With certain sections of society, yes they are in general.

Of course not all Garda are like that.

    You mean "them".

There are so many of these incidents in the past couple of months, it's quite disturbing.

I'm not claiming anything as fact, just putting the question out there to get peoples opinions. I find these cases a little disturbing tbh.

TBH if the Gardaí are beating up people who are under 25 and have 25+ convictions to their resume, I say fair dues.

Don't let the salesman solicitor have a say 1st.

Its usually members of the skanger community that get a good ol'fashioned hiding, so meh. They dont jsut go around beating random people up.

    Us vs. them.

In whatever context, the thread will exist in AH

I reckon it's more likely due to heart attacks or the effects of alcohol poisoning in most cases like that.

They should not beat anyone up tbf.

Fair enough, but if we start accepting this sort of lawless behaviour from the gardai - what's to stop them beating up anyone in custody. I'm all for longer and more harsh sentences in the Irish justice system, it makes me sick reading about murder cases being downgraded to manslaughter, getting 8 years with 3 years suspended for good behaviour. It's complete bs, but this is a seperate issue altogether and not the answer to our crappy justice system.

Eh, even if these alleged "skangers" were killed in the purpose?

Personally, I don't see killing as "a good ol'fashioned hiding".

Do we really need another Garda bashing thread?

Its the Garda who are doing the bashing, thats the problem lol

My initial assumption when I read these things is that the prisoner was drunk/on drugs/in a state which led to them being brought in in the first place, not that the gardaí beat them.

That leads to the question of whether there should be a doctor available to review everyone who's brought into custody - extremely expensive, and not very practical in small town garda stations.

I live near there and the time and place of arrest suggests to me a homeless person or drug/alcohol addict.

I voted no though I've not studied every case

OP, you may have heard of Terence Wheelock.
From Summerhill Dublin, arrested for joyriding with his three comrades by a squad car as they fled from the stolen car. So he was seen in the act, caught red handed as the phrase goes
Also had two outstanding warrants out for him

Found in a coma in a cell in Store Street.
The coroner returned a verdict of suicide. The family dispute and it's been going back and forth. There was also issues of blood on his clothes but not his own blood and the family could not explain it

Bertie Ahern was lobbied but wouldn't back him, maybe he was right?
Joe Costelloe and the late Tony Gregory were happy to jump in and join marches

The lad was no saint for sure. But the family are convinced he did not commit suicide.

The likes of Indymedia would have you believe the gardaí had a role in his death.

Reason for my long post? It was a well known case and very contentious so if you've an interest in the area read a few stories over it.
It still isn't resolved and there are calls for an inquiry

Well you could do the logical thing and attempt to prove me wrong, that there's nothing suspicious about these cases.

Or take the easy option and attempt to have the thread closed.

    Your choice

There has never been anything close to a case of Gardai beating someone to death as far as I know.
Undoubtedly they will often give a few digs to the ribs or whatever of some cheeky bastard who they are arresting. they shouldn't but that's easy to say. I've spoken to cops who talked of being in the back of a Paddy wagon with a prisoner going into detail about how they would ride their sister/mother and then pick up on when their mother might be dead etc and then spit in their face. In such cases yeah, they'd get a good few digs in the body but sure who wouldn't
But humans are pretty strong, there's an enormous difference between that and being instrumental to someones demise by physical abuse

As Url has said, down to other reasons

No mention in the OP of the lad who died a couple of weeks ago in Dundalk a little while after being arrested.

Firstly, Indymedia is the greatest load of ****, you cannot get unbiased news there despite the name

Secondly, coroners are completely independent of the gardai and the judiciary. They are doctors bound by their oath who perform a full examination. Should there have been any evidence of abuse it would be in the report.

I'm not trying to close and there may indeed by wrongdoing in this case but I just think people overreact and overgeneralise sometimes when it comes to the Gardai and I hope this thread won't turn to that.

Yes. As with most of the 'pillars' of Irish society they've been abusing it's citizens in private for years and it's only now starting to come to light. This place would nearly need tore apart altogether and completely scrutinised/rebuilt.

Gawd, this regurgitated topic yet again for the umpteenth time.
What the hell happened to originality in this country? Christ!

You should have gotten into the Dáil and posted a ban on this specific type of topic.

Oh I know the kind of bias that goes on over on Indymedia

I'm just giving an example to the OP

In my opinion the gardaí, have no case to answer, they found him unconcious and rushed him to hospital
The idea that Terence had hanged himself is one which has been contested by his family. According to his brother Larry, Terence was a healthy, happy-go-lucky young man with no history of self-harm and for him to have committed suicide would have been entirely out of character. His family believe that Terence died as a result of injuries received from the gardaí while in custody

And this is nonsense from the family. People have committed suicide and people around them are shocked and never expected it.

The coroner made a verdict and that's fine by me.
Just it was a long and contentious case and a good example for the thread, that's all

I hope so too, that's not the intention anyway. I actually have a lot of respect for the gardai and the work they do given their resources. But if there's a few bad apples participating in a culture of illegally beating people up - they should be exposed, fired and never allowed work with the public again.
