Fat Kids

When I was a kid (primary school in late 80's, secondary for most of 90's), I remember there was always usually just 1 fat kid in the class, and every group of friends over the years seemed to just have 1 fat mate, etc. Even in secondary - 1 fat kid in the class (3 or 4 in the entire year). In my group of friends - just 1 fat kid.

Now when I look around at groups of kids, you see 10 year old boys with tits - big floppy tits - the percentage of fat kids now has to be 40-50% - it's insane! You see 7/8 year old girls with leggings & massive camel toes of flab! << Yeah, I'm bad for pointing it out, but we've all seen it. A chunky little sweathog with an ice-cream cone in her hand waddling along.

We all know it's a problem - kids are getting fatter. It's not the kids fault - has to be the parents just setting a bad example & not being arsed motivating them. Maybe someone here has fat kids and can enlighten us?

If my kids are every fat little piggies, please shoot me in the head for failing as a parent. It's hard enough being motivated to stay in shape in my 30's now - so what sort of a start in life is being a fat 8,9,10 year old?? The future is likely diabetes or a heart attack. Habits learned at that age are hard to break. :(

    It saddens me, that's all.

    Discussion welcome.

    Might be pocket money?

Which I was a child fadó fadó I had no money to buy sweets and soft drinks.
Packed lunch every day and only on Friday would you get two punts for a treat.

Even if I wanted to stuff my face I had no money to do it until I got a job

How much money do school kids get these days?

I saw a fat lad a few days ago that was extra large. He had what looked like a beer belly. His belly was drooping downwards. The poor lad mustn't have been more than 10.

    Fat lad exam failure.

It's all part of the Chinese plan to make Sumo wrestling an Olympic event!

I think its down to the diet of pre-packed and proccessed foods personally, parents usually have jobs and dont have time to cook healthy nutritious meals and so go with the easy stuff that is proven to be bad for you.
Its also cheaper to buy this crap too which plays a big part in it.

I can't wait to see their faces when they realise that sumo is primarily a Japanese sport!!

No one lets their kids go and play in the street anymore, and if they do their not playing football.
If your a parents, take your kids for walks, to the parks, and don't overfeed them.

    Parental failure. Simple as.

(was tempted to start that with the word "FACT", but that generally doesn't go down too well in AH!!)

Kids aren't allowed to run in the playground any more.

Kids are driven to school and not allowed walk to school because of fear of being kidnapped etc. Less likely to be let play outside for long periods of time as a parent usually has to supervise in case of being kidnapped etc.

Roads are more busy so it's less safe to go cycling.

Then there's computer games, DS, internet.

Its also cheaper to buy this crap too which plays a big part in it.

I think this plays a major part in why Children these days are larger these days. Both parents are usually working and it's easier to put on a pizza or chips than making a proper home cooked meal.

Apparently "gaining" is becoming a popular fetish. Some people like men with nice round beer guts. There are even a few websites dedicated to "weight gain" as opposed to "weight loss". IMO, it's not good to be too skinny or too fat. The media like to popularise the notion of being very slim and muscular, which puts pressure on young people too.

Convenience food, processed food has more sugar in it, the amount of sugar in food today compared to 20/30 years ago is unbelievable. Few people cook from scratch and most will feed kids a lot of frozen food or pre made food and kids are drinking fizzy drinks every day. Cheap high sugar content food.

All that sugar and fat adds up, this with parent's who seem to think saying no to a child and making them upset is child abuse means children are eating way more calories then they need.

    Cheaper than fruit and veg?

I'd continue and say junk food, not as in meals but snacks. Watch any group of kids and you'll find the fat one munching on a bag of crisps nearly every time.

But it's not really, especially if you do a bit of prep on the weekends.

Yeah Ive been saying the same thing for ages.

I lived in a large new housing estate and every single night the ice cream van would come up and 15-20 of the same kids would leg it up to him. I would say 50% of them were overweight and probably the same % of parents as well. Females being predominantly more overweight than the males.

Why the parents would give their overweight kids money to buy sweets every night was beyond me.

I'm saying this is probably one of the main reasons kids are bigger, not having a home cooked meal.

The NES was out when I was about 10 or so. Wasn't allowed get one. Eventually got a SNES a few years later, but wasn't allowed play it too much. Loved cycling - loved playing football, loved building tree houses & climbing trees.

So we had game consoles growing up - we just played them in moderation (well, most of us).

I guess it crosses over to treats too - we only had a packet of "Handy" bars in the drawer, and a 6-pack of Space Cadet crisps. I had a Handy bar for lunch in school, and a pack of crisps when I came home. Other than that, it was moderation. We had no fizzy drinks. My Mam said they were "full of sh*te".

Defo parents to blame - all the same stuff was around when I was growing up that's around today - sure, technology has improved - but I still had games & junk food - but my parents moderated it - which is their responsibility as parents!! It's not being moderated today, so kids are eating sweets, playing games for hours, and eating processed meals.

You'd struggle to get down the footpath outside schools some mornings and evenings with the amount of cars and SUV's mounting the footpath.

Can't expect little Johnny or Mary to walk.

Of course, children and many adults can't see around SUV's so instead of making things safter, it's actually making it more dangerous

And sure several times a year you'll hear stories of a friend of a friend knows of a man approaching children after school. All over boards too
The van is white, always white ;)
Pure scaremongering and hysteria but now fewer children walk to school

People have a very distorted view of what they should and shouldn't actually be eating. The food pyramid is completely wrong.

People eat too much bread, their kids have bread in the morning, for lunch and then as snacks but of course the parents don't consider that to be a bad snack so along with the bready snacks they also have chocolate and crisps and cakes etc.

I allow my child to have a treat every day, some people would say that I shouldn't give him one every day but I don't add sugar to any of his other food and he doesn't snack on worthless food like chocolate spread sandwiches or biscuits so I think it's fine.

I managed to get a NES when I was younger. But the games were something like 50 quid, and my 80p pocket money would've meant waiting a year to get a new game (after I'd finished Mario Bros and the other free game was Duck Hunt).

My nephew gets something mad like 10 euro pocket money a week. Although we're both skinny as f*ck.

Now when I look around at groups of kids,

You should stop looking at groups of kids, seriously.

Also sexually objectifying 10 year old children and saying they have "tits" is perverse.
