300-400 Irish travellers in illegal British campsite: should they be evicted?

The deadline for the 300-400 Irish traveller families living on an illegal campsite in Basildon, Essex is seven days away: if they have not left by 31 August they will be evicted. Many travellers have been offered alternative accommodation, and the cost of the clean-up after them is expected to reach £9.5 million.

Over on The Irish Times this afternoon it seems that Amnesty International has stepped in asking for the eviction to be stopped: Call to halt travellers' UK eviction.

I can't imagine Amnesty being inundated with donations from that locality now. Anyway, there is some 1000 travellers living in the campsite, which is divided into a legal and illegal section. It is the largest traveller camp in Britain and is known as Dale Farm (cue remedial jokes about ice cream).

Do you think they should be forcibly removed from the site if they refuse to leave it by 31 August?

No, they own the land and should be allowed to use it as they wish

Yes, they are taking the piss and should abide by the same planning laws as everybody else

They're not being turfed out just for a laugh. The place isn't suitable for accommodating so many people. If they want to stay they should go through the proper channels and ensure that they adhere to council regulations.

They should be allowed to stay as they'll probably come back over here and do whatever it is they do...which we all know but arent allowed to say.

The key word in the thread title being illegal, so yes they should definately be evicted.

No matter how ignorant of the law they are, it still applies to them.

I hope the Government over there have the balls to evict them. Remember a few years ago when we had to pay travellers to get off council property?

This is travellers we are talking about here.

No, they might come back to Ireland.

most 'irish' travellers in the uk have hardly been to ireland in the first place. they are so cut off from the rest of the community (more or less self imposed) that they just keep the irish accents that their ancestors had.

and yes, they should be evicted.

Aye, but believe it or not; many of them do comply with the wishes of town councils and police etc. There's plenty of legal halting sites in the UK.

If it's an illegal place and other UK citizens would be turfed out then these travellers should also be evicted!

I hate the hypocrisy of most of the people who defend travellers- one the one hand they want them to have ever right any other citizen has, on the other hand they want to rules to be bent to suit them. fück em out i say.

Absolutely. Evict any in an illegal position.

I can't see any reason not to evict.

Was anybody on AH really going to speak up for them?

    Doesn't look too bad?

It's the Sheridan clan of travellers that own the plot. It's the other 86 families living there are the issue, living in an unauthorized site.

Just because they're Travellers doesn't mean they're above the law.
They were givin a chance to get alternative accommodation for them and they balls that up. Turf them out.

I'd be surprised if some of them left only with their own stuff.

Doesn't look too bad at all there. I remember seeing a program about the place a couple of years ago and it looked squalid. But yeah, they don't have permission to be there and are quite rightly going to be evicted. I dunno why it took 10 years.. I can understand their reluctance to leave after being there for so long, but it's their own doing.
