Hard to tell, we generally suck at discerning where sounds are actually coming from. Just have to wait and see.

Especially with fear, and there'd probably have been echoes etc as well. Time will tell.

What reason would there have been to protect them? These weren't politicians they were just kids and young adults.
The former prime minister had been there and as said it seems the current pm was due to go there too.

    It's called Islamic Fundamentalism.

How do you know they are responsible?

But we need to be careful not to sell our freedom down the river trying to placate other cultures.

I agree and the last thing we want to do is start passing laws which restrict our freedom because of extremists. That would be like handing them victory imo.

    It's called Islamic Fundamentalism.

Some people are saying that it could be a Neo-Nazi group. The gunman on the island was dressed in a police uniform and had blond hair and blue eyes (apparently). It would make sense. The Norwegian Labour Party and Norwegian Labour Youth movement seem to be the target. These are center-left groups. Neo-Nazis have been known to attack left leaning groups. Although they aren't ruling out Islamic terrorist groups yet.

How do you know they are responsible?

    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/23/world/europe/23oslo.html?hp
A terror group, Ansar al-Jihad al-Alami, or the Helpers of the Global Jihad, issued a statement claiming responsibility for the attack, according to Will McCants, a terrorism analyst at C.N.A., a research institute that studies terrorism. The message said the attack was a response to Norwegian forces’ presence in Afghanistan and to unspecified insults to the Prophet Muhammad. “We have warned since the Stockholm raid of more operations,” the group said, according to Mr. McCants’ translation, apparently referring to a bombing in Sweden in December 2010. “What you see is only the beginning, and there is more to come.” The claim could not be confirmed.

Norway is a member of the NATO alliance and has a small fighting contingent in Afghanistan. It was one of several countries named by Ayman al-Zawahri, the leader of Al Qaeda, as potential targets for attack. In 2006, Norwegian newspapers reprinted Danish cartoons that angered Muslims by lampooning Muhammad. Norway has also historically been a frequent participant in peacekeeping missions and a host for diplomatic talks, including the 1993 Oslo Accords between Israel and the Palestinians. The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by a committee of the Norwegian Parliament.

Seems premature for the NY Times to make such an early call imo

An American newspaper would be very quick to attribute this to an Islamic group.

I'm not entirely sure that all the blame should be put onto him immediately, I'm sure he's not the only Nutjob in a country of 5m people.

Nothing's been confirmed yet. And even if it was Islamic terrorists, the religion of Islam was not attacking Norway, just some people who are Islamic.

I'm an atheist btw, so far from valiantly defending religions.

Yes, we have. A Jihadist group are claiming to have done it, and Al Qaeda have threatened to attack the West many times in the last year. It's pretty likely to be them, IMO. ofc, it might not be, but proof* would suggest it was.

    *Should have said 'evidence'

Reuters are reporting on how it is likely to be Al-Qaeda, Norwegian people are very peaceful and this is the first big news story from there since they won Eurosong in 2009, while the liberals would love blame Neo-Nazis it is obvious who done this, if a Mosque or Kebab shop was blown up yes it would look like White supremists but it has all the hallmarks of Islamic Al-Qaeda and their religious message of kill all the white people.

not trying to be crude but the bombing wasn't terribly efficient by al-Qaeda standards, and there appears to have been just one device

at this stage a single attacker seems to be likely

Tbh if the bombings and shootings are linked it would make the attack similiar in style to the Mumbai attacks a couple of years ago which would indicate Islamic terrorists. But it's still too early to tell for sure.

Proof hasn't been provided yet. Wouldn't recommend taking terrorists' word for it, even if they are claiming responsibility.

It could well be. This is just another horrible reminder to Europe and the world that Islamic terrorism isn't the only major terrorist threat. Neo-Nazi groups do seem to be quite interconnected internationally, so they could be well capable of planning such an attack.

If this was a neo-Nazi attack, it would mean that the European neo-Nazis are escalating their attacks. I mean I certainly can't remember neo-Nazi groups committing such terrorism in decades; I always thought that they were pathetic hill billy thugs who liked to go around and beat people up for no reason.

Even though there is no certainty it is very likely that it was some white supremacist group. The guy who went on the rampage on the island was Norwegian looking and very tall. As for the reasons behind this atrocity no clue.

reporter on Sky News claiming that a man in police uniform was seen acting suspiciously at Oslo site 2 minutes before explosion

I doubt it was a group, or a far-right group at least. More like one individual.

10 kids have been killed on the island according to Norwegian police

That could definitely be a possibility. The person could have easily planted a car-bomb in Oslo and then gone out to Utøya Island. I looked at google maps, Utøya Island seems to be only 25-30 km from Oslo. The person arrested on Utøya Island is being described on Skynews as a white, blond, blue-eyed man who was dressed in a police uniform. It's obvious that the Norwegian Labour Party and Norwegian Labour Youth were targeted, so this attack could well have been politically motivated.

That a suspect has been described as "nordic" looking doesn't rule anyone in or out. It could be locally grown right wing nutter or it could be a convert to radical Islam

Police have also confirmed that the man is not and was never a police man and they are working on the theory that he was seen near the bomb site in Oslo prior to the explosion.

They won't reveal any details about him at this time.
