Guys I have a bet with a friend about comma usage! Yes yes not the most interesting topic BUT there is alcohol involved for the winner, woohoo!

So, which are the correct sentences:

    Happy birthday, Peter.
    or
    Happy birthday Peter.

    Good evening, Peter.
    or
    Good evening Peter.

So whats the correct usage? With or without the comma? And can anyone gie a link the the proper rule?

    Thanks incredibly wise AH people!

Only put the comma in if you think Peter will turn around a thump ya if you mention his name.

Both are wrong. Birthday should have a capital b.

I'm nearly sure there should be a comma in both instances since they directly address a person.

This is what happens when you forget to use a comma in a situation like this:

You only put that up so we'd read the whole thing didn't you:D I couldn't see on that where there was information on whether a comma was appropriate in this case or not.

Does it not depend on whether you are Peter or not?

If I'm saying Happy Birthday to Peter, I wouldn't use a comma: Happy Birthday Peter.

If I'm Peter though, saying it to someone else, I would use a comma. Happy Birthday, Peter - with the comma being shorthand for 'from'.

Any chance of a lift to the party, please? My car is off the road.
    Cheers!

Only a week ago, there was a new scandel about the Chinese and pipelines and stuff. My class were really pissed off and spent about 20 minutes explaining the history of why they feel that way.
I always thought there was none but all the books I use to teach English have it..

You teach English in Vietnam. We get it already.

Yanks tend to use commas too much. As in 'thank you, ma'am. Irrelevant I know.

If the author of each sentence isn't the person who is being named then no commas are needed.

    I don't know how I know this - I just do.
