    He's not really that camp.

    I was there.

About 4.40 into his speech I got bored and walked out in a huff.

It's a cynical world we live in, but don't underestimate how much communications like that mean to people in his position.

I'd like to think so! I do genuinely like and admire the guy :)

It's really wrong for any grown man to have sex with an underage teenage boy whether that be Ancient Greece or modern day.

Shouldn't we vote in somebody like Gerry Daly? He could plant his own trees.

Jesus Christ, who is saying otherwise? This thread is now full of trolls somehow linking homosexuality with paedophilia. I can't believe in 2011 it needs to be pointed out that they are two entirely different things. What happened in ancient Greece is just that - ANCIENT and not accepted today. Seriously, where did all this come from?

Did you throw your arms up in that air and say "over" in a really camp voice?

You went to see Senator Norris speak, so I'm assuming that you're gay.
I'm gay too because I watched that clip for about 30 seconds.
Anyone who watches that clip is gay.

Not camp gay though. We're a bit past it now, but current and future school kids will be shown that clip in order to make them gay.
Then they'll be shown the Graham Norton one and told that this is how normal people act, and that they should do the same.

Then they will be informed that both Norris and Norton are Protestant, and that everyone should be Protestant.

It's the gay and protestant agenda all rolled into one.
Norris will be succeeded as president by Ian Paisley Jr. and we'll all bow down to the queen.
    Not Lizzie. The Norton chap.

Im not linking the two. I dont think it was acceptable in Ancient Greece either. If I was transported in a time machine back there, I wouldnt start endorsing it. It is wrong now just as it was wrong then.

Aaah yes.Another homosexual man pushed upon the public, but at least this one can be voted away if he manages to drag his already doomed campaign that far

Good for you, R - don't be afraid to send emails or letters, to anyone, ever - once they know it's not the green crayon brigade timewasters, they are always delighted.

I am delighted with meself. I would imagine someone typed it up, but a friend of mine knows him quiet well as she works with a disabilities rights groups and he's involved with them, and she he always replies to stuff himself.

David Norris must be going though alot of personal anguish.

Any thread about Norris has the following reasons not to vote for him:
    • Ireland will join the Commonwealth - He clearly said only if the majority of the irish wanted to.
    • 1916 rebels are terrorists - He never even said that
    • He condones pedophilia - He said he was taken completely out of context and he's completely against paedophilia.

Fair enough if you don't want to vote for him, but just don't hide behind any of the above reasons. You may just think he's a prick or you just don't like him. They're more valid reasons than the above.

You missed that he is "in favour of incest" - source, Magill journalist on Joe Duffy's Liveline.

Okay...but that is like me posting simply to say "I think murder is wrong"...everyone agrees!

On a side note, David said that when he was a teenager he would have wanted an older man to show him the ropes or something. I think there is a context here in that first David grew up without a father figure(if he was straight there might be advice there on 'women'), he grew up gay (and thus could not talk to anyone about his sexuality given that it was illegal until 1993). heck if I think back to when I was 15/16 I would have loved to have been with an older woman! So I don't think that comment, in itself, is controversial/weird. Obviously, it is up to the adult (man or woman) to *never* have sex with someone who is underage though!

The age of consent laws are there for a good reason (a teenager can never truly make an informed decision about sex with someone older and the threat for exploitation there is too great), however, and I would therefore disagree with his view that they should be consent based rather than age based.

What people aren't reporting enough is that even in the original Magill article David made it very clear that he could never understand how an adult would want to have sex with a minor and that he himself felt it was very wrong. The whole controversy seems to stem from the fact that he made the vague statement that there was 'something to be said' for what went on in ancient Greece. Apparently on Pat Kenny he said that he meant 'pederasty' rather than 'paedophilia' but what is the difference?

As a follow on, Michael D apart, just have a look at the others.

    Urgh.

And that's another aspect of the Burke/Norris thing that has been overlooked.

Won't go into it in detail now, but he was speaking as a legislator on the consent/age thing on an issue with which his colleagues agreed. It was most definitely misinterpreted and taken way out of context in the original interview - and for me that is enough to cast doubt on every single aspect of the other stuff.

Here's what others have said, in a nutshell:

    Negative view: none whatsoever

Positive view: In its classical form, the former can be non-sexual, and more like a mentor-like role.

Shallow summary, but if you can do better please do.

Are we allowed to vote? If not what's the point of this thread? Anyway I don't think the international community would understand his accent similar to Cheryl Cole. I mean we tried Jedward and that failed.

8th out of 43 Eurovision contenders is a failure?

You have high standards, sir....and why not.

A Gay Irish West Brit President born in the Belgian Congo, who is sexually attracted to underage boys ? Sounds perfect for the new Ireland all right.

If you're over 18 and an Irish citizen then yes, you're allowed to vote......

And you have to be resident in Ireland.

Norris has campaigned to include the diaspora, but at the moment it's just us island-folk.

If homosexuality is genetic then why doesn't nature allow gay couples to naturally pass their gay genes down to the next generation?

And why hasn't natural selection acted against it?
    RachaelVO wrote: »
OK, here we go, in genetics there are always two types of genes for each and every characteristic, including your gender. One is recessive and one is dominent. ...

And it can get even more complicated with environmental factors influencing gene expression, e.g. http://www.thetech.org/genetics/ask.php?id=47

Natural selection acting against homosexuality is an interesting question. I don't believe it's purely biological, but..

I suspect the reason that the potential for it is maintained in a species, is that the alternative - very strictly biologically enforced gender roles - goes through the point of diminishing returns after a while.

For example, there may be selection pressure in an environment to ensure that over 90% of the population is hetero, however, I think that trying to have a genome that guarantees 99.9% heterosexuality perhaps simply requires too many additional biological structures, checks, compromises and energy expenditure that it's just not worth the effort to add it in, so to speak.

Simple enough question. Would you/ will you vote for David Norris to be President?

    No chance.

Enough wrong with this country already.

Electing him would be like the time they sent Dustin to the Eurovision.

    Waste of time.

He's a relentless self-publisicing windbag who mainly persues issues concerning his sexual orientation.

In his mind it's quite alright if a child has 2 mummies or 2 daddies etc. & he will do anything to see that this type of thing is seen as normal in this country regardless of the welfare of any children involved.

    No thanks!

I've highlited the bits that are either untrue or make no difference to his ability to do a job as president. Congratulations on the display of ignorance

Oh Christ! Alright! You look gorgeous until frozen. Some streaks and a little more slap and you're there ;) AND get rid of the Aer Lingus coat.
