Anybody have any idea what odds Rory was to lead after day 1?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,216 ✭✭✭aster99

Paddypower are offering odds of 3/10 on the field vs McIlroy. That seems like easy money as Rory will fall away as usual. There is no evidence to suggest otherwise.

How do you mean as usual? It happened once in a big major, maybe in couple small tournaments.

You're like the American commentators, the way they go on about rorys final round in Augusta you'd think he had done it a dozen times. I'd reckon everyone else is more worried about it than McIlroy himself

Happened once eh? Then I guess the British Open last year doesn't count? Or what about the tournament in Malaysia one week after The Masters where he had supposedly bounced back? The Masters was played on an easier course than Congressional and he still couldn't hold it together. One hole on this course can wipe out a 3 shot lead very quickly.

Does anyone think Rory McIlroy could break Jack Nicklaus's record once he gets one?

One amazing stat last night was that Nicklaus played 146 consecutive majors (Did I get that right!?!). That's 36 years not missing a single one?

Nice of you to make a return to the Golf Forum... we love broken records around here (and I'm not talking about record # of majors won).

Rory hit 17 of 18 greens in regulation.

    freakish.

the one green he did miss he sunk a 15 footer for par!

plus he was out in the afternoon groups on drying greens.

    just nuts.

today tho... that course is going show its claws. dryer & firmer. a round of par today should see him keep the lead.

16/1 or thereabouts as far as I can recall. I was tempted but didn't back it in the end.

I am confident McIlroy will win multiple majors (once he gets over the hurdle of winning the first one) but to even think about him getting anywhere near 18 is the stuff of fantasy. Far too much competition around, even in comparison to when Tiger won the majority of his to think that anyone will dominate in the same fashion again.

Fantastic display of precision power golf by Rory McIlroy yesterday. :)

I lost count of the number of times he outdrove Dustin Johnson and not only that was more accurate aswell !

I was delighted for him and just hope that he can maintain his form for the next three rounds.

He deserves every good thing that comes his way this weekend.

(One a another note I have to say I hope this thread doesn't get visited by the muppets that took over on the last day of the Masters...people who knew nothing at all about golf coming on to have a pop at Rory..).

McIlroy only around the 5/2 mark this morning, very poor odds with 54 holes left in U.S Open.

Rory putted very well which left him down so badly on the last 18 at Augusta, long long way to go yet though. Solid round needed today, hes off at 12.55 Irish time.

Over 20 rounds under par yesterday which is pretty high for the US Open, USGA wont like that....expect some fiendish pin positions from here on in!:pac:

Yeah sure hes being doing it for what 21 years now

Yesterdays round was one of the top 5 rounds of golf I have ever seen and even eclipsed Rory's own Quaill Hollow(sp?) round, the aftermath of Augusta, playing in the marquee threesome and comming out and hitting 17 of 18 GIR in a US Open is quite frankly epic.

    But begrudgers will begrudge

I don't see how you consider the event in Malaysia 'falling away'. He was one behind Manassero going into the last round and Manassero played a great round and won. Not exactly a Rory collapse, is it?

I dont count British open as it wasn't a final day collapse.

Also in my opinion he did bounce back the week after masters. To go to malaysia and be in contention in less than 7 days was a perfect bounce back in my eyes

Not only that, he almost turned around a 4 shot deficit on the back 9 - only coming up short on the last when he went for the green in 2.

His progress is excellent though - he shot 80 on day 2 of the Open last year after leading, he shot 80 on day 4 of the Masters this year with a big lead. Hopefully his 80 happens on day 6 this time round. :p

His major form is simply immense. When push comes to shove, on the long, hard courses, nobody can stay with him - what a swing.

Mate ring me a few minutes ago to make arrangements for tee time this evening.

    Conversation proceeds

    - "Did you see any of the golf this morning"
    - "What you on about ?"
    - "Yeah it on already"
    - " Oh right ?"
    - "McIlroy after making a **** of it he's back to 1 under"
    - "Thought he is not out until later, jesus the course must be set up unreal hard if thats case"
    - " I'm gutted anyway, nearly started crying when I saw his score. He looks positive though, he has a birdie putt now. COMON RORY! na he missed it he gone, he's gone"

What an idiot looking at the repeat of yesterdays round.

dont think its been said but fair deuce to Robert Rock shooting 1 under at his first US Open with no practice round and only getting to Congressional on Wednesday night i think. Riding the crest of a wave at the moment i think after last weekends win.

Maybe a Lowry v Rock showdown again :)

First birdie of the day = 4 shot lead. Not bad!

    He's a shoe in. I'm going down now to bet a £100.

Early doors it looks like McIlroy is one under today continuing where he left off. Keeping it nice and steady.

    Others:

Robert Rock at level par after 2 (good man:))

Mickelson and Stricker moving in the right direction(-2 today)

Garcia level par after 5 also.

-8 after 24 holes round congressional in a US Open, wow this is phenomonal, if he keeps this up he can have hes 80 on Day 4 and still walk it.
