Is Nigeria the new England?

I was out having a couple of beers the other day, and I got chatting to this black lad at the bar. We'd barely exchanged a few sentences before he said to me, "I'm not from Nigeria btw, I'm Angolan".

Reminded me of times where you'd point out that you were Irish rather than English and would be treated better.

Do we hate Nigerians that much? And if so, why? And, is it merited?

Of course once I found out that he wasn't Nigerian we ended up getting sh1tfaced.:pac: Didn't back any winners though.

No, he was just pointing that he wasn't Nigerian. If he went into more specific's like "I hate them nigerians" or "don't compare me to them, we're nothing alike" then you'd have a case.

No but I'd guess it's a pretty safe bet. Most black people I've met in Ireland are Nigerian.
I gave a lift to a guy a while back so he could get into town, turns out he was from Zimbabwe. Kinda had an Aussie accent so that why I asked where he was from.

even my african friends hate nigerians, I have never met anyone black/white/asian/african/muslim who could say anything positive about that hell hole

I'm moving in with a cool Nigerian guy in the next few days if we find enough people.. People think Ireland is racist.. Nope. Go somewhere where expats don't have to worry about people from home knowing their thoughts and you'll find some seriously racist people.

It's amazing.. Americans, Canadians, Irish, British etc. talk here about Nigerians as if their dogs and they do it so openly. Feking BS.

Any Nigerians I know or have met have been grand to be honest. No common negative cultural traits between them. I wouldn't compare them to the English because whenever you meet a group of English men they're drunk and obnoxious.

The only reason I can think of to speak negatively of Nigerians is all that phone/internet scamming that goes on. That's hardly representative of such a huge country.

I went on a date with a Nigerian girl she told me awfull things about Nigeria and how people behave over there i was fairly shocked by it so i from what she told me about the culture of violence there im not surprised some people are wary or dislike Nigerians.

Maybe all this time the people who we thought were nigerians were actually angolans who didn't want to admit they were from angola:eek:

Same thing the Irish often do when away from home. "I'm not English, I'm Irish." An attempt to distance oneself from what may be an unpopular nationality.

OP - reminds me of some lads I knew in London, that were from Zimbabwe and Ghana. When I first met them, they went out of their way to point out they weren't Nigerian. They had absolute contempt for Nigerians actually.

Bastard hit me for a pint of Carlsberg. Then I hit him for a Bottle of McArdle's. Then he hit me again for another Carlsberg, so I hit him right back for another McArdles. Then he hits me AGAIN for another Carlsberg... well there was no way I was letting that go....

This, a lot of Africans have a hatred against Nigerians.

Also Nigeria is one of the most corrupt countries in the world.

Not true. The last time I met a group of English people, they were politely looking for the National Gallery, whilst clearly sober.

Well from what I’ve heard and experienced (Some are complete gansters in the Taxi business) I would be very cautious with Nigerians.

They don't have that rep for nothing and they seem to have different values that they think they can bring here and get away. They don't want to play by our rules here.

Obviously it’s not fair to tarnish all Nigerians like this but IMO some Nigerians give the whole of Africa a very bad rep over here and i would fully understand why other Africans go out of their way to let you know they are not from there.

The area where my aunt and a few of my cousins live has a large-ish Nigerian community and they've all had trouble from Nigerian neighbours in the past few years. One of my cousins married a Nigerian and it went pretty badly too.

The bad experiences I'm talking about pretty much boils down to an overly aggressive/defensive attitude, which seems to be from a "defend our community and assume everyone else is an enemy" attitude. I am 100% sure (from experience) that this is not what all or even most Nigerians are like, but sadly the majority that my family has had interaction with have been like this, and have caused a whole lot of trouble for everyone around them. Judging from the trouble my relatives had, they don't seem to have respect for anything.

I'd love to be perfectly reasonable and logical, and remind myself that you can't judge one person on another person's behaviour, but I have to admit that if I had new neighbours, I'd be put off going over to say hello if they were Nigerian, whereas if I heard they were Angolan I would. Certainly when introduced to someone Nigerian I don't assume they're going to be aggressive, but thinking abstractly about it I do relate a certain attitude with the nationality.
