Could you imagine the ribbing you would get from Meno if it did happen:p

Would you like an additional incentive on your own performance in Berlin for the sub 3 or would that put too much pressure on you to perform on race day:)

If that did happen i would make up an injury story or something like that to save face!

My bro is giving me 6/4 for an undisclosed amount, if you can match that or better it i'm all ears!

More than happy to combine it into a bet with your sub 3:10 attempt in Oct. €20 says i break 3 hrs and you don't break 3:10 and vice versa for you, you on?

6/4 you are having a laugh. I will take you up on the other offer though if i go for another marathon attempt this year. I have not booked anything yet as i want to see how the body recovers after next week.

Yeah thats fair enough, we'll wait on that bet until after your 2nd blowup of 2011 on English soil IMUK :)

Weds 20th July, Headed over to the club for an easy but hilly 10 miler in the heath. Lashing down from the outset and the park was covered with muddy puddles. I was tipping along nicely having a good chat when my right foot steps on a stick/branch hidden in a muddy puddle. This created a lever effect and had the other end of the stick pointing at an angle. The left foot then comes through and smacks the point of the stick bang on my metetarsal. This all happenned in less than a second and i stopped instantly in severe pain. Walked/limped back to the hospital (where our clubhouse is, how ironic) with pain shooting through the foot but nothing too worrying. Upon examining the foot there is a small very hard lump sticking up out of the bone that really does not feel like normal swelling.

Worrying times, tonight will tell a lot. Icing at the mo and we'll see how it is in the morning. Going to the doctor otherwise, its free over here anyway :)

I would say that i got the wrong end of the stick but i'm in too much pain for that now!

For what its worth, 3.5 mls at 9'10 pace (nice recovery if nothing else). My body has always been fairly resilient and I bet i'll be back on the road by Friday, fingers crossed.

Feck, sorry to hear that! :(

    Good to know :(

"Fractures to the Metatarsal bones can be caused by direct trauma, excessive rotational forces or overuse. During football, direct trauma is usually caused by a player accidentally kicking the sole of an opponent's boot"

"There is severe foot pain with a Metatarsal fracture and the patient will usually find it difficult to walk. Often there will be pain if the fracture site is touched"

This might be a stupid question but once the swelling goes down would it be possible to run on a broken metatarsal (assuming the worst). I can understand how you couldn't kick a ball but running might be ok if toe was supported etc. Not medical advice ;) but might be worth enquiring about

If it's broken, you'll know it's broken. You won't doubt it. Is there much swelling?

You might be going to that wedding after all. :p

It took Rooney about 3 weeks before he was running if i remember correctly, 3 weeks of no running = no berlin

I know what you mean. The swelling is similar to a third of a golf ball planted on my foot if that makes sense. I've never broken a bone before and i've had much worse ones than this before.

I'll go 5/1 it's broken :pAt least i can laugh about it

Fck the wedding i'm going to Berlin either way.

Hope its all ok in the morning Brian. If you can't run for a few days, cycle to keep the legs ticking over.

Hope things turn out ok. Resist the temptation to self diagnosis - we all tend to look for the worst case scenario. Good luck.

Even if you miss a small bit of training think positive. Sure didn't Derval miss a chunk of training in 2009 and yet came out and ran a national record and came 4th in the World Championships! There's some inspiration!

Speaking of World's, have you given up on the Daegu dream?

Yeah we do look for the worst case scenario i'll agree. Maybe i'll have the nerve removed from the foot and run through the pain barrier

Missing 3 or 4 days won't affect me at all, and thats all its likely to be i think. And yeah, after a protracted battle with myself I have given up on Daegu.

You can have the 3'45 pacing job too, its a package deal :)

Well cycling to work just there was a painful experience on the left pedal stroke, a bad sign for running on it. Still sore, swollen and i'm limping today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,991 ✭✭✭metamorphosis

    Crap.

Try to take your mind off it til Sat, it's amazing how fast it could turn around. Get a compression sock the foot or support.

Hopefully worst case scenario it's not.

Dont jump to any conclusions yet man, dont let your imagination run wild. The amount of times I've battered myself and thought I had done severe damage only to be running again 2 days later......... Get it checked then you'll know for sure. In the meantime keep calm.

Bad news on the metatarsal. Hope it heals up soon for you and the doctors diagnosis is good.

Is this a contender for the stupid injuries thread :D. Hope its nothing serious and you're back running soon

Ah crap, just reading your log now. Hope it's not serious. :(

Fri 22nd July, Nothing broken, just bruising is the report, which was expected. I should be back running in the next few days, hopefully Sunday.

Cycled down to the Regents Park outer circle and did 30 mins hard on the mountain bike on the outer circle. Did 7.95 miles (about 26km/h) and it was tough on the piece of sh*t that is my bike. Kept the effort level high throughout to mimic the tempo effort i was planning before the stick got me on Weds night. 20 mins core after, no pian in the foot.

I can now walk more or less without pain, but its too early yet to run on and its still quite painful to touch. I'm gonna try an easy one Sunday and if that goes ok i'll get back into it again from Monday. We'll call it a stepback week.

Sun 24th July. 4.25 miles easy in 35'16 (8'18) Foot seemed to have healed so chanced it. Ran down to my sisters/mothers hotel in Marble Arch via my old house and my old neighbours house (Amy Winehouse). Spent a few minutes celeb spotting and reading the tribute notes, which included a bottle of malibu, vodka and several cans of beer! She only lived .11 of a mile from me, I never knew. Sickening waste of talent, just like Wanjiru :(
No pain to report from the foot thankfully :)

Weekly Review, 24.75 miles and 4 runs. The whole year was under threat after the stick incident Weds but thankfully its clear. Pity i missed the tempo Friday evening though and its left me short of LT work in advance of my half in 3 weeks. The cycling seemed a good substitute i think.

    Yearly Mileage, 1046.75 miles

Mon 25th July, 6.5 mls easy (the usual Monday night run to Regents Pk) in 54 mins (8'50). Never felt good throughout, hopefully the 3 days off after the foot injury hasnt had an effect. Met my flatmate after in the heath and did 8 x 100m strides with her (she's going for 3'30 in DCM, may have had something to do with me moving in). 7 mls total.

20 mins core then afterwards. Hope to do this twice a week but good intentions and all that.

You're a gas man in one breath thanking the fact your year isn't over and in the next regretting missing one threshold run :)

Sometimes a brush with injury can be good. Makes you thankful that you can run and gets you out the door the days motivation is waning. I'm one with the running gods this evening and in philosophical form :)

In philosophical form maybe but not in sub 55:50 form for Frank Duffy ;)
