It might be worth adding that for Irish citizens resident outside Ireland that they should continue to subscribe to Sky Ireland for access to the basic Irish TV channels if they live within the footprint of Astra 2D.

Saorview and Saorsat will not be available.

    Indeed.

Freeview released a press release last week stating Freeview is not available in China.

RTÉ 1 +1 and RTÉjr really need to be launched officially with it, could no journalist asked the question when are they going to begin? I will assume Monday.

When I think about it more RTÉ 2 +1 would have been a better option, even if RTÉ had got RTÉ Plus phase 1 of RTÉ NN and RTÉ PLUS were too alike during phase 1.

Site seems to be down. :( Well it seems to be going slower than usual.

Free to air digital television now available via SAORVIEW

“SAORVIEW will secure the future of Irish free-to-air television in the digital age”

    - Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Mr. Pat Rabbitte T.D.

Thursday May 26th: Ireland’s new free-to-air digital television service SAORVIEW was launched today by the Minister for Communications Energy and Natural Resources.

SAORVIEW is now available to 97% of Irish households and carries eight Irish channels: RTÉ One, RTÉ Two HD, TV3, TG4, RTÉ News Now, 3e, RTÉjr and RTÉ One + 1. SAORVIEW will also carry a new enhanced digital RTÉ Aertel information service and all of RTÉ’s radio services.

“SAORVIEW will secure the future of Irish free-to-air television in the digital age”, said Minister Rabbitte.

“We are delighted to be able to offer such a high quality service free to Irish viewers”, said Mary Curtis, Director of Digital Switchover, RTÉ. “After the initial purchase of a set top box or a new integrated digital television (iDTV) there is no subscription and no ongoing cost.”

The new service will replace the old analogue television service – the signal received through an aerial – which will be switched off throughout Europe by the end of 2012. Of the 1.6 million TV households in Ireland almost 600,000 (37%) receive some television services through an aerial (either for their primary television or other televisions). Just over 335,000 (21%) Irish TV households currently depend entirely on the analogue service. These homes will lose their Irish television services at the end of 2012 unless they switch to another form of TV reception.

“My aim is to ensure that there is a free television service available to all Irish viewers after analogue switch off in 2012. When combined with other pay or free platforms SAORVIEW will offer a wide choice of TV channels to viewers, and the choice of channels available on SAORVIEW will grow further in 2012. A precise date in 2012 for analogue switch off will be announced later this summer”, said Minister Rabbitte.

SAORVIEW offers a number of new enhanced services. It introduces free High Definition (HD) television broadcasting to Irish television for the first time. This weekend RTÉ Two HD will broadcast the Magners League Final between Munster and Leinster and the Munster Hurling Championship quarter final between Cork and Tipperary in HD.

“Even with normal standard definition (SD) pictures and sound, viewers will notice a marked improvement with SAORVIEW”, said Mary Curtis. “HD television will transform viewers’ experience of sporting events, a point which will be clear to those watching RTÉ Two in HD this weekend. HD provides exceptionally clear, sharp pictures with vivid colours and up to five times more detail than SD.”

As well as attracting those who must find a new means of receiving television signals by the end of 2012, SAORVIEW is expected to appeal to other television viewers seeking non-subscription digital television for either second rooms and/or second homes.

During 2010, the channels planned for SAORVIEW broadcast all of the 100 most watched TV programmes in Ireland. Combined, the existing TV channels planned for SAORVIEW captured an average daily share (Individuals 4+ All Day) of close to 50% (48.73) during 2010.

Retailers and television installers are offering consumers a range of options by which they can receive SAORVIEW. SAORVIEW can be combined with other free or Pay TV services (be they terrestrial, cable or satellite) to receive a broader range of channels and services.

RTE is investing €70 million in the infrastructure needed to allow Ireland make the transition from analogue to digital television. Ireland moving to digital will free up spectrum for use by other important communications services such as broadband, mobile TV or other communications services. The Government has estimated that the Irish economy will benefit by up to €500 million over the next decade as a result of the switch to digital television.

Consumers can obtain more information at www.saorview.ie, or Lo Call 1890 222 012 or Aertel page 650.

    TOO MANY QUESTIONS

    I like this one
12.6 Why Isn't, At Least Part Of, The €500 Million That The Government Is Getting For Digital Dividend Used To Help People With The Costs?

The €500 million mentioned (question 3.1), is a Government's estimated value of the benefits of the Digital Dividend to the economy over a ten year period. This is based on new services creating new jobs, using Irish facilities and services and paying taxes

Perhaps the government could estimate the cost minus the cost to help people make the switch

I noticed in the last few days TV3 are carrying the Tommy & PJ Saorview ads. I wonder if RTÉ are paying for them or is it part of the carriage agreement with RTÉNL?

An official Saorview information booklet came through the letterbox the other day (PJ and Tommy all over it) - it's was simple enough just to explain what the service is and a little about ASO. Must have been an official one because it was 50% as Gaeilge.

Two copies of the booklet arrived with the TV licence renewal notice.

