Regarding Dunnes opening hours: It's actually
    Monday/Tuesday: 8.30 - 8
    Wednesday: 8.30 - 9
    Thursday/Friday: 8.30- 10
    Saturday: 8.30 - 8
    Sunday: 10 - 8

    *dunnes nerd*

Don't forget that there's both an Aldi AND a Lidl in Maynooth. The Aldi is fairly easy to spot. The Lidl is down by the motorway. Not so great if you're on campus, but if you're down in the housing estates past the train station, it could be a good place to shop.

    Aldi Opening Hours:
    Monday - Wednesday 9:00am - 8:00pm
    Thursday - Friday 9:00am - 9:00pm
    Saturday 9:00am - 8:00pm
    Sunday 11:00am - 7:00pm

    Lidl Opening Hours:
    Mon-Sat 8:00-21:00
    Sun 10:30-19:00

Cheapest food in town is definitely the Elite on Main St beside Caulfields hands down (Myself and a friend made it a mission to go to every food place possible in Maynooth last year).

Start thinking about the end now. What would you like to do next? The Career Guidance Office is extremely helpful in this regard. I never actually went in for a meeting but I found a good MSc course on the basis of Prospects magazine. I never anticipated that I would be doing what I am doing next year now.

The first two three years although they don't count really for the degree they do count to anyone who sees your transcripts. So work hard! The whole lark of saying that the first and second years (or third if you're in a four year degree) don't matter is simply not true. It is possible to get offered a place on a course on your first and second year results.

After your first year see if there is related work experience in the university. The college runs SPUR programmes. If you know people currently involved in the field that you are aiming to work in ask them. It will do much more service to your CV than unrelated work. This is one of my regrets.

Get involved in clubs and societies. They are hugely useful and they are a great means of meeting new people particularly in those first few weeks. Also, in those first few weeks don't feel embarrassed about saying hi to the person beside you and getting to know them. That's how a lot of friends are made. (A personal plug although I'm leaving the university would be for Maynooth Christian Union - if you are in any way interested or curious about Christianity I'd recommend it to anyone. I've made invaluable friends in Maynooth, all over Ireland and also in the UK through the Christian Union movement. If you have any questions about this PM me.)

If you want to switch courses in first year or at the end of first year get in touch with the Admissions Office. Also don't get disappointed if it gets rejected. I was studying BA Politics at the start of my degree, I wanted to move to Computer Science & Software Engineering but I moved to BA (Computer Science & Philosophy) instead. I would have regretted being in CSSE now that I think of it. Things work out in funny ways, even if you think you know what you want to do now life can take you in unexpected directions.

You will never have as much free time in your life as you will have at university. Use it to do something you mightn't get the chance to do after you finish college. I used it to build up my faith and that of others mainly through CU, but you may have other interests that you'd like to develop in that time. Use it because in work and in other areas of life you mightn't get as much time until retirement :pac:

More to come when I rack my brain a little.

My only piece of advice to anyone starting college is not to be consumed by the drink culture you may find there.

And also to note that the people that say they are out drinking all the time and who you think do no study are usually the ones getting the highest grades in their exams.

College is very competitive academically and if you don't keep up you will be left behind.

Apart from that enjoy every single minute of it.

Engage with new and different people and don't stick to your comfort zones.

All this information is great thanks! I'm a mature starting this year studying Community and Youth. That SPURS programme sounds great must cheak that out. I have a question and its probably stupid but here goes ... I'm hoping to get the bus from Robertstown or Clane each day and I am wondering do I have to phone the company in advance to book my place on the bus? This may be a silly question but better to know! :D:D

I am a soon to be mature student of 25 years of age and I have found this tread excellent. I don't really know what to expect at Maynooth but from the open/shadow days I've attended I know I want to go there... The nerves and excitement is very much starting to kick in now! I Still have lots and lots to sort out to which I reckon this tread will prove invaluable so cheers all for any info provided. Sure enough I will have questions to come. :)

If you're living in River Apartments, invest in a long (c.3 metre) ethernet cable - the cable you get from the Residence Office (for a fiver deposit) is quite short, and won't stretch from your desk socket to your bed where you're eating noodles and streaming episodes of family guy;)

I have a question to ask and not sure of the right place but here goes .... I am starting in Maynooth on 12 Sept and hope to get the bus from Clane. My Question is does anyone know when the buses start to run to Maynooth? Do I book a ticket or just turn up on the day and get a ticket?
I know this might sound stupid but I don't drive and transport is a real worry for me.
Thanks if anyone can help me! :)

The J. J. Kavanagh bus won't run regularly until everyone returns back for lectures on the 19th of September, but they ran a service last year (and most likely this year) during the Orientation week. However, instead of the three services a day they normally run, it's just one bus in the morning and one bus in the evening.

