great performance from lowry today. Had a feeling he might do that. Hopefully that will give him the confidence to break par tomorrow although it will probably be a tougher day tomorrow

Rory just made the 4th look like a little short Par 4, it's 470 yards and he hit a sand wedge for his second shot to about 5 foot!

McIlroy is doing what he did at the Masters for first 3 rounds. In front by a few but could be a lot further in front. Hopefully he takes advantage of the 2 par 5's coming up.

I hope he has learned his lesson from Augusta

What did he hit in from 255 yds? 4 iron?

I think we might as well just sit back and enjoy this lads. If Mcilroy never wins a major or even another golf tournament he is without a doubt going to be regarded as one of the best ball strikers of all time. It's impeccable. Better than .. dare I mention some names.

It's just awesome I could watch him hit balls all day. :)

no idea - missed the eagle but made the birdie. Butch Harmon is well impressed.

If MclRoy can improve his putting he could dominate.

When Rory wins his first major, look out world and forget about Tiger!

I actually think once he gets over the barrier of winning the first one a few more could follow quickly

Does anyone think Rory McIlroy could break Jack Nicklaus's record once he gets one?

I personally not sure any players could ever get near the amount of major trophies won by Nicklaus and Tiger anymore. I Think Nicklaus and Tiger were way ahead of their time in class.

I think in the modern era the game has changed alot. I think it has become a world game first of all. There will be an explosion of golfing talent in developing golfing nations very soon. In ten years time I could see Asian golfers having success like they do in the womens game. Winning everything

I think The main tour in terms of resources : Better management/sponsorship/ physical training coaches /mind coachs, technoligical analysis tools etc will bring out the best in the best talent available and will even out the field alot. You won't see many modern golfers smoking cigarettes down the 18th thats for sure!

I would have said no to this but.....

In his last 4 majors, Rory has now had the lead at some stage during the tournament (was tied for the lead briefly during the final round of the PGA). If he keeps putting himself in position like that for most majors and he learns how to finish them off he could easily get into 2 figures of majors during his career. Unlikely to get over 18 but anything is possible with Rory's swing :p

He could do it very easily.

Just caught up with Sky+. Brilliant Rory made his playing partners look ordinary.

3 rounds to go but I hope he keeps his putting together.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,147 ✭✭✭Morrisseeee

Such a joy to watch him play that way last nite, he has such natural ability. Even his putting was effortless. I hope he can go on now and keep it together for the next 3 days. His biggest competitor will be himself, ie. when he has an off day, that he can 'grind' it out when he's in trouble.
Whether he can go on and win as many Majors as Nicklaus/Woods, I don't think so, simply because he's not that motivated, ie. like Tiger was(is), I don't think he's hell bent on achieving that record, he hasn't set that goal (in his head) yet !! I hope he wins one in the next few years, otherwise it might be a heavy burden to bear, and he could be next Jimmy White (of snooker)!! It's such a fine line between winning your 1st Major & not winning one at all, just ask Harrington/Garcia/Montgomery/Westwood etc.

Paddypower are offering odds of 3/10 on the field vs McIlroy. That seems like easy money as Rory will fall away as usual. There is no evidence to suggest otherwise.