It's a condensed bilingual version of the English and Irish PDFs on the website.

The next big public Saorview event is the National Ploughing Championship in Sept.
    Upcoming Events

20th September- 22nd September 2011- National Ploughing Championship, Athy, Co. Kildare

    More details to follow

    http://www.saorview.ie/trade-login/upcoming-events/

Recently The Irish Farmers Journal, Country Living supplement dedicated 4/5 pages to Saorview. The article included general information on Saorview, a list of registered installers and their price range for installation, Saorview receiver, aerial realignment etc.

It's not surprising that there'll be a big rural focus on providing Saorview and switchover information, the B&A report said vast majority of analogue homes are located in rural areas across the country.

Saorview press release today about it stand at the 2011 National Ploughing Championship - Stand Number: 260: Row J: Block 3
SAORVIEW at 2011 National Ploughing Championship

Come visit SAORVIEW at this year’s National Ploughing Championship @ Stand Number: 260: Row J: Block 3

SAORVIEW is Ireland’s free digital television service. Digital TV offers many advantages over analogue including: access to more channels, high definition (HD) pictures and sound, on-screen programme guides and new interactive services. It replaces the old analogue service which must be switched off by the end of 2012. The SAORVIEW team will be at the National Ploughing Championships to answer all your questions and demonstrate the service.

Over 600,000 Irish households receive TV through an aerial on at least one television in their home and of these, over 300,000 households receive TV exclusively through an aerial. This type of TV reception (known as analogue terrestrial TV), will be switched off in October 2012 as part of an EU requirement to move to digital. Our research shows that 70% of analogue households are based in rural areas and that many people don’t understand that making the switch is necessary..

SAORVIEW at the National Ploughing Championships 2011 will offer a full, interactive experience for visitors. After a visit to the SAORVIEW marquee, visitors will have learned:

Who will be affected by the switch-off of analogue television.

    • The benefits of SAORVIEW (compared to the old system) which include High Definition pictures, interactive TV listings and RTÉ Aertel Digital as well as new channels including RTÉjr and RTÉ News Now.
    • How easy it is to make the switch and how help others to make the switch. We will have a demo zone showing people exactly how to plug in a set-top-box and tune in the services.

Having learned all about SAORVIEW, every person who visits the SAORVIEW marquee will be eligible to enter a draw to win one of 3 top-spec SAORVIEW Approved iDTVs from quality manufacturers such as Sony, Samsung, Phillips and LG.

There will also be an opportunity for kids to get their photos taken with their faces on Tommy and PJs’ (our brand ambassadors) bodies, so don’t forget to bring your cameras!

The SAORVIEW marquee will be located right beside the RTÉ presence and we will have lots of surprise visitors from all our broadcast partners.

Popped into the Saorview tent at the Ploughing Championships today, it appeared to be quiet busy throughout the day.

They had a few Saorview approved TVs and STBS on display showing the Saorview channels. The Saorview coverage checker was available on 2 PCs. There were a number of Saorview staff around to answer general and technical questions including Mary Curtis.

She said there should be a number of Saorview PVRs on the shelves by Christmas and were pushing manufacturers to make them available, also a certified combi STB.

There is a competition to win 3 iDTVs daily for the 3 days of the event.

The downside was the complete lack of Saorview literature, no information booklets available in the Saorview tent. However, if you purchased the RTÉ Guide and red RTÉ Guide shoulder bag for €1 in the RTÉ tent next door it included the small Saorview information booklet. The same booklet is also available from Saorview approved retailers.

I think it's come up before, but did you tell them to get RTE radio to mention "On Saorview" when they're plugging the platforms? Very irritating that they don't mention it!

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 20,374 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sam Russell

Perhaps they might also plug the RTE News Now. It is mentioned as 'being on line' but no mention of 'being on Saorview - the new digital TV service'.

    Same goes for RTE Jr.

On a simillar point, why do they not show films or some such on RTE 2 HD while the RTE Jr programmes are on RTE 2 (SD)? We have now got two kids channels during the day (3 if you include TG4).

RTÉ should promo their other channels. They should clearly state the saorview channel that they are on.

After ASO they should remove RTÉjr from RTÉ Two but hold off until then, however during the Irish Matches at the WC they should have removed RTÉjr from RTÉ Two.

My main issue regarding RTEjr is that it's not on at the weekend. Especially as the bandwidth isn't being used for anything else. Not sure whether that was a BAI decision or RTE never looked for it.

I know it's hard to think of everything, but was there any mention of series link ? Any PVR's without series link provided by Saorview, will be practically useless.

RTÉjr in it initial phase was not going to air at the weekends, 2012 phase 2 will start airing at weekends, remember RTÉ1+1 was supposed to be phase one of RTÉ PLUS. (They could put RTÉ 1 +1 out for 12 hours at the weekend during phase 1).

Series link is handy but not totally necessary.

Handy ? It's vital. The days of manually having to set record times on repeating programmes like the soaps etc are long gone.

Still not available on films, would be handy for them, soaps, you turn your tv on and you press record okay not as handy as series link but it might improve your memory :)
