Maybe she doesn't want to cause her son any further embarrassment? Maybe he begged her not to press charges?

Unfortunate. Being a likely story that the boy himself didn't want to press charges, I think it's funny (not haha funny) that it's also another gender stereotype placed by society that men have to be strong and emotionless and not let something like this bother them. Hmmm.

Charges should be pressed ffs. Disgracful stuff.

It's not ridiculous, many of the early comments were far different from the type of comments that there would have been had the thread title have been an accurate one.

People are not rational, that is the point and the premise of the thread is to highlight that and show how there can be double standards in situations like this.

You're missing the point with respect. If the sexes were switched here, you would STILL know nothing of the incident and so that is why I put that question to you.

Star, had this thread have been about three guys stripping an 11 year old girl naked and filming it as they laughed, I can guarantee you, there would have been a hell of a lot more Joe Duffy esque posts than you are seeing now. The lads balls would have hacked off by the first couple of posts for one and by the time we got to the tenth, we would have detailed descriptions of just what would happen to them, had they done that to their daughter or sister.

I see your point now. You are probably quite right in that some people still hold such absurdly ridiculous double standards when it comes to cases of sexual assault.

I'm just a bit annoyed that this thread - which purports to be discussion about double standards in relation to sexual assault - really isn't done any justice when the premise of the original post is based around something that may or may not have happened as the OP portrays it.

That's insane that the mother isn't pressing charges! Has a reason been given? Surely it's not to save him embarrassment seeing as it's all over the internet!

If I was that mother I'd be doing everything in my power to make sure those girls get some serious punishments and are all expelled from school! This behaviour is not acceptable - no matter what gender the victim is!

I concede that point totally :)

Which was the main reason I chose my words carefully when I said hope that the girls get whatever punishment that lads would had they done similar (whatever that turns out to be). You could very well be right, there may be more to this than meets the eye, just that when it's girls that are the perpetrators and boys the victims society seems to be more forgiving for whatever reason and the Joe Duffy mob far less vitriolic than when it's a male on female crime.

This thread being one of the worst examples (not your post though) ;)

I would be outraged no matter the genders involved, I wish those girls would be punished under court of law (however the OP is wrong about the CV thing, in America most criminal reccords of minors are wiped clean once they turn 18).
However, hateful posts about 'femnazis' are utterly non-sequiter. Feminist do not encourage girls to pin down and strip boys, that is ridiculous and quite the strawman (this is the the correct use of the word strawman).

    Fair enough.

You know what would be funny?
If we got to see a video of that time 3 girls kicked the crap out of you while your friends stood by and laughed.

You felt great about that, didn't you?

Ahh, sure it's only AH. Nobody minds that 3 chicks beat the crap out of you, do they?
They'll laugh at you, but you're not in school any more, so all is well.

    Issues!

Sorry, but you're missing the point that those users who made those comments, are trying to make. Their point is not that they believe "feminazis" want or encourage something like this to happen, it is that "feminazis" tend to be far more vocal when the victims of such crimes are females rather than males.

I see what you mean and that is a good point, (but you could also say that mens rights groups never speak out when women are the victims of these crimes). What I'm trying to say is that the demonisation of feminism is petty and often latched on to stories like this to make a 'point'. Its brought on by the insecurity of people feeling that if one gender achieves rights, the other must therefore suffer.
I'm a feminist (well more of an 'equalist'), and this story shocks and disgusts me.

Battle lines are drawn here that have been drawn before...
While I appreciate that the debate is a potentially interesting one there is a whiff of agenda at play here which does not sit well, particularly when recently posted links are taken into consideration.
What has the potential to be a genuine debate in the general case is now tainted by the specifics of the origins of this thread. I don't wish to censor the topic however I think in this case it may be best to end this now.
