i will be contacting my hotel today regarding this but just one question:

My package is all inclusive for meal, some drinks, canapes on arrival etc, will i still be entitled to the vat decrease as i was never given an individual price on the food?

    Thanks

Just use common sense ie approx how much % was the alcohol and apply that to your cost per head, as being not subject to decrease.

You're 100% entitled to it on the food and canapes, so negotiate with the hotel on reaching and agreed reduction.

I dont want to be recognised in case my hotel is reading this(!) But Im curious what other people plan to do, ie, customers of hotels that arent passing it on

Will you accept it and just pay?
    Try to negotiate?
    Will/Have you complain(ed) to Hotel/IHF/Consumer association(?)
Would you accept the hotel's reasons but on the day settle the bill minus the extra VAT?
Would you consider moving your wedding to one of the 'good hotels' or elsewhere?

I just e-mailed our hotel stating that we're assuming they're passing on the reduction to us on all related costs, such as the accomodation.

I expecty they will as it won't affect their bottom line, all that changes is the amount of VAT they pass onto the Revenue.

If they didn't pass on the reduction they're effectively increasing their relevant prices by 4.5% which I'm not accepting.

thankfully someone else is in the same prediciment as me , i have paid and signed a std contract for a wedding in meath ---however the Hotel said --wait for it---due to costs increasing by 12% their prices will be going up ---however they also then said that due to vat decreasing by 5% thay will keep the wedding price the same ---they call it goodwill ---i call it DAYLIGHT ROBBERY i am fuming so sent a few angry emails demanding me 5%%%%

my hotel passed it on - send them the link to the IHF article.

their costs going up 12% is irrelevant as you have a contract at an agreed price.

the VAT change doesn't affect their bottom line.

No they're not due to higher costs etc. and no amount of negotiation or threats is changing their mind.

Our wedding is planned for there next year and we've already started looking elsewhere now due to them blanking us on this issue.

I emailed my co ordinator on thursday and shes yet to get back to me which is bad form imo.....

Thanks for the replys. I'm pretty shocked that the Maryborough are not passing it on. I thought they had a good reputation and would have wanted to maintain it.

The issue about increased costs is complete nonsense - inflation is the lowest its been in 20 years. And their prices went up from last year as well to account for inflation so that's complete rubbish.

Very greedy if you ask me.

Oh well we'll knock that hotel off the list and we'll keep looking.

I just signed our contract with Summerhill Hotel. We booked and paid our deposit before the VAT reduction but only just signed our contract. The VAT reduction was applied on the contract (to the food portion of the package cost), without us saying anything at all. Got a good amount off too so was quite pleased :)

I just noticed the first post again. Are bands supposed to be offering the lower rate of VAT too? (I don't live in Ireland so haven't a clue :)). I've booked our band and paid the deposit but haven't thought about the price going down due to VAT.

I see that the first post mentions cake as well but I haven't ordered ours yet so I don't need to worry about that one.

If your price per head is around €29 that would be correct by my calculations (I could be wrong).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 85 ✭✭bridetobeone

Our per head is 40 EURO! How do you work it out?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73 ✭✭the Lamb Post

Take your original cost and divide it by 113.5, then multiply it by 109.

But you have to remember that the reduction is not off drink, so if you have drink included in your package then you won't be receiving the full reduction.

    i.e. €40 divided by 113.5 = 0.35242
    then multiply by 109 = €38.41

Total reduction should be €1.59. But if there is drink in the package you'll find the hotel will round off and keep the 59c and pass on the €1.

I wrote to our hotel today, I basically added it as a query onto the end of a letter clarifying some of the terms & conditions.

I just mentioned the reduction, calculated the "new" rate per person and asked them to verify that my calculations were correct. Will report back with their reply.

    Hi,

Just letting you know that the Vat reduction was passed on to me on everything except for the wine which was included in our package.

Worked out at approx 3% saving overall.

but the VAT reduction might only apply to the food portion of your package - not to the whole cost.
