I'm hearing that figure as the number of people shot, not killed. They're saying abot 5 killed but won't commit to a number yet.

LATEST: This eye-witness was assisting police by evacuating youths in his boat. Apparently, he could count 20-30 people shot dead. Awful.

I wonder did he plan on going in guns blazing or was he there to plant an explosive for the upcoming prime minister visit, I'm glad they've caught him alive aswell will be easier to investigate now.

Public transport in and out of Oslo has been halted, and there are car searches occurring on the roads to the airport.

I havent heard that, but I have to go to the airport now so I will soon find out!

    from guardian

7.11pm: The New York Times has more on the claim of responsibility by an Islamist group (thanks to Marta Hernandez Salvan for passing this on):

A terror group, Ansar al-Jihad al-Alami (the Helpers of the Global Jihad), issued a statement claiming responsibility for the attack, according to Will McCants, a terrorism analyst at CNA, a research institute that studies terrorism. The message said the attack was a response to Norwegian forces' presence in Afghanistan and to unspecified insults to the Prophet Muhammad. "We have warned since the Stockholm raid of more operations," the group said, apparently referred to a bombing in Sweden in December 2010, according to Mr McCants' translation. "What you see is only the beginning, and there is more to come." The claim could not be confirmed.

Could be the usual "wannabes" claiming of course.

The people on the island didn't stand much chance, lots of tents - easy targets.

oops, it was wrong it seems
Earlier reports that Oslo Airport had to be evacuated due to a bomb threat have been retracted.

Reports that Oslo Airport was under bomb threat have officially been denied. Stronger border control in effect though

    but:

BULLETIN: TV 2 is reporting that the Airport Express has been suspended due to a suspicious package. http://bit.ly/prdyyV

Sky making **** up AGAIN. Thats twice in 15 mins.
24 hour news has a lot to answer for

what you on about? they cant just make stuff up or it would be shut down. they can only report what they are told.

this is a big tragedy, they cant make this any worse than it is and all they have at the moment is unconfirmed reports...

i expect a big death toll here.

7.44pm: An eyewitness has told Norway's NRK broadcaster he saw more than 20 bodies at camp shooting.

Once again what starts out as bad but apparently with small numbers is heading for a grim tally.

That's actually very upsetting.Even though the bodies are blurred out, it just looks like such a sad isolated place to be trapped.

    @Absundum's tweet

It would be extremely possible if a mobile phone was used as the detonator.

or a timer, or just remote control, there seems to be a gap of a couple of hours between the bombing and shooting

    - There were several shooters on Utøya

A survivor of Utøya run the police in the face.
Survivors said that it was probably more people who were behind the attack on the young people of AUF-camp Friday night.

Witnesses who managed to get from the island alive, claiming that it was not just one but several assailants who shot wildly around on Utøya Friday night.

On his Facebook page also says Torbjorn Vereide, head of Sogn og Fjordane AUF, the same.

    - Archers dressed like police, so they wondered us to arrive before they started shooting us, he writes.

Other survivors believe that there must have been a number of perpetrators, as there are more people lifeless spread over a larger area.

NRK.no have not yet confirmed this information from the police.

In one way it'd be good if it were just one person, as they seem to have arrested him, and that's further threats from him contained.

But then it's also a bit of a shock to the system to know that one person can cause so much death and destruction in so little time.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,445 ✭✭✭Absurdum

that was more than just a car bomb, more like a truck or similar

It's so hard to know what to make of it. If it were one man I would be inclined to believe he was a lone rightwing extremist nutjob trying to kill the PM. But I don't see how one man could create so much carnage on the island when surely there would have been a few armed people there protecting politicans.

What reason would there have been to protect them? These weren't politicians they were just kids and young adults.

Ugh! This whole thing is just terrible. Why would they target the Norweigen Labour Youth? It's sickening. I used to be in the Irish Labour Youth (left because of political disagreements). I hope to Christ there wasn't anyone representing the Irish Labour Youth on Utoya Island.

Skynews is saying it could be some neo-Nazi group. It would make since because neo-Nazis usually target left leaning groups.

    It's all just so terrible.

    RIP to those who died.

One of the girls on the island was saying the shooting sounded like it was coming from different directions.... suggesting more than one shooter?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,514 ✭✭✭PseudoFamous

A few people may have drowned trying to escape the island
Former Guardian staffer Neil Perry, based in Oslo, is watching Norwegian television and tells me they are showing images taken from a helicopter showing people still swimming in the water off Utoya Island, presumably they threw themselves into the sea to get away from the gunman. An eyewitness has reported bodies of people who had been shot floating in the water.

Hard to tell, we generally suck at discerning where sounds are actually coming from. Just have to wait and see.
