1 pint maybe, or even two but isn't 4 pints quite a lot to drink in the space of a lunchbreak? I don't think the French and Spanish would have that much, would they? (I have a suspicion the OP isn't entirely serious but I'm still interested)

Obviously you have never been to a typical french/spanish home, they would go through about 2 to 3 bottles of table wine a day. Starting at lunch, mind you they do have a lot of small meals throughout the day. The spanish are cretins for getting in some naps after their main meals though:D

    Nothing at all.
Unless of course you have to go back and do a job that will give you a warning/fire you if caught.
And especially if your alcohol intake compromises your ability to do your job.

Is spending part of your working day on sites like this not every bit as much cause for a warning/being fired than having a couple of pints at lunch time?

If the man wants to have a pint or four let him, it's not you that will get a warning or be fired. And sure if he IS fired for drinking, lesson learned. Jeez, ye would swear it actually is rocket science at times.

    Bloody nation of alchos.
Seriously, can you not manage to get through the work day without having "a few sneakys at lunchtime"?

Loads of other nations have drink on their lunch break as a norm. Of the counties i have been to, Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany and Spain, you'd always see some workers heading out for a drink at lunch time. Its no big deal, just a beer or a wine. I dont think its a need to drink alcohol, its a want!

In Ireland we do have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol, but thats another thread entirely.

I used to do it when I was working in town, have a pint or two of a Friday lunch time, not every friday. It was nice to relax, unwind at the end of a week. Same way as just going out for lunch without drinking alcohol would be

Lunchtime pints aren't really a normal done thing in this country. I don't know about anyone else, but two pints and I couldn't give a crap about work, I'll never get any good work done if I've been drinking at lunchtime. Only done it once or twice - when we go out for a "team lunch". Even then, it would be two glasses of wine at most.
But even that small amount of alcohol you're not even tipsy but still just running out the clock for the rest of the day.

I have no idea how people can go to the pub on a regular basis for lunch and still go back and do another half day's work. Maybe one drink. Definitely not more than that.

Rubbish. Stick your PC nonsense, a glass of wine at work lunch is common in france, spain, italy or a beer in austria, germany etc, a pint at lunch does not equal a "nation of alcoholics" that is reasonable mature way to consume alcohol. The fact that it has to be 'sneaky' is the worrying part.

If it was allowed, like in other countries, and you did not have a front line job etc... I don't see the problem.

But if you are supposed to go without alcohol while at work, and cannot manage to do so, then you obviously have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol.

I could not last the work day without a cigarette or two.
But there again, I am addicted.

When I worked in Belfast or even England this was so common at lunchtime
Never, ever did it Dublin or Galway yet this nation is held up as the heaviest drinkers?

It is all hype, we make out we are hard drinkers rebellious types, a kind of playing to the stereotype. But the truth of the matter is we are terribly afraid about what people think of us or say. I have traveled a lot and can say very honestly we are the most conformist society in Europe. We take everything that we are given by our "betters", and complain to Joe Duffy and his ilk.

This mentality goes back down to the pub too. People are afraid of what people would say about them. Just travel over to London and drop by their pubs on the high street. All business men enjoying a drink with their meal. I myself don't drink during the working week, unless there is a special occasion, but that is just my choice and I believe there is no problem with you having a drink unless you make it a problem.

As for the guy who doesn't drink cos he handles guns for the army..... LOL
And if I do recall correctly the cheapest pint I ever bought in Ireland was on an army barracks. That seems fair though :D

    Point being?
So what if it's not every day?
I get maybe once, even twice in your lifetime, but as a regular weekly/monthly thing, it's a bit sad to be honest.

Oh shut up would you. People can be so judgmental on this....

Dont think its that we cannot go without it at lunch time, its just we would like to have one every now and again. Like everything in life, when done responsibly, I dont see any problem with it.

Years ago I got fired for being pissed on the job. I arrived late, stank of drink, unsteady on my feet and when I got the sack I couldn't give 2 sh*ts about it. As time went by I found it harder and harder to get another job, mainly because of the black mark on my CV (I'm a terrible liar) and spent 9 months on the dole at the height of Celtic Tiger Ireland.
