Fat Kids

When I was a kid (primary school in late 80's, secondary for most of 90's), I remember there was always usually just 1 fat kid in the class, and every group of friends over the years seemed to just have 1 fat mate, etc. Even in secondary - 1 fat kid in the class (3 or 4 in the entire year). In my group of friends - just 1 fat kid.

Now when I look around at groups of kids, you see 10 year old boys with tits - big floppy tits - the percentage of fat kids now has to be 40-50% - it's insane! You see 7/8 year old girls with leggings & massive camel toes of flab! << Yeah, I'm bad for pointing it out, but we've all seen it. A chunky little sweathog with an ice-cream cone in her hand waddling along.

We all know it's a problem - kids are getting fatter. It's not the kids fault - has to be the parents just setting a bad example & not being arsed motivating them. Maybe someone here has fat kids and can enlighten us?

If my kids are every fat little piggies, please shoot me in the head for failing as a parent. It's hard enough being motivated to stay in shape in my 30's now - so what sort of a start in life is being a fat 8,9,10 year old?? The future is likely diabetes or a heart attack. Habits learned at that age are hard to break. :(

    It saddens me, that's all.

    Discussion welcome.

    Might be pocket money?

Which I was a child fadó fadó I had no money to buy sweets and soft drinks.
Packed lunch every day and only on Friday would you get two punts for a treat.

Even if I wanted to stuff my face I had no money to do it until I got a job

How much money do school kids get these days?

I saw a fat lad a few days ago that was extra large. He had what looked like a beer belly. His belly was drooping downwards. The poor lad mustn't have been more than 10.

    Fat lad exam failure.

I think its down to the diet of pre-packed and proccessed foods personally, parents usually have jobs and dont have time to cook healthy nutritious meals and so go with the easy stuff that is proven to be bad for you.
Its also cheaper to buy this crap too which plays a big part in it.

I can't wait to see their faces when they realise that sumo is primarily a Japanese sport!!

No one lets their kids go and play in the street anymore, and if they do their not playing football.
If your a parents, take your kids for walks, to the parks, and don't overfeed them.

(was tempted to start that with the word "FACT", but that generally doesn't go down too well in AH!!)

Kids aren't allowed to run in the playground any more.

Kids are driven to school and not allowed walk to school because of fear of being kidnapped etc. Less likely to be let play outside for long periods of time as a parent usually has to supervise in case of being kidnapped etc.

Roads are more busy so it's less safe to go cycling.

Then there's computer games, DS, internet.

Its also cheaper to buy this crap too which plays a big part in it.

I think this plays a major part in why Children these days are larger these days. Both parents are usually working and it's easier to put on a pizza or chips than making a proper home cooked meal.

Apparently "gaining" is becoming a popular fetish. Some people like men with nice round beer guts. There are even a few websites dedicated to "weight gain" as opposed to "weight loss". IMO, it's not good to be too skinny or too fat. The media like to popularise the notion of being very slim and muscular, which puts pressure on young people too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,427 ✭✭✭Morag

Convenience food, processed food has more sugar in it, the amount of sugar in food today compared to 20/30 years ago is unbelievable. Few people cook from scratch and most will feed kids a lot of frozen food or pre made food and kids are drinking fizzy drinks every day. Cheap high sugar content food.

All that sugar and fat adds up, this with parent's who seem to think saying no to a child and making them upset is child abuse means children are eating way more calories then they need.

    Cheaper than fruit and veg?

I'd continue and say junk food, not as in meals but snacks. Watch any group of kids and you'll find the fat one munching on a bag of crisps nearly every time.

Yeah Ive been saying the same thing for ages.

I lived in a large new housing estate and every single night the ice cream van would come up and 15-20 of the same kids would leg it up to him. I would say 50% of them were overweight and probably the same % of parents as well. Females being predominantly more overweight than the males.

Why the parents would give their overweight kids money to buy sweets every night was beyond me.

The NES was out when I was about 10 or so. Wasn't allowed get one. Eventually got a SNES a few years later, but wasn't allowed play it too much. Loved cycling - loved playing football, loved building tree houses & climbing trees.

So we had game consoles growing up - we just played them in moderation (well, most of us).

I guess it crosses over to treats too - we only had a packet of "Handy" bars in the drawer, and a 6-pack of Space Cadet crisps. I had a Handy bar for lunch in school, and a pack of crisps when I came home. Other than that, it was moderation. We had no fizzy drinks. My Mam said they were "full of sh*te".

Defo parents to blame - all the same stuff was around when I was growing up that's around today - sure, technology has improved - but I still had games & junk food - but my parents moderated it - which is their responsibility as parents!! It's not being moderated today, so kids are eating sweets, playing games for hours, and eating processed meals.

You'd struggle to get down the footpath outside schools some mornings and evenings with the amount of cars and SUV's mounting the footpath.

Can't expect little Johnny or Mary to walk.

Of course, children and many adults can't see around SUV's so instead of making things safter, it's actually making it more dangerous

And sure several times a year you'll hear stories of a friend of a friend knows of a man approaching children after school. All over boards too
The van is white, always white ;)
Pure scaremongering and hysteria but now fewer children walk to school

People have a very distorted view of what they should and shouldn't actually be eating. The food pyramid is completely wrong.

