I go by quality. Most of my clothes would be well known brands because they last longer and are a better fit.
For food aldi and lidl are very good. However, some things like bread, beans and condiments are manky in aldi. Wouldnt be a fan of their frozen food either.

I have to laugh at people saying the shops own brand is crap
Most shops own brand are made in the same factory as named brands
My niece went to tayto park and in the factory she saw the Aldis spud chrisps being made there Same with tesco beans (not the stripy ones) bachelors make them and many other food products too cant recall at the moment

    Tayto V King = Tayto
    Heinz V Chef = Chef
Ben Sherman, Lacoste, Fred Perry etc = Knacker

I agree with all of this. Especially the bit about Lacoste and Fred Perry.

I do like certain clothing brands some of which are expensive but conversely I also wear normal cheap stuff too.

As for what others wears: I couldn't care less.

You really should take that off and let someone wash it! :pac:

Tesco own brand chocolate and sweets are the business and so much cheaper than the branded types.

I'm not a snob at all when it comes to food items but some branded items are just better - Fairy washing up liquid, Lyons tea and Aquafresh toothpaste (might not be any better but I love the stripes :D).

I found that a lot of cheaper clothes fall apart / shrink after a couple of weeks.

A number of years ago I went to the US and bought a load of designer tshirts / jeans in a outlet store. I have not looked back since.

I am still wearing the same Tommy Hilfiger T Shirt that I bought in 2005. Well worth the $25 I paid.

i have few Ralph Lauren shirts bought 10 years ago and they still do their job, quality is superb!

Nobody makes crisps like Tayto surely!

    King ftw

I'm far from being a Dub, but that still annoys me! If it's Tayto, it's Tayto... If it's Walkers, it's another brand of crips!

Coke, Hoover, Xerox, Jacuzzi, AstroTurf, Baggies, Band-Aid, Beer Nuts, Breathalyzer, Dumpster, Frisbee, Hi-Liter, Hula-Hoop, Jacuzzi, Jeep, Jell-O, Jockey Shorts, Kitty Litter, Magic Marker, Novocain, Ping-Pong, Play-Doh, Post-it Note, Q-Tip, Realtor, Rollerblade, Scotch Tape, Scrabble, Sheetrock, Slim Jim, Styrofoam, Super glue, Technicolor, Teflon, TelePrompTer, Vaseline, Velcro, Walkman...

It's called a genericized trademark. It happens. Get over it.

    I've never been into Guineys.

Look out for their offers on Egyptian cotton bed linen they have from time to time. It's very high quality stuff that would cost 8 or 10 times the price elsewhere.

Anybody wearing Superdry , Bench etc is probably a scumbag too.

Brand snob , me ? YES.

I used to know a guy that only bought oakley sunglasses...

set him back 150-200 euro a pair, over 3 years i saw him lose/break 5 pairs, waste of money.

I agree with all of this. Especially the bit about Lacoste and Fred Perry.

Lacoste runners are kind of debatable, apart from that all I've seen from them is tracksuits but Fred Perry is most definitely knacker wear.

I don't tend to worry about brands, never really have.

I'll buy my jeans and stuff in pennies because it's cheap...the only thing i ever consistantly pay a lot for is my footwear...i tend to tear through cheap ass shoes and trainers so i don't mind paying good cash for something that will last a long time and not **** up my knees.

I can honestly say the only time i ever genuinely chased a certain brand was when i was buying my Technics...pretty much the industry standard for DJing so had to be done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,583 ✭✭✭mconigol

i don't shop in Pennys or Dunnes.

There's no way clothes can be produced that cheaply without some poor factory worker somewhere getting screwed over.

^I've never noticed a big difference between the two brands.

You must have no tastebuds if you can't tell the difference between tayto and walkers :P I like them both but they have totally different flavours.

The only food I wouldn't buy supermarket versions of are Hellmans mayo and Heinz beans. I did relent once a couple of months ago due to the high price of hellmans in comparision and ended up throwing most of the jar in the bin. Other than that, the supermarket stuff is usually decent enough. Once it's not the cheapest 'value' range or whatever, they're usually pretty bad.

I don't buy clothes in Penny's cause every other person walking down the street could be wearing the same as you. And I'd rather my clothes lasted longer than a few wears.

I dont understand why people pay extra for branded water. Fair enough some people might not like the taste of chlorine off the tap water but all bottled water it pretty much the same. Theres not much taste can be gotten off of water anyway. Why pay 10 times the price for a bottle of Evian ?

I will never buy anything with the Playboy logo.

If that's brand snobbery I'll happily admit to it.

I don't understand why grown women would buy any Playboy-branded products, and when I see girls (children) with Playboy gear it makes me feel slightly sick.

It's a good way of sorting out the scumbags from the rest of the world, same goes with anyone who reads the Daily Mail or had an interest in the lives of Jordan/katie price or any of that other crap.

Brain dead scumbags the lot of them.

the older you get the less clothes labels matter, when you're 14 you wouldnt dream of wearing something from Dunnes, now its the only place I buy plain t-shirts, 5 quid for a fitted 100% cotton white tshirt

Completely disagree. I buy decent quality clothing because anything else is ultimately a false economy; my work shirts are usually Thomas Pink or Arrow, casual stuff is usually Boss or Paul Smith, because it just lasts much longer, and now I'm older I'm less concerned about fashion, so it doesn't matter if I'm not going to buy as often. Everything I've ever bought from the likes of Top Man or River Island has gone out of shape or fallen apart after a few washes, whereas I've got Boss long-sleeved tees and knits I've been wearing for the last 5-6 years. Same with shoes; I seem to destroy them so now I get shoes with decent soles (that can be repaired). The only thing I won't spend hundreds on is trainers, because it doesn't seem to matter how much I spend, they'll be worn out in six months.

All this doesn't mean I pay top dollar, but if you can get decent brands in the sales, they'll do you better than cheapo brands that you'll end up buying 4-5 times over compared to the good stuff.

I'm less snobby about supermarkets now, but that's only because all Irish supermarkets are crap anyway so you may as well go to Lidl as Tesco or Dunnes.

Maybe its a generational thing..... I like fred perry stuff because of the whole skin-head/mod style from the 80's .... does that make me a scum-bag??

you win and lose with them all really. i'm not really a brand snob, but i do like certain brands.

i have a few pairs of penneys jeans i bought a few years ago which are in great nick, but bought a new pair last week and they are ripped already (there must have been **** thread used on the pockets)

but on flipside, i have a few A&F shirts which are great - but bought another one this summer and there's a hole in the sleeve (again, **** thread i assume!) kinda disappointed!

won't wear penneys tops or hoodies anymore though cos of shrinkage

lacoste shoes are crap! i dunno why they charge so much money for a pair of cardboard shoes that hurt your feet! i'll stick with my air jordans thanks :P

i try most stuff, but will always try to stick with good quality items.

btw, chef ketchup is rank!! yuccckkk heinz all the way :p

    Its not either or FFS

On the other hand theres little guarantee that clothes bought anyplace more expensive will be produced under any better conditions. Look at the outcry over conditions in factories supplying Nike & Gap for gawdsake and their clothes could hardly be described as cheap.
