I've been in a lot of different discussions with different people lately and I've come to the conclusion that almost everybody thinks they're smarter than the average person..

Plenty of those just saying they're "under achievers" and "not bothered".

This isn't to say you aren't intelligent or over-estimating your intelligence.

I just merely want to know from the users of the forum!

Do you believe if you took an IQ test, you'd score higher than average? (Or perhaps if you have taken one)

PS: Online tests from random internet sites that give you the IQ of a physics genius don't count!

    Please answer honestly.

What do you mean by smart? I believe most people are smart in their own way and others are just thick.

I did that IQ test with Anne Robinson and Paul Schofield
You know the test is given in a TV mag and then they run the test over a few hours on TV on a Friday evening.

First time I ever did an IQ test

    95, they said average was 90 - 110
    Sounds ok to me :)

Post up a pic of a well known average human there, and I 'll tell ya.

This is going to sound totally cliched!
But, in some ways, I am definitely smarter than the average person.
And in other ways, I would be well below par.
There is no way to measure overall intelligence, so no one can ever really know one way or another.
To go about believing that you are smarter than everyone else is actually healthy for your self esteem, but it's not going to win you any friends!
And it's not ever going to be true either!

In IQ tests, yes quite a bit.

I'd say I am but I balance it out by being socially retarded.

  • I had my IQ tested when I was a kid and it was very high, so yeah. I was reading GCSE level novels at 6 or 7. I was supposed to go to a programme for weird smart kids, but my mum thought it would turn me into a total weirdo (I was already quite odd). I pick things up very quickly and find it easy to retain information, which is just as well because I don't really enjoy reading or studying. Common sense is somewhat lacking. I think it's well within the 'normal' range, but I do have blonde moments fairly regularly.

It's funny 'cos over 80% think they're above average. I'd say I'm average, but broadminded and will be properly educated (as in college/masters/phd) in a few years time.

Ok let's get the bidding going. My IQ is two fiddy.

Define smarter, street smarts or actual smarts?
    Actual smarts in what field/topic?

It's all relative depending on what you're talking about.

I am regularly disappointed by how average I am...and sometimes I can be just plain stupid... I'm university educated though so I know how to pass myself off as being resonably intelligent :)

I did read somewhere that apparently women tend to under estimate their ability and men over estimate it... What a surprise.

    Meh. Average. I'm mathematically retarded.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,573 ✭✭✭pragmatic1

I'm average. Problem solving skills could do with a lot of refinement. Can be really slow on some things but usually figure them out in the end.

    This.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

I thought I was but then I started to hang out with a woman and all her mates had PhD's and other such letters after their names. The conversation amongst this group was fascinating and highly involved their medical fields, most were working in cutting edge research, even there jokes were in house but funny, I'm sure :P

It made me realize there is more to life then chatting about the weather.

Not unless you go around boasting about it and putting other people down.

boasting and putting other people down.

The question dealt with thinking that you were smarter than the average person, not being a bigger cunt

I took a test from Mensa and they said my IQ is 125. They said I am in the top 10 percentile.

In Cork, this means you can tie your own shoelaces.

I took an IQ test and got 73.

    Is that good? :)

I'm some ways I feel I'm smarter than the average person, in other ways I'm not.

I'm a very book / computer smart - Messing around with computers is like childs play for me, though it does lead to me being sometimes treated as family tech support.

However, I can't really do DIY to save my life. If I try to hammer in a nail, for example, I'm more likely to hit my thumb than the bloody nail more often than not! :pac:

My social skills also weren't exactly the best when I was younger either but have come a long way since then.

Sure, I wouldn't mind being labelled smart but I have no problem with being labelled average either, though the reality is you can't really put everyone in the same categories as we all have our own strengths and weaknesses.

So what's the problem with saying you're smarter than the average person if you're not an asshole about it? Is someone with a ridiculously high IQ, a string of achievements and a First from Oxbridge in Arabic and Russian supposed to claim they're 'pretty average, really'?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,919 ✭✭✭✭Gummy Panda

Yes, I'm smarter then the average bear

Why do people get angry at others if they genuinely are smarter? Its a question, people are answering it.

Very interested to know if being in top 10 is reflected in the type of work you do? What I really want to know is are you earning big buckaroos or are you like those really smart people who need help tying their shoe laces?? This is a genuine question ;)

Yeah, but can they get a job?

I'm terribly clever academically, but I have all the common sense of a tulip :o

  • Yeah, but can they get a job?

That's not really relevant. Plenty of morons have jobs (but this particular person I'm talking about has an amazing job in Paris with a ridiculously high salary, so yes).

Yeah, but can they get a job?

Arabic and Russian customer support. It even offers limitless scope for taking out your egregious sense of career dissatisfaction on innocent customers.
