Clapping on a plane once it lands

Recently had a swineair flight that landed at a such a steep angle that I almost got whiplash.. When the plane slowed down on it's taxi to the dock everybody started clapping after the "WELCOME TO YET ANOTHER ON TIME FLIGHT"...

If a black hole opened up in front of me I'd have jumped into it.

Anyone else witness such cringeworthy cringeness?

I have never been on a flight where this happened as far as I can recall, could understand if people are going on holidays and are already pissed

I've been to the cinema where people clapped at the end.

It was a normal screening, not a film festival, nobody involved in the production was present.

Whist with your clapping would ya!

It's supposed to land, fooktards, do you clap when the rubbish truck takes your bin contents?!

I dont get this at all.

If its been a particulary rough flight or decent/landing, then just maybe.

But was on a flight a couple of weeks ago, landing seemed perfectly normal, and smooth, even then, there was a small ripple of claps.

I was in Poland the week their whole government got killed in a plane crash. It happened on the Saturday morning and everything closed down inc the festival we were supposed to attend. Got a flight home to Cork on the Monday. You could feel the tension in the air the whole flight. I was totally mangled on vodka as i'm not a great flier anyway..

The flight landed perfectly and everyone started clapping....The sense of relief was immense around the plane...

Any other time would be cringe- worthy..

Was on a Ryanair flight last year which had to land at night in a thunderstorm. The runaway had been flooded earlier that day. After circling 2 or 3 times, the pilot landed it gently and a lot of relieved passengers gave him a clap. Mine was a slow sarcastic one of course.

regarding the "Yet another on time flight" i heard that Ryanair adds time to their flights on paper so that when it lands they can claim that it's early. does anybody know if this is true?

it felt a bit strange when my flight from Edinburgh to Shannon was delayed by about 40 minutes and still arrived on time

and regarding clapping on planes and in cinemas...well, people are stupid. a load of them did it after harry potter two weeks ago

At least they waited until the plane was stopped at the stand. I've seen it once but it happened directly after the plane had touched down despite most fatal plane accidents happening between that point and the end of the runway.

as far as i know this started off on package holiday flights but it does seem to be spreading its very annoying.

At the end of the movie, everyone stood up (apart from 3 Irish lads) and sang the American National Anthem.

I'd feel more comfortable if people just clapped.

Get the Madrid - Dublin Ryanair flight a fair bit and the Spanish clap everytime. They just like making a lot of noise at every opportunity and love the sound of themselves making that noise...I remember we'd a bit of turbulance once and everyone started shouting and going, "WooooOOOOOOOoooooooooOOOOoooooo". For the love of god shut up! You're frightening the life out of me. You wouldn't think they were ruled by a dictator for 40 years the way they react to even the slightest upset or occurance (landing a plane ffs). Makes me want to move country everytime I hear them at it.

doesnt bother me, it happens alot, especially in foreign countries or after long flights. i love flying and dont see the need to clap as it is normally routine, but alot of people are nervous flyers and they are relieved when they get there safely.

dont see why it bothers anybody, its just clapping for f*ck sake.

flew by Ryanair from newcastle to dublin before and the plane nearly went through the runway, a load of girls screamed and everything and myself and the lads nearly had strokes! And then they played that little fanfare tune at the end as though it was a decent landing! bastards

When the first clap starts --- I go mad and starting clapping really loudly and shouting "fúck yeah.. wooooooo yeeeaaaaaaah" just for mockery sake. I have a great time doing it too... friends travelling with me... either join in or hang their heads in shame, depending on their mood

Every airline does this, they allow a window of x amount of mins (20?) and the time we're told we'll land is the maximum they expect.

I've seen the clapping on planes plenty of times, doesn't bother me unduly. As for the cinema, it's not unusual in America to have people clapping and jeering during and after films... strange... but you're allowed free refills of coke so...

Just home from a weekend in the sun and it happened on the plane going both ways! I couldn't believe it! No one claps for me every time I complete one of my every day tasks in my job! Jealous!!

You kind of have it, but its not as sordid as you make it sound. They dont do it on paper so they can claim it was early, they overestimate how long it will take to get to the destination, so if there is a delay leaving the airport, they will still land on time.

There you go, it worked out for you. If you had a connecting flight, or a bus or train to catch you would have still been able to catch it despite a forty minute delay on the other end. Thank you Ryanair for your foresight.

Its a pity more airlines didnt do it.

The 'little fanfare tune' has nothing to do with the quality of the landing.
