Do you have any clear evidence that it was organised primarily by Youth Defence? If so, it would have been a deterrent for me to have attended. They were involved in an incident at my university earlier this year which I also didn't attend, but I know the type of behaviour that is associated with them

NUIM, amirite? NUIM myself, they caused a fuss in true Youth Defence style. The rally began with a mass at 1 PM, and just like last year most placards were branded (http://www.rallyforlife.net/RFL%202009%20Leaflet.pdf, Youth Defence placards)

Hilariously, the groups listed as supporting the demo (Like Coir and Youth Defence) share the same office! Coir is Youth Defence, Youth Defence is Coir, and so on.
However, I would call you out on Labour Youth / Socialist Party, as it is clear that the Socialist Workers Party were involved in the pro-choice element of the rally yesterday

Among others, I seen members of Ógra Shinn Féin, Labour Youth, The Socialist Party, the Workers Soldiarity Movement, the Socialist Workers Party, Choice Ireland, Residents Against Racism, Anti Fascist Action and other groups still there. Most groups have a polciy of not bringing banners/party placards to such events. I belong to the Workers Solidarity Movement and we did not bring our own banner. The SWP seemed to have held an info stall that morning and were asked to join t he protest, hence their branded placards.

We're more in agreement than not in relation to how manner is important in a free discussion on abortion

Yep, and thats a very important step. Youth Defence can not be given any space in this at all, their links to the far-right not just here but throughout Europe are actually worrying.

"Justin Barrett was an honorary guest at our event in Passau. I invited him. He sat with the delegates," said Mr Holger Apfel, the deputy leader of the NPD. "We have been in contact with his group since 1996. We are friendly with his Youth Defence organisation."

Right, just compare these two quotes though, your own and the extract from the poster. Couldn't people argue that Youth Defence were there amongst others? I'm probably being a bit pedantic here though.

People should engage in a proper discussion on the issue. Too many people on either side of the spectrum don't do this.

Here's some pictures from the event

    http://www.indymedia.ie/article/93038

In the picture half way down (guy holding "real life real choice" poster) the counter demonstrators appear to be offering johnnies to the marchers which shows a certain sense of humour I think.

Was having lunch in Buswells with a friend. Saw the rally in all it's Glory from the foyer.

There was about 500 people ranting about the non issue that is abortion. Equally there was some Anti Lisbon documents being passed around. However, it is clear that ther entire demonstration took in maybe 500 people in the "Pro Life Camp", and 100 in the "pro choice camp". This of course was trumped by the 4 Anti Fur freaks outside that shop on the top of Grafton Street, and the 15 pro palestine activists at the central ban

It highlights that in this time of economic uncertainty, the issue is irrelevant, and they are simply trying to keep the troops active. If they choose to head the Lisbon ii opposition campaign, the Yes camp will have a far easier time in terms of opposition.

There was no way any more then 500 were there. Plus the demograph was no this gaggle of young politicos. It was "young people" who would have been 18 at the time of the x-case. There were tons of Old People, many people who were ministers of particular religious orders, and foreigners. There is not nearly enough of a lobby to consider this march relevant. Most notibly the lack of media attention has shot it down as irrelevant.

I was at this protest on Saturday, it was about 100 pro-choice demonstrators on O'Connell St versus3000 pro-lifers and no, there were no nazi saluting. (Where do these rumours come from?). Just a bunch of religious people holding holy statues and rosary beads). The pro-choice movement was made up of Choice Ireland, SWP party and Lash Back. Thanks toeveryone who turned up.

3000? Is that a personal estimation? This is compared to one of 5000 by the previous poster.

    Pity I wasnt around.....

    Did anyone see this today?

I wasn't in town so I missed it, but apparently several thousand people were at it. And apparently a group of pro-choicers turned up, with a small number of them shouting threats and doing nazi-salutes.

I'm surprised the media didn't cover this; I'd say that like the rest of us they just want to let that sleeping dog lie.

What was weird was that apparently those marching were predominantly young, and not old grannys.

    Any eyewitnesses?

I saw a few going in and there loads of old grannies, the younger ones I saw seemed to be americans. I am pro choice but I don't have a problem with people who don't agree with this but I do find some of these pro lifers a bit much.

The problem isn't that it was a pro-life rally, it's that it was youth defense.

I would debate abortion with a pro-lifer, but I'd just tell a youth defenser to get out of my face. They're the abortion version of PETA or greenpeace.

just want to say I was at the pro-choice counter rally and saw no Nazi salutes from either side I don't know where that rumour came from - yeah some of the chants from both sides were insulting - incuding being called a Nazi by someone who thinks it's there place to tell others what to do with there body, unfortunatly the more right wing extremist of the christians don't seem to have a sense of irony
what was with all those kids being brought along - anyone else not sickened by the idea of people pushing there own sexual identity on pre-pubecent children?
also a note to the pro-lifers who took a few swings at me with there placards (though I doubt they have the brain cells to use a computer less read a forum of public opinion) PM me, I'd love to see how hard you are with out a Garda between us and a few hundered of your mates behind ya, I'll even let you keep the 2x4

the RTE website says both 2,000 attend protest under one of the pics and 5,000 attend rally in the main article

thats putting it mildly! They were noticably aggressive and skilled in the use of antagonists, it was scary to watch them in action

Meh. I have no reason to believe that the pro-choice counter protest wasn't equally antagonistic.

I think I can safely say that my previous posts on this thread apply equally to this situation.

Oh yeah, and this thread is about 2 years old.

by no means as aggressive or physical in terms of chants and slogans yeah it was equal

in terms of the age of the thread . . . http://bit.ly/mxnUtp
