So does this mean that Ireland is the only country on the planet where no-one gets a tip?

    No
loads of people get tips but too many expect a tip for basic and sub par service:mad:

Anyone ever tip the pilots on a plane if they get you there on time?
I try to but I always get tackled to the ground on my way to the cockpit before I can even get my wallet out of my pocket.

Only if the service is top notch (and only in America, not in Ireland), otherwise the back of me feckin' hand you'll get!

What's the logic here? American staff deserve tips, Irish staff don't?

No, I haven't "ate" in every restaurant in Ireland. No idea about the Poles, I can only speak for countries that I have eaten in and from that experience, I get my coffee refilled faster, I get more than a grudging welcome and smile and overall the experience is ten times more pleasant.

you rate restaurants on how fast your coffee is refilled...?..and restaurants abroad are ten times more pleasant.....?.....

In most american states min wage is about 7-8 $, however, if you are in a business which could earn tips Ie. bar staff/resturants/ etc then your min wage is reduced by anywhere between 40-60%

Worked in a bar once in Montauk and a friend worked in a restaurant there for no wage just tips and did damn well out of it too! $600-$800 a week.

In New York City a barman can earn up to $1500 a week on tips, depending on the bar of course. In Ireland you always get a wage so it is different.

Not sure how that's an answer. American staff earn good money from tips, therefore Irish staff shouldn't be tipped (as the two previous posters suggested)?

No, I believe staff in restaurants should be tipped, once the service is good

Thanks, but I was asking the two posters whose policy was that they tip in America, not in Ireland and addressing it again to the third poster who offered their experience as and answer to the question, but didn't explain how it was an answer.

One thing I hate about American tipping is tipping the barman $1 every time they open a beer and hand it to you, this is not tipworthy service. You're better to open a tab and then tip at the end if you're going to be there a while thats what I did.

although I did tip a barmaid $20 once as we were at the bar for hours and she remembered every drink we had every time, plus she gave us free shots and rode the rodeo bull in the bar while pouring tequila into one of the lads mouths as it was his birthday.

    she earned it :D

Its simple enough if you think about it.

If you dont tip American workers they potentially dont eat.

If you dont tip Irish workers they still have a good wage.

Sure they could both make a killing but only one has the potential to not make a living.

i tip in america if the service is good.

in ireland i don't bother. that being said though if a meal came to like 23.45 i'd leave 24 as it's only a few measly cent.

I work in a restaurant and I've never expected to be tipped, yes it's a nice addition to my bank account but we're not a tipping culture so I genuinely don't expect every customer too. That said, like others have said if I think a server in a restaurant went above and beyond I'll leave a generous tip but I'll usually leave a couple of euro.

I never tip (I'm never in the states) because I can't afford to. If I moved somewhere where I had to tip I'd work out a percentage in my head and stick to it, or round the price to the nearest ten and give change as tip.

I never tip but sometimes i feel that i should tip the takeaway delivery guy. I really don't know how they get paid but i've a feeling they mainly rely on tips?

What the fcuk would you tip someone in Ireland for, you're already being ripped off

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 83 ✭✭username2010

Surprised at the non-tippers on here!!...

I would generally tip 10% in Ireland.....I deduct if the service is bad, and I add if the service is particularly good....

(Unless service is included in the bill...)

America - tipping is practically mandatory even down to what percentage you are supposed to give. You are expected to do it and they have a tipping culture.

Ireland - we do not have a tipping culture and are not expected to do it. Its a bit stupid to pay extra for a service that the staff are paid to do.

Would you tip the driver of a bus or the woman at the checkout in Tescos for doing a good job?

I,m open to correction here, but I can,t see anyone tipping a bus driver or checkout operator in America either....
