Now in fairness, Andorid has taken over in the past few of weeks, but around a third of the smarthphone market is still Symbian, which is a massive percentage to just forget about. Remember, iOS is much much smaller than both Symbian and Android but they are both consistently forgotten about since iOS is the more fashionable OS.

A simple app, or better yet a decent mobile site is not that difficult to develop, and would benefit a lot of customers. Anyway, thats all off topic, just a related annoyance of mine.

I'll wait and see what UPC come up with as regards remote recording, it has the potential to be great!

Does anyone know if this upgrade will pave the way for interactive services?. I know that the red button works for Euronews at the moment, but what about the BBC and Sky channels which offer quiet a lot of additional services via the red button?

    cheers

Symbian phones are smartphones by the definition of what constitutes a smartphone. I do get what you mean (I think) but still, technically every Symbian phone is part of the smartphone market. And including all devices in service I fully believe it is the largest smartphone OS

But agreed, it would be foolish to develop a Symbian app, since it is as good as a legacy system: Nokia have no serious plans for its future so...

What annoys me more is the amount of companies lacking an Android application, since Android is currently the best-selling smartphone OS, yet RTÉ (for example), while they have twice as many iPhone apps.

the rte apps are available on android, have them installed on my phone

HTML5 for the win in my opinion. Unless the app needs access to the phone hardware like gpu, Bluetooth etc.. or offline functionality -.interoperability can be best provided with html5

Didn't you read what I said? When I referred specifically to RTÉ I said they had twice as many iPhone ones, not that they had none on Android

Thread is about UPC, not the merits or otherwise of mobile operating systems

Lost all my recordings after upgrade. All the recordings were actually showing up on My TV planner instead but nothing could be played.

Ah well - it was a chance to clear out the old stuff.

I got the letter today, saying that the upgrade is due to happen on 28th June and will allow NPC to introduce remote recording. Happy days, that'll be good to have when it comes in.

    It's literally:

    1) Put box in standby
    2) Wait 15 Minutes
    3) Turn box back on

Thought it was like something clearing stuff of and all.

Will something pop up telling me its done or it worked.

Is this going to effect all the boxes, because I never got a letter about it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 584 ✭✭✭neonman

Has anybody figured out how to tell if the upgrade was successful or not after 15 mins ?

I haven't noticed any difference at all other than my HD channels are in sh*t working order unwatchable at the moment.

My "upgrade" date was today. The only evidence that it happened was that my Favourite channel settings were gone and I had to set them again. I am waiting to see whether I really have to delete and add all my series recordings again.

You won't see any change on the box after the upgrade. The change is to allow remote recording which will will work via an iPhone app as well as hopefully a web interface and an android app (don't have an iPhone).

The note from UPC just said to recreate your series link and one off recording settings after the upgrade as they have changed the system so they would not work.

Its all speculation at the moment. Noting has been actually confirmed by UPC.
