    Hi Aoife
I’m confused about how the second year of Arts works, I’ve passed all my exams but I don’t know what subjects I will be doing next year, when do we decide, can we do any subjects out of the four from first year or are there number limits?
I did Psychology, Sociology, Economics and Public Admin last year and I think I want to keep on Psychology and Sociology for my degree. Will I get information on this before going back in September? Will I be able to do the subjects I want to do?
    Thanks

Hey sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Right what is your cumulative QCA? if this is a good bit below 2.00 then you will have to repeat the Ds to bring the QCA up. Would you feel confident to get the Ds rechecked, its €25 per exam and if you go up you'll get the money refunded, (its an option!)

Get back to me on your results from the first semester too and we can work out a potential QCA and know how many you have to repeat from there.

    Aoife

Hi Aoife, thanks for getting back to me.

    6pz5e8.jpg

the 2 f's are from a computer programming module, we'rent actually graded in semester 1, we did an exam alright, but everybody got M grades. and my qca then was 2.4, but as of the may programming exam, what you got in may, is what you got for christmas, so that put a big dent in my qca for sem1 and dropped it below 2, even tho I was up :(

    3163gih.jpg

Spoke to my programming lecturer's, he says the exam will be worth 100%, and what you get for it, you'll get for both exams, ie two for the price of one, there will not be a double exam, so I'm hoping if I just repeat the programming, a c3 is enough to see me into second year ?

    Hi ConfudedinUL,

If you repeat the two for price of one exam and get a D1 your qca will be 2.08 and if you get a C3 it will be 2.16.

If fact even if you get a D2 your qca will be exactly 2.00.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Aoife,

I am due to go into my final year of Law and Euro in September. I am currently on Erasmus and have applied for a year of absence in order to stay another year on Erasmus. If my application is successful, I won't be registered in UL, but will still have all the same privileges as an Erasmus student in my university here as I'll be a 'programme student'. I have to wait until around the 5th of July to find out if my application has been successful or not.

Judging by my request, what are the chances of UL granting my leave of absence and letting me stay on? They know I'll be here as a programme student, but Law and Euro is no more after next year :( I am sorry to ask, but I need to have some indication for picking modules over here!

    Hi Aoife,
I am a 4th year MMPT student. You probably know me but I would rather stay mysterious.

I have got a QCA of 2.57... which qualifies me for a "3rd class honours".. I know there is a discretionary band of .1 in these cases. I was told there was nothing i could do to raise it up to a 2.6 for a second class honours however. i emailed The head of our course and she she said something about external examiners rejecting it. and based on 4th year results and FYP score.

My fyp score was a B3 and my 4th year reasults consist of no Ds or Fs... which means I cannot even repeat if i wanted to...

Is there ANYway I appeal this decision? Honestly I'm quite furious about the whole thing. In todays economy itºs hard enough to get a job without worrying about a .03..

I'm probably meeting up with the head of the CSIS department next week to discuss this.. Any advice on what i should say? Thanks Aoife!

    Hi Aoife,

My residual qca says it will be 2.08 if I repeat my 4 F subjects and get C3's in them all, does that mean if I do get C3's in each exam that I can move forward?

Also 2 of my repeat exams are Spanish. They are both 100% exams and I was wondering is it possible that they could fall at the same time or would they schedule them to be at different times? The module codes are SP4131 and SP4132

    Thanks :)

hi ceewa, im also going into second year of arts in september. During the spring semester we had to choose the subjects/route we were going to take. I think you should contact the SAA and tell them that you did not make your choice during the semester.
    Hope this helps :)

Thanks, I'm still trying to get hold of someone to ask about it in SAA. I did miss a lot of college in the second semester so must have missed having to choose. I've figured out that i can't do psychology and socialogy anyway from the info on the course. can we just do what ever subjects we like as long as its one from each group or are there number limits to stuff like pschchology?

As far as i know you can do whatever subjects you want as long as they are not in the same group. Ya there are number limits for psychology, but they said that there has never been a problem with it.

    Hi Aoife,

I received a letter containing forms for the payment of fees for the year 2011/2012. I am in the middle of clearing up my Igrades and had planned on taking a year out and just doing a module by link in next year. I had not planned on repeating the year. I wonder was this sent to me in error or what would you recommend I do next?

    Hi Aoife,

What happens if you fail one module? is there anyway you can continue into the next year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68 ✭✭joey12

maybe you should send an email out to everyone informing what will happen this year with fees. Meaning if a family has say 3 people going to college only one person pays the €2000 etc

If there's 2 people in the family, all going to college, then each student must pay the €2000. However, the €1000 must then be clamied back in tax (since technically, only the first child pays €2000, the rest pay €1500). In other words, you must pay it up front, then claim it back. If you don't claim it, the Govt keep it.

That's all the information you need with claiming it back. Lotta gobbledegook in there, but it's understandable enough.
Don't know anything about that 2 installment jazz (not saying it's untrue, just never heard it)!

    cheers for that link

nah i was reading about the two installments here http://www.independent.ie/national-news/college-fees-can-be-paid-in-instalments-2800503.html

I hear nuig got clear info on this

Hi Aoife, what is the shortest co-op time possible in order to pass the co-op part of the course. I'm seriously struggling financially . . . I have three months done and am scheduled to do another three.

There are people on my course who haven't even started theirs yet and will be finished before Christmas. Seems totally unfair to me. Surely there should be set amount of time such as three months? I finished my exams in May and went straight to work the following week. I've had no break and it just kills me that I'm slipping into debt while others on my course have had a proper holiday before starting this unpaid lark

Actually, having looked at the website I can see that it is in fact 6 months for Humanities students.

Does this mean my class-mates will fail co-op for not doing the full six months?

And if not, then why should I have to complete six months?

    Thanks Aoife!
