If he's only 24 pts behind Sheehy now then it's a done deal that he'll overtake him if not next year then most certainly the year after. Probably next year though.

Must be said that teams play more games nowadays with the qualifiers and quarter finals added in, so you'd have to look at averages aswell, and how much a player scored in the really big/important games as opposed to those first round wallopings of the likes of Clare or Carlow.

But the fact Gooch averages more scores in Croke Park than any other venue suugests that his stats would stack up no matter what way you look at it.

In terms of averages Matt Connor from Offaly was unreal, and more recently Mattie Forde aswell. But those guys didn't get to play as many games.

Several if not all of these were their team's main freetaker, not taking anything away from that, many of their frees were very well taken.

Just wondering who would have scored the most from open play. There's probably no stats for that. In football, I'd say someone like Pat Spillane scored a lot of points from play.

Scored from play per game it would have to be either Colm Cooper or Matt Connor (and looks to be most likely Matt Connor). Based on the fact that both were so rarely held scoreless and a regular amount of matches per season were the highest scorer from play for their team. Also the fact that they got plenty goals each season from play.

I doubt it is possible to compile stats for it. For Cooper possibly but you'd have to collect all the match reports from a paper like the Kerryman and subtract how many of his scores are marked as (f) - frees.

Does anyone know if Cooper has ever been held scoreless from play at intercount level? (Checked this and he was held scorless this year from play and Donaghy as well in league against Mayo). I wonder at championship level at intercounty?

Found an article in Kerryman by coincidence which claims Matt Connor as all time top league and championship scorer.

In 4 games in 1980 championship Connor scored 5-31. His record is noted as 38-383 for league and championship between '78 and '84. Hard to see that volume of scoring ever being topped.

It lists Cooper's total up until the end of last year as 16-192

He is in second place in the scorer's chart for this year with 1-24 (with the final to come) so I reckon he is on 17-216 to date, which is a total of 267 points.

Only needs 6 points in the final to overtake Ben Brosnan in top scorer list. I'd say Ben is sweating a bit after last weekend's performance.

Cant really see any Donegal or Dublin player getting up there now even with potentially two games left given none of them are in the top ten scorers at the moment, and given Donegal's involvment in the semi (don't score all that much and don't concede all that much) and the fact that it's pretty rare for a massive score to be racked up in the final.

Overall I'd imagine Gooch has a serious shot of overtaking Mikey Sheehy given the difference is currently 25 points. He has the final yet to play this year and barring injury and if he keeps up his previous average I'd say he has a serious shout of doing it next year. Given the fact that he only turned 28 in June depending on how long more he keeps going he has to be in with a serious shout of setting out a absolutely huge haul.

Terracetalk site shows a few occasions - probably worth checking if these were sub appearance/how long he was on the pitch in these games

I think Cooper is on a total of 28-343 for both championship and league
Terracetalk had him on 11-111 for the league up to and including 2010 and I reckon he scored 21 points in the league this year which takes him up to
11-132 which gives a combined 165 points in the league

Championship 267 :17-216
League 165: 11-132
Combined Inter-county 432 : 28-348

Not that impossible that he might get the overall title off Connor depending on how long more he plays. Not inconceivable that Cooper could play for another 5 years.

Kinda a shame Connor didnt break the total 500 mark - still an awesome achievement.
