Just clicked on the lotto.ie website (mainly to find out why the Euromillions is capped at €185m - what's up with that?), and I noticed they've finally got with the internet age and you can now play online. So I filled out the registration, get to the end, only to find you have to print off a form and send them a copy of your passport or driver's licence before you can sign up! Which genius thought that one up? Apparently its so they can authenticate you're over 18. Really? Its funny how just about every lottery and gambling site in the world seems to manage without people running around sticking letters in the post.

The one that created the law stating you have to be over 18 to play the lotto

    Makes perfect sense.

Thought you could play if you were 16,or is that just UK?

I didnt have to send off documents in the post to register.I was able to do so in 10 mins through the national lottery website.

    :p

Sure tell me your numbers and Ill do them for you.

    Promise:pac:

If you must play ( :pac: ), you're better off doing it online at Paddy Power or the likes. E.g. pick three numbers, 250/1 (iirc).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,712 ✭✭✭YFlyer

Why bother playing. €185 million is only the most you can win.

Point is, if you're going to have to do that then why not just go down to the newsagent and play there?
It's like, the whole reason for playing online is for convenience, rules like this negate any benefit of playing online so the whole exercise becomes useless.

16 in the UK, and you don't need to do any of that postal crap to register. Unfortunately, I can't do the Euromillions on there any more because they only allow UK IP addresses (its because of all the Chinese lottery syndicates), which is why I thought it would be convienient to use lotto.ie. Fool that I was.

Well you have to be 18 to gamble too but you can set up an account on paddy power or betfair in about 5 minutes and bet instantly.

Other national lottery sites use national databases etc... so are going to be looking at your passport/ID in some form anyway. If our national lottery was doing that you'd have someone complaining about people accessing your information. Most other gambling sites couldn't give a toss because they are under no obligation to pay out anything.

They don't take debit on the site either.

I couldn't find any how to play guides either, that euromillions makes no sense.

    Eh, No it doesn't.

Paddy power, boylesports and plenty of other gambling sites dont require me to get off my arse and go post letters just so i can open an account. What's wrong with verifying a debit/credit card?

I haven't seen a website use a system like this in years! It's bollox.

Sure post the numbers you wouldve done up here so that we can all go through the experience together when they are drawn.

Can you imagine if they came up and your documents for registration were in the post?:pac:

    Doesn't make it acceptable.

Kids are using their parents credit cards to deposit, running up huge bills which in turn are then chargedback.

Lotto are going about it the right way.

    Yip.

You can join any number of sex sites right away, any number of independent gambling on-line organisations right away, join a great number of adult related stuff - but heaven forbid you wanted to do the Irish lotto! :pac:

The National Lottery is not established or run under the same laws and regulations as Paddy Power and the likes.

It probably should. What difference does it make if a 15 year old buys a ticket if they can't claim it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,139 ✭✭✭✭Mr. Manager

In fairness, all sites offering services to those 18+ should have screening processes like this in place.

Indeed. One is more modern (however argument over effectiveness) in procedural processing - the other, well thats a rarity in older slower processing.
...Thankfully one thats not adopted world-wide.

...And lets be honest, if a kid is going to steal a parents credit card, he/she is going to use it probably 99 times out of 100 in the use of accessing porn - not chasing after 6 Irish balls! :pac:

Perhaps because of it's connections to the State itself, they don't want the state/government to be seen as encouraging gambling by kids/teens.

They won't let you sign on with a Laser Card because those cards can issued to people under 18.

But if you have to send in ID why the ban on Laser Cards?
