we are staying in the hotel until our honeymoon so I would rather do it after rather than ruin the wedding buzz. we'll still have people around the day after as well and any confrontation then could ruin that too

why bother. when your paying off your bill the following day just point blank refuse to pay the bill until they correctly adjust it.

Let them take you to court not the other way around.

That's exactly what i plan on doing.

as D3PO said, feck that - let them chase you. tell them you'll settle the entire wedding and accomodation bill on checkout.

then refuse to pay the balance owing until they issue you with a correct VAT invoice, if they won't then refuse to pay anything.

if they threaten to charge your credit card anyway just tell them good luck explaining that to your credit card charge-back department who when you query the charge will expect a signed docket or PIN from your hotel. Which they won't have.

we have yet to contact our hotel. the wedding is the end of july. this approach looks good. how did you go?

My query is with the revenue department apparently. Not really expecting a response.

The reduction is worth approx €300 to me so its definately worth following up on.

    Hi Guys,

We are in the same boat. We are getting married in october and have signed our contract and paid deposits already. I was thinking of just querying the Vat amount the day after the wedding when settling the bill.

Now, heres the thing. I am just reading through our contract here and it doesnt actually mention the amount of VAT charged. In all the correspondence between ourselves and the hotel about the prices, it was always just ''€xx.95 per head inclusive'', but never mentioned ''including VAT''.

They have been brilliant so far and again, have offered us a ''great deal''. Im just wondering if they'll try say the price was excluding VAT if I query it.

    Anyone have an opinion?

I'd imagine that they'd be on shaky ground if they tried to claim that the price given excluded VAT. Surely they'd have to be explicit about that rather than misleading you by not giving the entire price.

Quotes to a consumer include VAT unless it's explicitly states ex VAT.
    So you're correct

I emailed our wedding coordinator who replied and said she would have to clarify the situation with head office and to give her a few days. I presumed this was going to lead to a no but a few days later I got an email with a revised contract at the new VAT rate. Essentially for us it's 5 euro off per person so it's a great reduction, delighted now :pac:

hi all, just noticed this now as i'm not a regular visitor over on this forum.
i'm getting married on the 2nd july so just get in, however i've paid no deposit yet, does this mean that i'm entitled to the vat rate of 9% or 13%.
i'm meeting with hotel on wednesday to iron down price, not great at haggling so would like to get my thoughts formed before i go in.
is there anyone on here in the same situation?
    thanks

Our wedding is taking place on the 8th of July and over 50% of the cost has been paid in deposits up to now. Can I take it they would have made a 13.5% VAT return already on these amounts paid and therefore they would be unable to pass on the reduction to me or would the service not have to be provided first before any returns are made thus the 9% could be applicable to the full amount?

I am due to pay another deposit this week as per the terms of Sale of the agreement I signed but I will doing my best to hold off as I reckon the 9% will definately be applicable to any payment made after July 1st.........All quotes were inclusive of VAT..

Having our reception at a restaurant and were due to make payment for food this week. They said they'd pass on the reduction to us even though it's not July yet.

From what I understand Dinger 77, you probably wouldn't get the reduction on what you actually paid (beyond a gesture of good will that is). Possibly on the due payments though...especially if they're billing for drink and stuff separately on the day. No harm asking them anyway.

irrelevant of deposits - from a VAT point of view your wedding is after 1 July so the reduced rate applies to 100% of the bill.

the hotel doens't pay over the VAT on your deposit, they only pay it over when they raise the invoice in July, which will be at the reduced rate.

My hotel has said that they will be passing on the VAT reduction, but that it will only apply to food. Does that sound right?

My hotel said the same. Basically all alcoholic sales still have a 21% VAT rate applicable to them hence why they say the reduction will only relate to food. You should however get a reduction in the accomodation if they agreed a set price with you per room...

    Vat on leisure activities reduced

    STEVEN CARROLL

The vat rate on restaurants, hotels, cinemas, newspapers and tourism-related activities falls from 13.5 per cent to 9 per cent from today.
A number of organisations representing businesses affected by the reduction – which also applies to theatres, hairdressers and golf clubs – said they expected their members would pass on the savings to consumers.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny said he expected businesses to reduce their prices in line with the reduction. “The industry had better understand that this is a situation where they must pass these reductions on to the customer,” he said.

Minister for Enterprise Richard Bruton said he would keep an eye on the impact the reduced rate had on sales and job-generation in the tourism sector.

