Weaver or Picatinny For a Fine Hunting Rifle?

I must admit that for some rifles, I am a pure traditionalist. I love the wood stock rubbed with oil, not clear coated, nice bluing - case coloring preferred, a leather sling, and all.

I just cannot bring myself to appreciate the look of a Picatinny rail on a fine hunting rifle. It's just too militaristic for my tastes. Seems too tactical and not aesthetic at all.

Perhaps, on a tactical derivation of a hunting rifle, I would not mind.

Whatever about the looks of the Picatinny, they sit too high for my liking. Weavers sit nice and low. My dilemna is liking the height of the Weavers and the surface area of the XTR rings.

So what say ye for a hunting rifle: Picatinny, Weaver, Sako/Tikka, other, or who cares?

What mounting system would you use on a fine hunting rifle? 14 votes

Didnt have an option for both!:D TBH both have their advantages and drawbacks.Weaver are nice for a classic rifle all right, and look 100% stronger. But you are then stuck with just that ,and if it cant be put on a weaver system, tough!.Picitinnys are agreed ugly ,but their versatility beats their ugliness.Proably somone will invent a picitinny that will match the reciver of a bespoke gun soon.EG build one with engraving to match the rest of the gun.

I went for Picatinny. More versatile than Weaver, and Optilock systems, and to be honest i'm not as traditional as yourself. If it works i'll use pretty much anything irrespective of looks, etc.

My Father would be very similar to yourself. His 30-06 rifle was bought before he even knew the caliber. He simply liked the look, style and feel of the Sauer. My latest hunting rifle has a composite stock, picatinny rail and looks as "authentic" as an iPod in a western.:D

    Other

My Ruger 77/22 has the best mounting system I have used.
Straight to the reciever and strong as anything I've seen.

On poor systems, what is the story with the 3/8 dovetail on the CZ?? Who decided that was a good idea? I Like that it's straight to the receiver, I don't like that it's the wrong damn size

I thought cz 452's have an 11mm rail except for the ones made for america while the centre fires have a 16mm rail

I like the optiloks on my sako so far except the screws on the rings are soft enough so you want to be careful with them, the only reason i'd bother with the extra weight of a rail is if i was planning on switching scopes
