How much is each year worth (like is it 33%/33%/33% or 25%/25%/50%??)for law and accounting? I have heard a few answers and nobody seems to know for definate. i asked course director for an official answer in september and still hasnt got back to me so... do you know?

    thank you :)

    According to SAA, this is the weighting attached to each semester for Law and Accounting;

    Semester 3 = 1
    Semester 4 = 1
    Semester 5 = 2
    Semester 6 = Co-op
    Semester 7 = 2
    Semester 8 = 2

The weighting affects the importance of the semester in terms of your final degree.

Erasmus is first semester, 3rd year (Semester 5).

    I've attached the link to your course structure;

The pass rate, as well as the percentage to grade scale varies across UL. Usually it's 40% but some modules i.e. Communications has 48%, others have as high as 65%, others have lower. The best way to find out what the pass rate in your modules is, is to contact your lecturers.

I'm sure Aoife will give you the official answer but the provisional exam timetable is published in early November. If you have a genuine problem (such as two exams in the one day) with the timetable you should tell your class rep. Its his/her job to organise a class meeting and take a vote on whether or not ye want a change.

If the class agrees then the rep needs to talk to the lecturer of the module who then must email SAA to request a change. There is a cut off date for this
as organising the timetables for 14,000 or so students is a tricky job

    What Baz said.

You will have to sit the two exams on Saturday, as the time for objecting to the exam timetable was during the semester. The provisional timetable comes out in Week 9 each semester. The link is sent out and each student is supposed to make any objections that they have then to their Class Reps. CRs can request the change from the lecturer who in turn requests it from SAA. If a class has no CR then, individual students can request the change through the lecturer. SAA will consider applications to change exam times but may not grant the application.

Erasmus is not confined to courses with languages. That's why Erasmus is offered in English speaking universities across Europe for example Scotland, the UK, Malta and some Swedish and offered to courses like English and New Media, HPSS, etc.

To find out if you can go on Erasmus as part of your course, the best option would be to contact your Course Director.

Not entirely sure if you'll be able to help with this one but here it goes anyway: Say you submitted a hard copy of an essay but never submitted it by email. Will this essay still be graded and counted toward your grade or are you screwed?

I seem to say that a lot, but that depends. In your module outline, was the essay submission hard copy and email or just email? Second of all, when was the essay due and did the lecturer set aside time for feedback? Thirdly, did you speak to the lecturer at any point about your essay?

I would be surprised if a lecturer punished you for only submitting a hard copy if both were required. However, some lecturers are a lot more pedantic and rigid than others. The best advice I could give you is to contact the lecturer as soon as you can and just ask.

The actually submitting for it was a little odd, we had to submit a hard copy by week 10 and have it emailed in by week 12. I handed it in on time but because the date to submit it by email was different I didn't do it straight away and it completely slipped my mind. Feedback was given in week 12s tutorial (I think) but I couldn't attend that so I didn't get that back, however I know the essays were not going to be returned and I haven't spoke to the lecturer yet about it.

I would advise that you speak to the lecturer immediately. Making a mistake like forgetting to submit the email copy is an easy thing to do. The longer you leave speaking to him/her, the longer you spend not knowing.

Whats the threshold Q.C.A. for a 2.2 and a 2.1 degree in Business Studies?

    Hi Ronan,

    I've copied and pasted the information that I received from the Assitant Dean of the KBS;

    1st - 3.35 QCA
    2.1 - 2.95 QCA
    2.2 - 2.5 QCA

    Hope this helps,

Got a module grade re-check! When do I find out the results of that!?

Got a module grade re-check! When do I find out the results of that!?

The date for lecturers to return the regraded scripts was last Friday but SAA are still chasing lecturers to submit them now. In addition to that the UL system collapsed for 3 days leaving SAA with no ability to get the regrades finalised. Long story short, soon but with no definite date of completion unfortunately.

If yours is one where there's a change in grade, SAA will send a letter to your house informing you of the change. Hope this helps and sorry I can't be more definite.

