On boards and elsewhere there seems to be this wierd notion of late that racism is somehow less unacceptable if its directed at a narrower more specific target group.

i.e. one can get away with comments regarding specific nationalities within Africa that would get one flamed/banned if directed at Africans in general.

Similarly in relation to Europeans some people seem to have this delusion that by saying they "dont mind" people from Poland but bad mouth Romanians their racism is somehow of a more sophisticated form.

It's not "of late", it's always the way and it makes sense.

It's not racism also, it's observations of activities for whatever socioeconomic or cultural reasons.

It's also not nice to call people "racist", and people should be careful before doing so, especially since it can discourage freedom of expression or communication.

its like hating junkies , people playing music on the bus or smokers , its taking traits a group share that you dont like , and dislike the group because of it, its not racism , you dont know every junkie in dublin but youd keep away from them , just like I dont know every nigerian but id never give them any money

Any Nigerians I know or have met have been grand to be honest. No common negative cultural traits between them. I wouldn't compare them to the English because whenever you meet a group of English men they're drunk and obnoxious.

The only reason I can think of to speak negatively of Nigerians is all that phone/internet scamming that goes on. That's hardly representative of such a huge country.

I started off by making it clear that I'm speaking about the people I've come across. It's based on experience and not a stereotype.

So every time you've ever met two or more Englishmen, they've been drunk and obnoxious? Every time? Every. Single. Time? OK. Sure. Not a stereotype at all.

Nigeria has a lot of different ethnic groups, and I'm not sure which ones come with the culture that is so unpopular. But I would observe that it's not racist to say that you don't like a particular culture - I don't think anyone would jump down your throat of you said you didn't like Nazi Germany (more of a fad than a culture, I suppose) or the culture that generates and supports the Taleban in Afghanistan.

Rejecting a culture says nothing about a 'race'.

Since when was Nazism a "culture"

I was out having a couple of beers the other day, and I got chatting to this black lad at the bar. We'd barely exchanged a few sentences before he said to me, "I'm not from Nigeria btw, I'm Angolan".

Reminded me of times where you'd point out that you were Irish rather than English and would be treated better.

Do we hate Nigerians that much? And if so, why? And, is it merited?

Of course once I found out that he wasn't Nigerian we ended up getting sh1tfaced.:pac: Didn't back any winners though.

That would be why I clarified that it was a 'fad' rather than a culture in the post. Have another look.

nigerians have a bad rap in africa so i have heard.

I've noticed that. I an avid reader and I've read several novels by African authors (all from various different African countries) and they seem to have a lot of negative things to say about Nigerians. I don't understand why. I've met a few Nigerians and I thought they were all sound.

    lol, so much ignorance ITT

to the people saying "oh even the other africans hate nigeria" as if that's some sort of justification... what? that's just typical national pride. a LOT of irish people will talk sh*t about england and badmouth it, but we all know that it is just bullsh*t bred into them by their parents/some other source

nigeria is a huge country, and you must keep in mind that a lot of people who tell you some anecdote about nigerians use "nigerians" as a synonym for any black african nationality
