Over half on housing list are foreign in Dublin

    MORE than half of the applicants for council homes in north Dublin are from abroad, new figures show.
    It is the first time that there have been more foreign than Irish people on Fingal's social housing list.
    "For the first time, more than half those on the waiting list for social housing in Fingal County Council are non-Irish nationals. A third are from outside the EU," Fine Gael's Kieran Dennison said.
    The figures were supplied in response to questions from Cllr Dennison.
    Lone parents on the list have risen by 28pc to 3,480, he said. This category of applicant now accounts for 43pc of people waiting for council homes.
    The number on Fingal's housing list is 8,144, up 22pc on the 6,691 on the list a year ago.

    These foreigners are dead right, Better than buying an overpriced house with a milestone over their neck for the 40 years.

    Not sure this is a reliable estimate. In Waterford (not sure about Dublin), applying for council housing is a condition of all rent allowance applications. Presumably this also includes short-term unemployed as well as usual long term dependents.

    To apply for rent allowance you have to join the housing list. There are thousands on the housing list who will never get a council house and know this.
    But they still get added so it's a headline grabbing statistics

    The real story here is the incredible waste on rent allowance, might be welfare for tenants but it's welfare for landlords too.
    Over €900 a month for a small family in Dublin. Couples have to compete with this
    Low paid workers looking for room shares and bedsits compete with people on rent allowance.

    It should be slashed and rent will adjust!

    I've been curous about this (as I fit the profile and will be looking for a room in Dublin soon). Are there any studies or stats examing the rental market at this level?

    Well, what do you expect. I am not surprised sure our government allows asylum seekers and romany gypsies in to the country; without meeting their needs such as education, training and employment so they can contribute to our society instead of depending on welfare. Many of them are not educated. Many of them would be eastern european/polish who came here to work and have settled here but lost their job and want to live here.

    Well, I would like to exclude people from Poland, they are from a different EU member state and they won't look for Asylum status ;)

    Well, let's not pretend the gypsies are crying out for education so that they can become doctors etc. - they are legally obliged to send their kids to school, but prefer to use them in begging and so forth instead. It's their culture, doncha know.

    Would the 50% on the housing list who are foreign in Dublin be native in Kildare, Cork or Galway?

    ??? Polish/Eastern Europeans tend to have degrees as a min standard of education. Far from uneducated.

    What is a foreigner these days?

    As far as I can tell, Ozzys,Americans,Brits,Canadians and South Africans etc are known in Ireland as... Ozzys,Americans,Brits,Canadians and South Africans etc!

    All other nations are foreigners. To an Irish person it seems, a French person is a foreigner, but a Canadian is not. It's a language thing I Believe.

    Also Eastern Europeans appear to be from a country called Eastern Europe, the official language is Eastern European. I think its somewhere between Germany and China.

    I think Arabs are from a country called United Arab Immigrant or something like that.

    Well I was talking about many of the asylum seekers and the romany gypsies. If most of the polish and eastern europeans here are educated then why are many are claiming welfare here? If i was educated to degree level and I came to a country to work ; if I was let go or lost my job, I would find another job and if I couldn't I would go to another country to look for work.

    They came here on the promise of jobs, they worked here untill they were laid off and now the ecomonys dried up, there are no jobs and they are claiming social welfare which as tax payers they are entitled to. I'm sure it's true of the vast majority of them.