    Hi,
I'm currently doing the alternative program for co-op. I changed my modules from my initial selection with the co op office, but http://www.si.ul.ie tells me im registered for the modules I initially selected. I e-mailed the co-op office about this 11 days ago and they said they were letting SAA know of the changes in modules that day and that SAA would update the database soon. There is still no change in my modules on SI and i'm worried about not being on class e-mail lists, should I get onto the coop office again or contact SAA? if so how do i get in contact with SAA?

    Thanks

There are a couple of ways that you can get SAA. You can phone one of the administrators. Their contact details are on this webpage: http://www2.ul.ie/web/WWW/Services/Student_Affairs/Student_Administration/Student_Academic_Administration/Staff_and_Useful_Links

You can call into me in the SU and I can phone one of the more helpful administrators for you and find out what's happened/attempt to fix it.

You can go to SAA and speak to the one administrators. SAA is in the Main Building; go in the ski-slopes doors, up the stairs to the left, go left and it's the (second?) office on your right.

    Hey,

Not trying to be vague, but that depends on a number of things. Generally, changes to courses have to be approved by committees within the University (i.e. Academic Programme Review Committee). A lot of courses were changed in the last 2ish years because of ECTS, for example some courses went from 6 to 5 modules in certain semesters.

If you want more specific information on your course, you can call into me in the SU, send me an email on Aoife.Finnerty@ul.ie or send me a PM here.

    Hope this helps,

    Aoife

Hi Thomas. Do you have a Class Rep? If so (s)he/they should be able to help with those kind of module based issues. If not, then get back to me again and we'll take it from there.

Just a general question: How many teaching weeks are left? I keep hearing about revision weeks and study weeks, so I'm just confused as to how many weeks are left with lectures. Is it true aswell, lecturers can't give new material during the revision week or w/e that week is called?

I can make a stab at this in the absence of Aoife. :)

    Presuming this is week 11...

[a] There is one more teaching week left: week 12, which is next week.

Week 13 is generally given over to the students as a study/revision week. Though some modules run optional lectures or help centres [Maths Learning Centre for example] during this week to aid with exam preparation.

[c] Regarding the last point; in the unlikely event that you have lectures or tutorials scheduled for week 13 by the lecturer; any material given out in them is NOT examinable - don't bother with it.

    Hi there,

Sorry about the delay in getting back to you. There is one Teaching Week left i.e. Week 12. Week 13 is Reading Week but it is referred to as a Teaching Week by scheduling. Although it is uncommon, it is not contrary to any regualtions for lecturers to hold classes during W13.

The SU has always argued that it is not acceptable for examinable material to be introduced during Week 13, as it does not give students enough time to assimilate the information, address any reading that may be required and then be examined on it. This is especially the case if it is not provided for in the course outline. In such a case it is a breach of regulations according to a former SU Education Officer.

I've emailed the Chair of the Academic Regulations Committee for clarification on the issue. Hopefully I'll get it for you ASAP. Sorry it's not a quick answer!

He responded this morning to say that to the best of his knowledge it was unacceptable for lecturers to give out (new) examinable material in Week 13.

He responded this morning to say that to the best of his knowledge it was unacceptable for lecturers to give out (new) examinable material in Week 13.

Unacceptable maybe but it still happens. The lecturers have to finish the full course and with some modules its absolutely ridiculous what they think that they can fit into 12/13 weeks. I will have at least one module that will have new material that will be examined but it is an unfortunate fact of having a very important topic that has to be covered.

In an ideal world this wouldn't be the case but we don't live in this perfect land where everything goes to plan and all lecturers are perfectly on time with their material. To those who have this problem start complaining when its 4 or 5 modules otherwise just buck up and accept that this year you will have to do some extra work.

A D1 is a passing grade, you will only have to repeat it if your QCA is below 2.0 after the summer exams.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 128 ✭✭JimmyMoose

weird I was gonna ask a similar question in academic lit, i got a d1 in xmas, grand cos i'm over 2.0, but if (when) i get a fail, and a fail as in a N.G, can you still repeat something with a N.G?
