Harold and Maude - brilliant black comedy from Hal Ashby. The film follows the relationship between a young man whose morbid hobbies include staging elaborate fake suicides, and an elderly woman with a fondness for grand theft auto. They meet at a funeral and sparks fly. It's pretty damn funny (love the harakiri scene) and well acted and directed. It's quirky sensibilities may annoy some, but hey it predates Wes Anderson by decades! And I never thought I'd say this but the Cat Stevens soundtrack works great.

    Awesome stuff.

Watched LA Confidential on Blu-ray last night. Really good film. The Rollo Tomasi plot device is genius! I also fell asleep before the extended epilogue that I hate so much.

What are the extras like on BR?

Watched Source Code just now. I cant believe this utter boIIox after the superb Moon from Duncan Jones. Am I the only one not getting this? Ratings seem very high.

I thought How to Train Your Dragon was brilliant. so didnt get the respect and fame it deserved.

Senna - Just brilliant. As I was very young when he was in his prime so the only experience I have of his racing was youtube videos and grainy videos, I really appreciated being able to see at least part of what made him great. My only criticisms are that 1. it unfairly portrays Prost as an arsehole and 2. it could have used more footage of his great races like Donington. Would love to see the extended version.

X-Men First Class - What could have been really. The 60's setting is fantastic the H.J cameo was inspired and for the most part, the cast were very good. Some scenes though were quite pointless, like the one where they're all sat around talking about what best to call themselves ?? All in all, a good idea that just wasn't done properly.

    Toy Story 1, 2, & 3.

These have been on in the house pretty much non stop since the baby got them for christmas and I think I can almost recite them by this point. I never got caught up with Toy Story on it's initial release, dunno why (maybe I thought I was too cool for it), and even now I still feel they are not Pixar's best work.

For me the first one stands out over the others. Yeah the animation is not that good with cars being particularly blocky but I think the comedy provided by the delusional Buzz is something missing in the sequels (although they attempt to repeat it in the second with the new Buzz action figure, and third with Spanish Buzz). And the developing relationship between Buzz and Woody is really enjoyable to watch. One thing I find strange about it though is how Playskool were happy to have Mr Potato Head portrayed as such a horrible character.

The second one doesn't really grip me although it is my girlfriends favourite, the story is ok but nothing about it really sticks out bar the Star Wars references, however the animation takes a giant leap forward.

I enjoy the third one although I do think that it got a lot more praise than it should. Maybe I expected more from Pixar and they seemed to be repeating old ideas with the friendly toy who turns out to be bad, and again they attempt to recapture the comedy of Buzz with the Spanish version. However the ending of the movie is touching and the climax actually makes you believe that the worst is going to happen. One thing about the movie really does annoy me
, during the escape Woody, Bullseye, and the 3 Aliens come across Big Baby who is sitting on the swing staring into the sky. They attempt to sneak past but one of the Aliens falls making a noise and this causes Big Baby to walk towards them. They duck down out of sight behind a path before Big Baby sees them. However as he walks towards them the camera cuts to his face before cutting back away to show Woody et al have disappeared and are hiding in a bucket yet Big Baby fails to see them moving.

Another thing that I really like about the 3 movies is the continuity displayed across all 3. Little things like the Pizza Planet van showing up across all 3 movies is a nice touch, as is Sid showing up in the third one.

Enjoyable films but I prefer The Incredible's and Finding Nemo.

Finally got around to watching Zatoichi, Good show, lags a bit in places but has one of the best endings in a film I've seen in ages. :) Must check out the rest of Kitano's stuff, previously only knew him as the teacher from Battle Royale.

Also saw A Fistful of Dynamite. Didn't really like the first third of the film, which was like an inferior copy of Leone's earlier stuff, but I was really impressed by the Revolution scenes as the film went on. James Coburn's Irish accent wasn't up to much though!:pac:

Most of Kitano's films are wee bundles of joy (except Takeshis, which is just sort of weird).

My favourite is Kikujiro: pretty much the complete opposite of his Yakuza films but heartwarmingly great. And his latest film Outrage is spectacular fun:

Shame it got totally ****ed over for an Irish cinema release though, was delighted to get to see it at the film festival a few months ago.

I really don't understand the love for TS3, I thought it was average. HTTYD on the other hand was simply fantastic.

Never actually noticed it in any of the other Pixar movies...gonna be on the lookout now. Another nice touch is Dinoco showing up in the first movie.

Hostel - I didn't like the start. Seemed like a boring road trip movie but when it actually got into the horror aspect it was actually quite enjoyable. I thought the whole area where
    the people were tortured looked
great and had a suitable atmosphere. Interesting idea too. The only thing that lets it down is the first half or so. 6/10 (Still worth watching though)

Morning Glory - Boring. Seriously boring. It goes on forever and goes nowhere interesting. 3/10

Paul - Disappointing is the only word I can think of. It isn't hilariously funny in my opinion but I did chuckle at most jokes. It's made to appeal to a wide audience (not that there's anything wrong with this) but so the potential for really great niche jokes is lost because of this. There is a great scene where they
enter a bar and a band are playing the music from the Mos Eisley cantina
    . It's enjoyable but not terrific. 6.5/10

Paul - terrible movie in comparison to hot fuzz or shaun of the dead didnt laugh at anything apart from the
star wars reference in the bar

Watched Kung Fu Panda 2, while it was good and had some fantastic visuals it just didn't wow me like the 1st film. The fighting (while the style was broad) didn't capture the same "woah!" moments like the 1st one did. The 1st film had far more of the extended one-shot scenes of fighting which are always a marvel to watch.
Oldman was brilliant in it but his character was just sort of.............killed pretty quickly when the big one-on-one fight had really just started.

Still, was an enjoyable movie thankfully mainly free of pop culture references and obligitary romance. But
what an easy paycheck for Hoffman
    :pac:

Paul - I thought this was a very good comedy. Shaun of the Dead duo team up again in a road trip\science fiction\comedy. I think they hit the nail on the head casting Seth Rogen as the alien's voice

The Adjustment Bureau - Interesting film that ask how far would you go to be with the person you loved. Its nearly more of a love story than it is a thriller...not that I minded.

Kill The Irishman - I really enjoyed this, great true-story crime film about athe 60s\70s in a US city being run by the Mafia and an Irish fella climbing the ladder and basically annoying the **** out of them.

Under Suspicion - Two great actors, Morgan Freeman and Gene Hackman star in this thriller about a lawyer under suspicion for murdering some young girls. The two play off each other excellently and there is a little twist at the end for good measure

Aliens: Thought it was absolutely dire. Having seen Alien a few weeks back (in Screen also) this was such a let down.

If that was your first time ever seeing it then clearly your opinion doesn't matter. :D
