serious thread: tipping in places

im wondering do people always tip in cafes, taxis etc? i always tip between 10 and 20 percent of the bill and feel that maybe i could save money if i didnt have to. so does everybody tip? is it rude not to?

I tend to tip unless mega unhappy with the service or food, or if the prices were off the wall! Also hate the obligatory service charge, I'm happy enough to tip for a job well done but feel a bit miffed that that nicety is demanded on top of a big bill instead of politely hoped for

Quick calculation tells me that you would save 10 to 20 percent by not tipping.

As a rule I tip for good service, anything less they can fcuk off. Take some pride in your job and respect your customer isn't alot to ask.

10 - 20 % percent is boom time tips! Grade the service on a level from 1-10 and give that percent-ish

Table for six please, pay standard price plus service charge

The restaurant business, where you give more business and you get charged extra.
Most any other business you'd get a discount.

I tip in resturants because it's the norm, but I don't like doing it. I'm of the opinion that the price quoted is what I should pay, the staff get paid a wage if they think they deserve more get another job.
I don't accept this "uh we don't get payed much we relie on tips". That might work in other countries but there are plenty of people on the same wage that don't get tips just be happy your in a proffesion that has the possibility of earning a bit extra on the side every so often. It shouldn't be expected.

Deliverymen get whatever change is to the nearest fiver, cause they never carry change and I'm not arsed rooting around for coin.

Other than that I'll rarely tip, in Ireland at least. Our minimum wage is more than sufficient to live on.

In other countries, like America, I'll tip, because they work a damn sight harder than waitresses etc in Ireland but make less.

How do you know waitresses in "other countries" work a damn sight harder....? have you ate in every restaurant in Ireland..? do Polish waitresses work harder at home or here ? Is there a "rate my service" table for staff in restaurants etc....a lot of people use America as the standard for a comment about tipping..I,ve been there a few times and the service is more or less the same as here..

No, I haven't "ate" in every restaurant in Ireland. No idea about the Poles, I can only speak for countries that I have eaten in and from that experience, I get my coffee refilled faster, I get more than a grudging welcome and smile and overall the experience is ten times more pleasant.

If I was out for a big meal in a restaurant and got good service, I'd leave a bit of change as a tip, wouldn't be working out percentages though!
I do tip delivery drivers though for some reason.

you rate restaurants on how fast your coffee is refilled...?..and restaurants abroad are ten times more pleasant.....?.....

In most american states min wage is about 7-8 $, however, if you are in a business which could earn tips Ie. bar staff/resturants/ etc then your min wage is reduced by anywhere between 40-60%

Worked in a bar once in Montauk and a friend worked in a restaurant there for no wage just tips and did damn well out of it too! $600-$800 a week.

In New York City a barman can earn up to $1500 a week on tips, depending on the bar of course. In Ireland you always get a wage so it is different.

Not sure how that's an answer. American staff earn good money from tips, therefore Irish staff shouldn't be tipped (as the two previous posters suggested)?

No, I believe staff in restaurants should be tipped, once the service is good

One thing I hate about American tipping is tipping the barman $1 every time they open a beer and hand it to you, this is not tipworthy service. You're better to open a tab and then tip at the end if you're going to be there a while thats what I did.

although I did tip a barmaid $20 once as we were at the bar for hours and she remembered every drink we had every time, plus she gave us free shots and rode the rodeo bull in the bar while pouring tequila into one of the lads mouths as it was his birthday.

Its simple enough if you think about it.

If you dont tip American workers they potentially dont eat.

If you dont tip Irish workers they still have a good wage.

Sure they could both make a killing but only one has the potential to not make a living.
