I find this thread shallow and pedantic

I thought I was but then I started to hang out with a woman and all her mates had PhD's and other such letters after their names. The conversation amongst this group was fascinating and highly involved their medical fields, most were working in cutting edge research, even there jokes were in house but funny, I'm sure :P

It made me realize there is more to life then chatting about the weather.

    No.

    It's a little conceited, isn't it?

Not unless you go around boasting about it and putting other people down.

boasting and putting other people down.

The question dealt with thinking that you were smarter than the average person, not being a bigger cunt

I took a test from Mensa and they said my IQ is 125. They said I am in the top 10 percentile.

In Cork, this means you can tie your own shoelaces.

I took an IQ test and got 73.

    Is that good? :)

I'm some ways I feel I'm smarter than the average person, in other ways I'm not.

I'm a very book / computer smart - Messing around with computers is like childs play for me, though it does lead to me being sometimes treated as family tech support.

However, I can't really do DIY to save my life. If I try to hammer in a nail, for example, I'm more likely to hit my thumb than the bloody nail more often than not! :pac:

My social skills also weren't exactly the best when I was younger either but have come a long way since then.

Sure, I wouldn't mind being labelled smart but I have no problem with being labelled average either, though the reality is you can't really put everyone in the same categories as we all have our own strengths and weaknesses.

So what's the problem with saying you're smarter than the average person if you're not an asshole about it? Is someone with a ridiculously high IQ, a string of achievements and a First from Oxbridge in Arabic and Russian supposed to claim they're 'pretty average, really'?

Yes, I'm smarter then the average bear

Why do people get angry at others if they genuinely are smarter? Its a question, people are answering it.

Very interested to know if being in top 10 is reflected in the type of work you do? What I really want to know is are you earning big buckaroos or are you like those really smart people who need help tying their shoe laces?? This is a genuine question ;)

Yeah, but can they get a job?

I'm terribly clever academically, but I have all the common sense of a tulip :o

Yeah, but can they get a job?

That's not really relevant. Plenty of morons have jobs (but this particular person I'm talking about has an amazing job in Paris with a ridiculously high salary, so yes).

Arabic and Russian customer support. It even offers limitless scope for taking out your egregious sense of career dissatisfaction on innocent customers.

No. And the older I get and the more people I meet, the more I realise how limited my intelligence is. I'd say I'm more wise than clever. I've always given myself and others good advice and I suppose that's a kind of intelligence but I'm not book smart and am not a natural student. I can hold a conversation with most people though, so I suppose I'm not thick as two bricks either.

    Russian ambassador to Saudi Arabia?

It's as well my Arabic and Russian speaking mate isn't Irish, because she sure as hell wouldn't have had the confidence to go and do what she's doing. The begrudgers would have knocked her down long ago and she probably would be working in a call centre for 8 euro an hour. Having an over-inflated ego is a bad thing. Recognising your own worth and potential is not.

I don't really think or worry about how smart i am compared to other people. How smart they are doesn't affect me in the slightest...unless i was up against them on The Krypton Factor i don't see the point in thinking about it.

In the grand scheme of things I'm probably quite clever...but seriously...who gives a piss.

Smart and intelligent are two different things though. There are loads of non academic smart people and a lot of intelligent fools with no smarts at all.

I going to tell the honest truth.
I'm stupid in some areas but probably equally know a lot more stuff in others, that other people don't.

The way i look at life is...if someone is smarter than me, i can beat them in a fight. If someone can beat me in a fight i can beat them at chess. If someone can beat me in a fight, and at chess, i challenge them to a chess match and half way through i start the fight by smacking them in the head with something heavy.

When it comes to finding ways to win I'm a ****ing genius.:D

To be honest when I was younger and growing up I would have always been one of the brightest in my class/year. Now that I'm in college I seriously struggle to motivate myself to learn anything but I'm still well able to pass with doing the bare minimum, kills me though thinking how much smarter I was when I was growing up. I'd say I'm average now tbh.

I'm not as smart as people tell me I am.
But I'm glad they do think that because they like to pay me stupid money to act it.

Though I did do 3 weeks without alcohol a while back and I felt like a genius. I would be the worst member of a pub-quiz team regardless.
