Parishes also employ corporate fundraising companies for large scale drives like roof resortations and church repairs.

We had to raise €100k for our church to fix the roof etc (why doesn't someone invent a church roof that doesn't require refurbishing every ten years?) And we did it purely by word of mouth and through the parish magazine. It took two years in the end.

nobody think of praying for a miracle restoration?

The Catholic Church runs the education system in Ireland and i'm sure they make a mint out of that they also invest in blue chip shares on top of that they get donations of a few thousand a week from each parish!

But in Scotland they make Buckie cleaver chaps them scots!

I seen a priest driving a brand new 2011 Lexus CT a couple of weeks ago, so they can't be doing too bad.

How? Are you making the mistake of thinking that all nominally catholic organisations, religious orders, dioceses and parishes are all under one corporate umbrella? A profitably run Jesuit school in south county Dublin has little or nothing to do with a leaky parish chuch in west Cork.

    Yeah, especially the bank shares

Each parish uses most of this to run said parish.

Just because people can't understand why folks would give money to the RCC church to support it doesn't mean there's a grand conspiracy.

    A waitress I know drives a BMW (2009 btw).

Priests are essentially self employed (although some are emploted directly in other jobs (teachers, prison chaplins). Like everyone else, they might be lucky with an inheritence, etc.

Secular priests (i.e. diocesan priests) don't take vows of poverty. They're not monks.

I was only answering the ops question "How is the Catholic church funded in Ireland?" not saying anything about a conspiracy!

What do you think they do with those collections at mass?

    Coke and hookers?

    Thanks for all the feedback.

I guess my next question would be, if people stopped paying into collections on sundays, monthly dues, weddings, christenings etc. how long would it take before they would have to shut up shop?

Holy Water. They take water from the taps and get some guy to wave his hand over it and then sell it for €50 a gallon. All profit.

I'd guess, a long time. The Vatican City used to be one of the wealthiest countries in the world. Or maybe just wealthiest cities, I'd have to look into it more as I can't quite remember offhand. They own a lot of land though, there's a lot of wealth in the Vatican. The collections, I'd guess, are for day-to-day running and salaries, but they have a massive nest-egg as well, with all their properties. I also strongly doubt you'd be able to stop/discourage churchgoers giving money to the church collection!

I guess individual parishes - not too long (year or two). Some religious orders a lot lot longer as they would have other sources of income (and no mortgages).

Why do you ask? Why would people who are voluntarily part of the church (or any other organisation) stop supporting it financially to allow it to carry on what they want and expect it to do?

The vatican doesn't support diocese or parishes or religious orders financially. The Vatican gets much of its day to day money from donations, coins and stamps. I'd have to check but I think the books of the vatican have ben pretty ropey anyway for the last few years.

Also - why would you want to stop/discourage people from using their money as they want?

I would NEVER tell people what to do with their money or how to live their lives (there's a joke in here somewhere)

There is a huge amount of anger towards the church in Ireland YET I believe the very people that cry out, pay the church a considerable amount of money be it through collections, christening, etc. etc.

If people are so unhappy with the church why do they continue to fund it?

    Couldn't agree with you more.

If you're not happy don't contribute. The only thing that doesn't work for is taxes.
