I flew with Aer Lingus to from Dublin to Krakow two weeks ago - when we landed in Krakow nobody clapped.

Return flight to Dublin last week, when our plane landed people clapped.

    Strange!

Does anyone remember the Ryanair 'song' that they used to play? It was a few years back and was f*cking atrocious. It had lyrics and everything.[/QUOTE]

It's not a Swineair thing necessarily. Four years ago, someone clapped on landing in Dublin on the Star Alliance-branded BMI A320 flying from Heathrow

He only did it when the pilot announced that the plane was delayed with a faulty engine and ended up flying on one engine. So perhaps he had a valid reason, but still..

Last time I landed in Amsterdam (Easyjet from Belfast) I heard (I think) one person clapping.

Hopefully they felt like an idiot when noone else joined in.

Only time I heard clapping in a cinema was years ago at a screening of "In the name of the Father" in Dublin. Given the subject matter and the fact that the clappers were all standing together in a group I assumed it was some kind of group outing of young shinners (or some judean faction).

Maybe it's the poles being happy because they are getting their 3 month dole check?

As someone who has overcome a fear of flying, I don't clap when a plane lands, but I understand why people do it.

Is it just an Irish thing?
I have never seen this on any other airline bar Airlingus and Ryanair

A few at the back of the plane tried starting an applause on an Easyjet flight that I was on into Belfast a couple weeks ago.

Nothing out of the ordinary on it, bar it being (according to the captain) a few minutes ahead of schedule. Although I reakon alot of the airlines now exaggerate the flight times so they can claim they land ahead of schedule.

Only experienced this once, when a flight I was on from Birmingham made an emergency landing in Manchester, a few hours later they loaded us onto another flight home, and we all gave out a right roar when we actually landed in Dublin. We were all mostly on a pisstake by then, we'd had a pretty good old time in Manchester airport, the entire planeload of us.

Wouldnt mind it if the pilot does something impressive or if theres insanely bad turbulence where you're overjoyed to have gotten to the ground safely, but on landing in Dublin from Malaga on a boring aul standard flight? **** off!

As for the cinema, the only time I remember applause is during snakes on a plane when Samuel L says THE line.

This used to happen all the time on flights to Greece by Greek travellers, was great craic :) Doesn't happen as much now though, cynicism has set in :(

The 'little fanfare tune' has nothing to do with the quality of the landing.

what is it for? a "congratulations you're not dead" jingle?:P

Iv been overseas 3 times with the DF, everytime we land coming home at the end of a mission the plane just erupts with claps and screams.

    Just relief of getting home.

I was on a Ryanair Flight when people started clapping as it landed, a large group of fellas started shouting "ENCORE" "ENCORE".:D

Once on a Ryanair flight I was on, the stewardess got into a giggling fit while giving the final announcements after we landed and were taxiing to the stand. She managed to finish the announcements, and received a huge round of applause. :D It was well deserved.

I'm relieved that I'm not the only one who has experienced terrible landings with Ryanair. Usually at Knock.

I'm too busy hanging onto the seat in front of me for dear life to clap but there's always someone who does. :D

I used to love flying before I started using Ryanair. :(

I presume you heard about this close shave at Knock several years back?

If you feel that it's a notable achievement and something clap-worthy to be able to fly and land a plane, then why would you put your life on the line in the first place?

Actually that reasoning doesn't exactly fit... there is still something very odd about it though.

    Thanks, I think! :D

Landed at Knock in February in zero visibility. Absolutely atrocious. Can't even remember if anyone clapped!!

Sumburgh Airport in August, God I thought we were for it, and I was only 14 so had really no concept of danger or death.... according to my uncle who lived in Shetland, some times they had to turn around and head back to Wick because the conditions were too bad!!

Haven't really seen this done v often tbh... Although a couple of years ago we were on a chartered flight that got delayed by about five hours.... We were all onboard and waiting for a spot in Dublin to land, so we were all given access to the bar even though we hadn't actually taken off...... Queue seven hours later everyone half steamed and glad to be off the damn plane, I'm telling ya there was a fierce round of applause..... :D

I started clapping on a ryanair flight back from Portugal a couple of weeks ago just because a Mr Pat Kenny was on board.

Was so glad he got home safe i gave an aul bula bos to the pilot.

    Go on Pat!

A little of topic but anyone notice how they always say on Ryanair, "Another flight landed on time, last year over 90% of our flights landed on time" even if the flight is late?! Annoying!

I think its such a ridiculous thing, have seen it happen numerous times (even on flights where there was no turbulence and with a perfect landing) I'd love to stand up and ask all the twats clapping do they also clap when the bus driver arrives at the bus station!

I remember being in the cinema when the Titanic was out, and I musty admit I found myself joining in with the clapping, while at the same time questioning myself about who exactly we were clapping, I was thinking that there may be little men behind the screen keeping the whole thing going like oompaloompa sort of things so I reckoned that's why we were clapping.

I've heard a lot of pilots get the clap. It must be somthing to do with being away from home so much.

I don't clap people for doing the job they're paid for.

Bumpy landings at Knock are not exclusive to Ryanair. Dont think I have ever had a smooth landing there. Although I've never clapped a landing there either.
