Tonight's RTE Frontline on #aras11 - Micheal D Higgins, Fergus Finlay, Kathleen O'Meara & Mary Davis on the panel http://t.co/iKRz1Se

Strange they're doing it tonight when they knew Norris wouldn't be available. Not the only one missing anyway.

I read in the National Inquirer that Oprah was doing an outside broadcast in Waterford.:D

A few valid points brought up by Sex Abuse Campaigner Christine Buckley in the Mail OnLine. Reading further down, he seems to say that he has had a fair bit of contact with O Searcaigh and not just a quick "bump into" in Wicklow St. Perhaps this is why he has said that he would not be answering anymore questions on the subject. Mature recollection and all that!

Why defend this abuser, Senator? Film-maker who exposed Cathal Ó Searcaigh as a sex tourist asks David Norris to stand up for the boys who were hurt

article-2002661-0C85116D00000578-187_233x494.jpg Mr Norris has defended sex tourist Cathal Ó Searcaigh

The film-maker who exposed Cathal Ó Searcaigh as a predatory sex tourist has condemned Senator David Norris for attacking her film while publicly supporting the disgraced poet.
Neasa Ní Chianáin, whose RTÉ film Fairytale Of Kathmandu showed Ó Searcaigh lavishing charity cash on young Nepalese men with whom he was having sex, asked why presidential hopeful Mr Norris was ‘protecting a man who clearly abused his power’.
And she dismissed the senator’s claims that he merely wanted ‘natural justice’ for Ó Searcaigh by saying: ‘Where is the natural justice for the boys? Where is the natural justice for those most vulnerable in the film?’Miss Ní Chianáin said she believed that Mr Norris had defended Ó Searcaigh simply because the poet was homosexual, adding: ‘Just because Ó Searcaigh is a gay man, it doesn’t give him the right to abuse his position and power and to prey on vulnerable boys.’
The criticism of Mr Norris follows the stinging rebuke issued last week by sex abuse victim and campaigner Christine Buckley, who said that the presidential hopeful’s views on paedophilia and sex abuse were ‘disturbing’.
She dismissed Mr Norris’s 2002 remark that there was ‘a lot of nonsense being talked about paedophilia’, saying bluntly: ‘There’s no nonsense about paedophiles – they’re monsters.’

Sounds like The Mail has found another person to exploit then for their own ends.
We can only hope Christine Buckley kops onto the antics and real agenda of the rag.

So back on thread I wont be voting for Norris. He is a egotist and brings nothing to the position. Didnt you do quite a lot of GOOD WORK with The Daily Mail in raising the issue of The Childrens hospital.

O' and as for "He is a egotist and brings nothing to the position."
Have you seen the shower of **** on the RTE TV last night that were so full of crap, it was unreal?
NONE of them were presidential material.

No didnt see it. But the position should be dissolved. The Presidents role is to protect the constitution. So either appoint a constitutional lawyer or dissolve it. What good does the position serve.

Well that matter was tried to be raised but it was stopped in its tracks by Pat.
The man couldn't run a piss up in a brewery. The show was dire last night.

I'm a great admirer of David Norris and have no doubt at all that he would do a fine job as President. So would Michael D, for that matter. I've met both of them and enjoyed their company.

If the role is just that of a ambasador. Why not get Martin Sheen to run. He holdsery proud of his Irish passport and as we have all seen very presidential, or Gabrial Byrne or someone. How about the guy that played James Bond

The problem is that the the councils that get to nonimate any few independent candidates they can, are mostly FG, Labour or FF members - so the last thing they are going to do is shoot themselves (their party) in the foot by selecting a possible winner (like Norris who is still very high in the polls) from independents, if they can help it.

Its all about wanting to get their party person in. Party prestige etc...

    I didnt think of that.

No, that's the Senate elections that they get votes in.

Not actually the universities, but graduates of Trinity and NUI. I voted in the last Seanad election and was happy the fellow I voted for - John Crown - got a seat. He promised to give his entire salary towards a new cancer unit at St. Vincents. That, and his outside-the-box views on the Irish political system, is why I voted for him. :)

Its a small but important point to remember when thinking about how the selection process is too tightly tied up to whom ever the parties just want to be allowed to run!
There has been many calls to change the system - and have been shot down (I wonder why! ).
Even when the topic was brought up on The Frontline this week, Pat (known FF supporter) silenced the audience member down that tried to raise the topic.

The majority of Irish people would like to see David Norris as the next President, according to a new opinion poll.

The Sunday Independent/Quantum Research Opinion Poll of 500 people, shows that 30% of those surveyed would like to see Mr Norris become the country's next President.

In joint second place is Fine Gael's new member, Pat Cox, and Labour's Fergus Finlay, with 13% of the vote each.

While not a certainly, not to be nominated, it looks like he's already having problems getting the further nod to run.
    Good!

Indeed. His launch where he was talking about "humility" was funny though, credit where credit is due.

Michael D secured the Labour nomination

Poor Kathleen O'Meara, lost three general elections in a row and defeated once again. But she has a future and she'll try again some day
I realise a lot of you never heard of her

Michael D Higgins will represent Labour in the forthcoming Presidential Election.

The Labour Party President won the party's nomination at a parliamentary party meeting in Dublin this afternoon.

He saw off competition from Barnardos chief Fergus Finlay and former Tipperary North County Councillor Kathleen O'Meara.

Addressing the congregation this afternoon, Labour Leader and Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore said the presidential election campaign will not be between the parties, it will be a campaign between the candidates and it will be for the people.

    Eamon Gilmore is talking schite.
He and everyone else in his party know who controls the councils that might nominate any other extreme lucky to be selected candidates.

It will be for the people - if other candidates are allowed even to get that far!
