Guys I have a bet with a friend about comma usage! Yes yes not the most interesting topic BUT there is alcohol involved for the winner, woohoo!

So, which are the correct sentences:

Happy birthday, Peter.
or
Happy birthday Peter.

Good evening, Peter.
or
Good evening Peter.

So whats the correct usage? With or without the comma? And can anyone gie a link the the proper rule?

Both are wrong. Birthday should have a capital b.

I'm nearly sure there should be a comma in both instances since they directly address a person.

You only put that up so we'd read the whole thing didn't you:D I couldn't see on that where there was information on whether a comma was appropriate in this case or not.

Does it not depend on whether you are Peter or not?

If I'm saying Happy Birthday to Peter, I wouldn't use a comma: Happy Birthday Peter.

If I'm Peter though, saying it to someone else, I would use a comma. Happy Birthday, Peter - with the comma being shorthand for 'from'.
