If they are still saying no, then get them to extend the reservation as at some point they will get some into stock. HQ seem to be a bit hit and miss dealing with this, I had a bad experience others had a great one. TBH my local store was much more helpful when I complained!

your missing the whole point , the fact is if two weeks ago i woke up and decided hey I really like that touchpad that HP released, which I'm sure someone around the world did as it wasnt the case HP sold 0 units before the fire sale you would have strolled into argos or wherever and paid 400 Plus, and yet two days ago I took said stroll and got one for myself for 99! That is the very nature of a bargin, its not what the company thinks the unit is worth, its forecasted sales or reputation etc, its how much money you saved in purchasing!

Hp did not say they are killing webOS. They are getting out of the hardware manufacture business - margins are too low. This firesale will boost webOS and who knows it might take off as a quickboot option on laptops. They have asserted that the touchpad will get updated and I have no reason to be incredulous.

just picked up a message from Argos in Sligo. Had a reservation for a 32gb version with both email and text message. However Argos are cancelling the reservation as there was a "system error" in the warehouse....will be calling them in the morning but not holding out much hope.

for all those touchpad ''haters'' out there.... just (finally) spoke to my cousin who knows his stuff on these things and apparently his whole IT dept are trying to get hold of the touchpad so they can be all bad.......

OMG, more than fingers crossed for me tomorrow! Might have to leave my work early tomorrow!

Not sure how much of a silly question this is but I read on one of the MANY websites I found that people who had bought a touchpad at the higher price before the firesale were reimbursed the difference or total amount. If that's the case, will people who pay/sneakilly get charged the full price by expansys or other retailers be able to get a rebate from HP?

I don't know man, the touchpad has a 1.3 megapixel webcam, iPad has .3 megapixel I think? HP also has a better and faster processor, the same resolution screen. Not as many apps but at least you can set it up without being a slave to i-tunes. Its way handier to put music and videos onto than having to sync with i-tunes. Just throw whatever you want onto it. And for anyone who hasnt actually spent an hour messing with a HP touchpad, don't knock it. The webOS works really well, I was all android android android before I got this and now it wouldn't bother me to just use the webos.
