But they celebrations of the day didn't exist until Guinness decided they wanted people to celebrate Guinness, where as the sporting directors created the Heineken Cup, Carling Cup Of Nations etc, not the sponsors.

Who gives a crap, either way its a drinks company promoting themselves. I have never attended an Arthur's Day event, but who gives a crap, shock horror, company creates business for itself. The same muppets complaining about Arthur's Day probably have no problem with the old traditional jolly Red Santa Claus etc, despite the fact it's a Coca-Cola creation.

There's a difference between Arthur's Day and things like the Magner's Rugby League, or Santa's suit being red...

    Those things don't annoy ME.

Except its not. And seriously, comparing Santa with Arthurs day?

Great so the problem isn't with Arthur's Day or Guinness or the people who go to the gigs and events. It's with you.

Yes, red was used before, but the 1930's campaign by a Swedish artist really created the Santa image we have today of the rosy cheeks, red outfit, big belly etc. As for your second point? Yes. It's like Arthur's Day is something completely different to any other sponsored event. It isn't. It's just an original in-house idea and project no different to sponsoring any other range of events. So it's called Arthur's Day, so who gives a flying f*ck?

Hey, what's wrong with having a day where some bands play some music and we all have a pint?!

Do me a fcuking favour! You ARE NOT celebrating Arthur's day! You're using it as another excuse to go out and get lamped like every other clown.

You couldn't give a toss about Arthur and anyone that says otherwise is talking bollocks!

    Otherwise

    Yes!... wait... I mean... No!

Oh... you little Jedi! Mind-tricking me!

What I said was a joke. The problem is people who think "Guinness" is something worth celebrating. That's it. The 250th anniversary, that was something to celebrate. The 252nd? Nope. People think "Oh, it's just an excuse to go to a gig and hang out with friends... What's the harm?" The harm is that you can do that any time you like. And really, do we need more events where people try to jam into a pub, get drunk because "Arthur's Day only happens once a year" and end up acting like ****ing idiots. Seriously, Bank Holidays, Paddy's Day, Easter, Valentine's Day, Christmas, Halloween, New Year's Eve... do we really need any more occasions to drink? Particularly a new one which was created BY A DRINK COMPANY.

I have no problem with the drinking culture. My issue is with dumb sheep who buy into this hype like puppets. It's not a real celebration, people - it was made up specifically by Diagio to herd in all the idiots & sell more booze. Congrats on being part of the easily manipulated.

Do you really see the world in such a simple, black&white way? Cheers for insinuating I'm a "dumb sheep by the way, but I think there's more to me than that.
I don't think we should buy into everything we're 'fed', but don't stereotype people, or put them in boxes. If you read my post, you'll see that I'm not exactly unaware that Arthur's Day is a maketing ploy. Do you celebrate Christmas? Do you buy branded products? Do you watch movies that aren't independently made? Give me a break.

"Lowest common denominator stuff - they're the same people who read tabloids & Nuts/FHM too, and have an "if found, please return to the pub" t-shirt."
Are you serious? I went downstairs earlier and my Mum was reading "HELLO". She has a PhD. While I personally don't read that kind of thing, I wouldn't call someone an "idiot" for doing so. Do you know that most people have different 'sides' to them? How could you label someone like that? What 'sort' of person are you?

You work nights - which I then deduce is low-skilled & low-paying shift-work. I can then deduce from that, that you either live at home or house-share because your income is low.

    It's all just logic.

    Wow!!!

You do know that Nurses, Doctors, Vets, Guards, Ambulance Drivers, Army Members, Fire Fighters etc...work nights right? Do you think that they're low-skilled and low-paid??

How's that "logic" working out for you?? Think it was more of an assumption...you know what they say about assumptions!!!

Oxygen / Electric Picnic, sure you can go to a gig anytime you like, except oh 1 bumper gig put together by some event organizers :pac::rolleyes::eek::mad:

They all tend to be heavily endorsed by drinks companies too. No harm in a drinks company actually organising 1 themselves in my opinion.

Whenever I hear "Arthur's Day", I can't help but associate it with "Love Day" from the Simpsons.

I'd hazard a guess that the majority of them don't drink Guinness and couldn't care less what day it is, so long as it's an organised day of events. It's could be Trappatoni's Day for all I care.

..and that's what people do. You can also have Christmas dinner any time you like. Or wear Shamrock and day you like.

I don't do the whole pub/booze on Easter, or Valentine's Day or Christmas or Hallowe'en or New Year's Eve.

You do know people go out who don't drink? That some people are more interested in going to the live music etc than actually celebrating/thinking about Guinness?

Yes some people act like animals. Well, like any other Thursday/Friday/Sat/Sun night for example.

Didn't we have a Traditional Fish and Chip Day a few months back with a campaign by the Irish Association of Traditional Italian Chippers or somesuch? Do the same people have issues with that? How dare they declare a Fish and Chip Day, the b@stards!!

They're not low-skilled, but they're all low paid, yeah, except for Vets & Doctors.
And I said it was a fair logical assumption, considering the fact that MOST people who work night shifts are in low-paying & low-skilled jobs. You just listed the exceptions - how does that negate the majority that you didn't list? Factory workers, security guards, etc, etc. They out-number the skilled & high paid night-workers.

This thread is the first I've heard of it this year...have they given up marketing the idea outside of the bigger urban centres?

But your analogy is still crap because Coke didn't dream up Christmas in order to sell more Coke (the way Guinness is with Arthur's day). And Santa was still around, regardless of what he clobber he was wearing.

Besides, Santa's been wearing red since the 19th Century.

Yeh it may be a 100% marketing ploy by a drinks company, and to be honest I couldnt care less about Arthur or Guinness cant stand the stuff but I will be heading out as they do put on a lot of good gigs and events for it. So what should we do never mind that great gigs that on tonight im going to be stubborn and sit at home im not a sheep i refuse to fall for there marketing ploy no i couldnt care less plus it bring in tourists which is good for the economy. Like most I like living my life and enjoying it and if it get people to go out and have a good time weres the harm? We have enough things to worry about in this world if it gives people a few hours of escapism then why not.

Maybe some people don't need to "escape" their mundane lives. I enjoy my job, I enjoy my family, I enjoy getting stoned with friends, I enjoy playing music, I enjoy going to the gym, and I enjoy taking LSD in moderation.
I don't need someone to tell me when I can or can't do these things. I don't need a special "stoner" day, just so I can go all out - I can do what I want when I want & with whomever I want.

I'm waiting for Marlboro Lights Day.

Not cos I smoke but cos there will at least be some parity between legally available drugs.

Yeah and this Arthur "Guinness" character is out of folklore and mythology.
It's not like he really exists.

As if his surname was coincidently the same name as the drink he was selling