People eat too much bread, their kids have bread in the morning, for lunch and then as snacks but of course the parents don't consider that to be a bad snack so along with the bready snacks they also have chocolate and crisps and cakes etc.

I allow my child to have a treat every day, some people would say that I shouldn't give him one every day but I don't add sugar to any of his other food and he doesn't snack on worthless food like chocolate spread sandwiches or biscuits so I think it's fine.

I managed to get a NES when I was younger. But the games were something like 50 quid, and my 80p pocket money would've meant waiting a year to get a new game (after I'd finished Mario Bros and the other free game was Duck Hunt).

My nephew gets something mad like 10 euro pocket money a week. Although we're both skinny as f*ck.

Also sexually objectifying 10 year old children and saying they have "tits" is perverse.

At that its usually white bread.. full of so many preservatives etc that it would survive a nuclear winter.

Plus they use soy in a lot of foods these days. Its relatively new to the western diet as well. Could be a reason for little boys having boobs (did I just type that.... ) or a rotund chest area.

In my opinion the main reason for much more obesity among children these days - and it is a really shocking epidemic - is that parents are too paranoid to allow their children out to play, to run in the playground, to walk or cycle to school like was the norm back in the 1980s when I was a child.

McDonalds was around when I was a kid and so were crisps, chocolates, sweets and other junk food. But the big difference back then is that we were allowed to play outside. In fact, my mother was pleased to see us heading out to play and out of her hair.:pac::D Remember the words "It's a great day, so go play outside!"

It's inactivity IMO that's the biggest factor in childhood obesity. Over in Holland where my sister lives, you see very, very few fat kids because children are still allowed to play outside with their friends and walk to school, as they should do. Also, the much better urban planning in Holland means that neighbourhoods are designed with children's play areas and safety in mind.

    Yeah, nice selective quoting there.

Let me try some of your logic on you: Have you ever seen a baby? Yes? Well then maybe you stop stop staring tiny little innocent babies out of it with your gazing adult eyes. I bet you even have a penis concealed behind a piece of cloth while you stare, don't you? See - we can both apply stupid illogic motives to a simple every day scenario. Yeah - I saw a group of kids = I'm a paedo.

I was fat when I was a kid and it was a very sad and hard childhood. Guess how it started... I didnt like to eat too much before I went to creche (or pre-school?) but I did like to draw and some "smart" lady there was telling me if I eat more I will get more pencils...so I ate more and more and I started liking it too much and I strugle until now to control my weight...
Do everything to dont let your kids become fat. It stays with you for life -this broken heart and self-esteem (after beeing costantly rejected and poited out)

Exactly, oh it's always the white bread! No goodness in it whatsoever.

You make a good point about the soy, there's also all the hormones injected into chicken etc.

We eat a lot of chicken in this house and unfortunately I can't afford organic stuff so have to buy it from the butchers where obviously there is a lot of undesirable ingredients in it.

That's why I like to be strict about the added sugar and stuff like bread because I don't want my kids bodies bombarded with crap from every food they eat.

If I called your fat kid a "little fattie", and you tried you rip my arm off, I just wouldn't let you, and I'd beat you up instead. It saddens me when I hear people saying that healthy eating is a lot more expensive that the processed foods you can get. That's simply not true. You can go to your local fruit and veg shop and get a mountain of food for less than 20 euro. Then buy some meat, rice/noodles/pasta etc and add some home ingredients and hey presto you have a good few days meals for the family!

The reason why people buy processed food and easy-to-cook meals it that they are pushed for time, (possibly a little lazy), and definitely clueless as to how simple and quick it is to make many healthy meals. It's time we stopped dialing in fast food and picked up a cook book for f*ck sake. We'll have caught up and by-passed the Americans before we know it! :(

its down to parenting and way we live, its fine to say parents should cook and make dinner, but its often when parents both are at work*not back in the days when was more common for one parent to stay at home and live off the otherhalfs wage*,and both tired after days work it so seems easier to get an takeaway.

Fat Kids like fat grownups have feelings too so we have to be mindful or ignorant if they obese, along with lack of disciple which most parents seem to give their little darlings the latest gadget to keep them quiet, another reason parents mostly *to annoyance of some of us* drive one kid to school instead of letting them walk*well its not safe with mindset in parents that there are pedos around who abduct children*.

If my kid was fat, and I was watching as he/she waddled around out of breath when trying to run 10m, I'd be so f*cking embarrassed.
Sometimes I see them down the park with their Dad for an (clearly) irregular kick-around, and the kid waddles up to hoof the ball & then has to catch his breath - with big puffy red cheeks, etc. How can you be proud of that sort of lax parenting?! What way is that to set them up for life?

Do you reckon the parents even realise they have tubby kids? Or are they in denial & think it's "puppy fat" or something. You just know there's a parent reading this topic who has a fat kid. Would love to know their excuses for it - likely something pathetic about "how hard it is"...