When the bus passes through Clane in the morning, it always stops at the petrol station at the northernmost part of the town. It continued down the Kilcock Road for most of the year, but when that was closed off due to roadworks, the bus went east down the Dublin/New Road and connecting onto the Straffan Road. Whether it shall continue to do so for the next year, I don't know - it might, because it was about ten minutes faster that way. If it keeps going up to Kilcock, it'll stop outside Loretta's and the Fujifilm place. Otherwise, it'll stop along the wall of the petrol station on the Dublin Road. It should be easy to spot - there were always about ten people waiting for the bus in Clane at any time. It was one of the busier stops. Generally, the bus would arrive there at about 8:30. During orientation, the bus left Maynooth at around 17:00.

The prices all depended on where you were getting picked up and dropped off. From Clane, it was really cheap - I think I heard it was about €2 a trip. If you're going to be taking the bus all week, you should probably get a Weekly Ticket. I don't know how much you would pay for those in Clane, but I'd reckon it'd be between €10 and €15, so you'll get some saving from getting the Weekly, and you won't have to keep going for change every time you board. You can get these right from the driver at the beginning of each week - just ask for one. The drivers generally don't even check for Weeklies if they know you keep buying them, and are pretty friendly overall. Especially Lucky. Lucky is a legend. :p

Thank you so much for the help it a big relief and hopefully the bus will run during orientation week. It great to know I won't be walking anyway!
Thanks again I will give them a call nearer time to make sure. :D

    Question:

I'm from kilkenny, once I'm accepted into NUIM and know when I'm heading up, what do I bring with me? What supplies does a first year need? and is there anything that you wish you'd known before going into first year? Like which clubs/socs are good and which are a joke?

I am also going into NUIM next month, if I get offered a place obviously.

    My guess on what we will need would be;
    - Books
    - Notepads, pens, pencils (probably depends on your course) etc.
    - Packed suitcase if your going for accomodation
    - Bed linen also if you want accomodation

From what I've heard the music society is really good. That is the one I want to join and I've spoken with people who are in it. I'm not sure about any of the other clubs/socs because I haven't extensively researched all the rest.

You really won't need that much at all tbh.
Pens and paper to take notes.
Anything you need for a bedroom (bed stuff, clothes, stuff to personalise it)

Don't bother buying any books until you have a booklist and know whether the books are actually a necessity

You won't need anything at all for orientation week anyway and you'll soon work out afterwards what you do and don't need

I think the academic advisory office and the freshers packs contain some pens/pads, as well as old reliables like pot-noodle, redbull and durex:p

Look out for some Boardsies giving tours!!:)

The Academic Advisory Office of Sheer Awesomeness does indeed do refill pads, for free. But not pens. Highlighter pens sure. Not the other kind I don't think, unless it's changing this year. I get surprised seeing people buying loads of refill pads, I haven't paid for paper in three years.

  • Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 7,442 Mod ✭✭✭✭XxMCRxBabyxX

I always buy my refill pads because I like the ones with the dividers. So much easier than trying to organise my notes later. I just keep each in their own little section and I'm grand.

But I'm the same person who dedicates a folder to each module as well. I print out all the moodle notes and then take my written notes and have them all organised together in my folders! I used to type up my notes too but gave up on that.

Yea, I might be a bit of a loser...

No, not at all! I've shelves full of folders here. Spending a little time every day/week making sure everything is organised, makes everything so much easier and less stressful for me when it comes to exam time. No messing around trying to find things or get ready or organised. Just open and start studying.

Second semester of second and third year I spent every Saturday morning typing up my week's notes. Three or four hours a week is all it took. For a start, it helps me because I've crappy handwriting, and studying for your exams is way easier when you don't have to decipher the strange hieroglyphics you've scrawled. Secondly... it's a little reinforcement of what you've covered in class. That little extra periodically really helps retention. Well, for me anyway. There was a noticeable increase in my marks during the semesters where I was more organised and kept everything typed up.

I'd definitely recommend typing up notes to anyone, but I think you really have to be on it from the start. Hard to catch up later on if you take loads of notes in class.

Personally I think separate folders, or at least notepads, per module is definite must.

When I went on those orientation tours in 1st year, my person didn't know the south campus at all, past the library. Bit unfortunate because I'm a maths student and don't see the north campus for months at a time!

Ah no, we're given an orientation meeting ourselves with little facts and stuff about the campus, so they should be improved since then:)
