Thousands are expected to attend this year's Dublin Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender & Queer Pride Festival, which is kicking off today.

The festival, which will run for the next 10 days, is one of the largest nationwide, with more than 50 events being held.

"Dublin LGBTQ Pride Festival 2011 is the most ambitious to date with an expanded programme and a focus on diverse events that will appeal to people from all communities,” said Jo McNamara, Dublin LGBTQ Pride Festival chairperson.

"€2.8m was generated for the city from the 2010 Festival.

"This year we have also seen the engagement of big brands including Google Android and 98FM as sponsors and Carroll’s Gifts & Souvenirs, who are creating special Dublin Pride Festival merchandise.

"This demonstrates the positive evolution of Pride since its humble beginnings in 1983 and the advances that have even occurred this year with Civil Partnership, openly gay people elected to the Dáil and the Equality Tribunal’s landmark decision in relation

It must some reverse psychology ploy. If we call ourselves Queer, people think we don't mind it, then it won't be used against us in a derogatory sense.

I should have been a psychologist. My talents are wasted

Nah, there's been a reclamation of the word in the LGBT community. It's still offensive to use it to insult though.

Queer is an acceptable term among the ghay community just as the word n******r is acceptable among the dhuine gorm community. :p

Kinda like black people calling each other the 'n' word but, if you're not black and say it, it's definitely not okay.

Does it have some alternate meaning to "gay," though? Because if this festival gets one word longer every year people are going to lose interest.

I saw this last night..that LGBT was being called LGBTQ now and had to look it up to verify the Q meant queer. Fair play to them reclaimuing the word and turning it on its head an all that, but if they wanna add a letter for every word thats slang for gay the acronym is gonna lose its catchiness!

Can we have a hetero, white, male pride festival? I'm guessing no.

I can get away with saying n1gga. It's pretty much only white people that can't get away with using it.

I've a gay mate and he said not all gays are queers.

    Gorm is blue :p
    Did you mean dubh?

That's the Irish for a black person - duine gorm.

No... those stars don't add up to the "n" word.

I'm still working on that post.

    Ah, I stand corrected :o

I was translating it word for word and not the phrase

The same happened with the term "gay" didn't it ? That turned out to be pretty successful !

Daoine Gorm is the Irish term for coloured people.

If there are enough letters in it perhaps they can unscramble a word from it

    LGBTQ...Hmmm *scratches head*

Yeah but are they gonna add to it for every slang word? For arguments sake 'creamer' 'fag' 'fairy'... already after three we have LGBTQFCF...might as well just bash my keyboard for a few minutes and call it an acronym for lesbian gay bi and transgender.

You are free to organise one.
Not sure many would join your Hetro-white supremacist-sausage-fest rally though.

I'm not suggesting we all turn gay for the weekend, but if you like to party this is the weekend to do it.

Gay Pride is a brilliant weekend in Dublin, love it.

Well it'll need a "U" to go with the "Q", so next year they'll have to invite people making up their minds, the Unsure.

In a rainbow sort of way.

I'm all for inclusivity but the length of the festival title is getting out of control.

By 2015, all the posters will have to be in landscape format.

By Rainbow, presumably you're alluding to a Bear and a pink Hippo.

Yeah, and that's another thing! I resent those people using that word. That's our word for making fun of them! We need it!! Well I'm taking back our word, and I'm taking back my son!