The agency urged consumers to check if the prices they were paying for goods had been reduced. The reduction was one of the initiatives included in the Government’s jobs stimulus plan, which was announced in May. The rate will remain in effect until December 2012 and will be reviewed for the 2013 budget. There is no obligation on the industries to pass on the savings.

Adrian Cummins, of the Restaurant Association of Ireland, welcomed the development and said the organisation had instructed its members to pass on savings. “This is the first step in the road to recovery and we will continue to advocate for the abolition of joint labour committees and Sunday premium payments,” he said.

Mr Cummins said the savings would equate to a €1 reduction on a €25 meal in a restaurant. Fast food chain McDonald’s, which has 78 outlets in Ireland, said the price of products such as a Big Mac meal would fall by 25 cent from today

Tim Fenn, chief executive of the Irish Hotels Federation, said its members had also been asked to pass on the savings and said the organisation is pleased tourism is at the centre of Government plans for growth and recovery.

Frank Cullen, of the National Newspapers of Ireland, said the organisation had campaigned to have the rate reduced as the tax on newspapers was among the highest in the EU. The recommended retail price of The Irish Times will decrease to €1.85 on weekdays and to €2.15 on Saturdays.

The cost of making a call or sending a text message while overseas is to fall again from today. Roaming charges are to come down from 39 cent to 35 cent per minute (ex-Vat) for calls made while abroad and from 15 cent to 11 cent per minute for calls received. Receiving a voicemail message while abroad will be free.

Of course there's no strict obligation in terms of pricing. A company sets it's price then adds vat at 9% instead of 13.5%. I'm sure quite a few will take some or all of the reduction to increase their margin without dropping their prices.

More important here is the matter of pre-agreed contracts including VAT at 13.5% that will now be subject to VAT at 9% at the time they are paid. The issue here is that these customers should really be paying a lower price due to the decreased VAT whereas some hotels will try to hang onto this extra money. What the hotels do with new customers who don't have these customers is a matter for pricing and market forces.

Met up with our co-ordinator today,

Basically thier not passing on the rate to us, our wedding is in 2 weeks time.

She told us that it not getting passed on because other rates for likes of cleaning material and products etc are going up in rate of some crap like that so this cancels out the vat rate we could save on.

Is this crap or what? This cant be right, i think their having us on. Does anyone have any ideas how to help me get this sorted with hotel cause were meeting up june 9th to sort out final bill

Will the final bill be settled when you check out the morning after?

Then just recalculate the bill yourself and pay the rate with the lower VAT.
What are they going to do? They won't take you to court and if they did a judge won't look kindly on it and the hotel would get in the local paper

She told us that it not getting passed on because other rates for likes of cleaning material and products etc are going up in rate of some crap like that

Sounds like BS, ask them for a link from the revenue commissioners site so you can check this yourself

    Absolute BS.
You agreed a price inclusive of VAT at 13.5%, VAT has now reduced to 9%, the price paid to the hotel stays the same. There is no way you should pay the extra money.

Work out the new price per head and offer to pay that amount on checkout from the hotel.
(Divide your total expected bill by 113.5 and multiply by 109 to get the new reduced bill)

Nope, the new lower rate is only applicable to hospitality items such as food & hotel rooms. (Not including booze unfortunately)

Bands, DJs, photographers VAT rates remain the same.

My fiancé rang our wedding coordinator yesterday and was told they are not passing on reduction as "it was a specially arranged package deal" when we booked in February. She seemed very embarrassed at this&stressed that she was merely carrying out orders. She told us to send in an email of complaint to the GM of the hotel.I am livid!Unfortunately these greedy b***tards are not legally obliged to pass on this reduction so I don't know what to do now,I'm very tempted to deduct 4.5% myself when paying the final bill on the Sunday after our wedding and just walking away.Anyone else in same situation?

    Hi All,

Best of luck to everybody trying to work this out at the moment...

Can somebody confirm I understand this correctly:

Venue + catering booked pre July and deposit paid (therefore contract accepted by both parties)

Balance not due until after wedding in August

Hence VAT invoice has not been processed so all services and goods with the reduced rate must be reduced (due to fixed contractual price) and the deposit already paid should be taken at reduced rate as invoice has not been presented (processed by accounts etc)
Deposit liable to 13.5% as per guidance from Revenue!!
Thanking you for post and info to date everybody :-)
