Right time to get the excuses in early! Got soaked after work yesterday in the torrential rain, thought nothing of it. Until this morning of course when I feel like sh!t. Still gonna fly this evening but the race tomorrow is looking dodgy. I'll still head down, warm up etc, but its not looking good at the mo. It feels similar to the one i had at new years and that lasted 3/4 days, about the length of a bank holiday weekend . I'll give one of the Battersea races a lash again in a couple of weeks if i cant do this one.

More worried about it affecting my drinking tbh. Popping pills and lemsips like there's no tomorrow.

I'm in work and it just happened while running down the stairs about an hour ago. Unlike some sadists *cough cough* I don't carry my stick around everywhere with me. Hopefully it'll work when I get back this evening.

Dear god, that fast 200m did you no favours Tuesday night, your calves haven't been 100% for a few weeks now. Who's next to fall by the wayside?

Ye should all be taking Glutamine!!! It's no good for calves but it keeps the colds at bay

It was the hamstrings after the 200's. I Didn't have any particular calf problems. Mind you my calfs have been generally tight for about 6 months since i started concentrating on running off my forefoot.

Have a look at this from the pacing gig in wexford:

I need to start concentrating on getting onto the midfoot.

Take two of these pills every morning, and this stick on every run!

'A' goal for these two onths of training was this race to be honest. I have been training specifically for it since Conn, But absolutely, you're right. I'll not be doing it if there is any kind of niggle later on. Hopefully it is just a bit of prerace madness and the stick will iron it out.

Put Deep Heat on it going to bed and work it in!

I still think it came about as a result of that 200m the other night. Mine was a little niggly after a fast 100m weds night. All out sprinting puts a different strain on muscles and the pulled muscle injury risk is much higher for sprinters over anyone else.

Thats interesting re your forefoot, quite unusual actually. I've learned over the years thats its best not to fck with nature. Even though i'm a heel striker i've no plans on changing it.

I don't remember specifically changing to a forefoot strike. I remember a few years ago trying to run midfoot for about a week, but I haven;t thought about ti since. It may have happenned naturally due to the lower heel as a result of changing from pegasus to Lunarglides. Anyways the change has definately decreased my frequency of injuries. Check out this picture from the Dublin half in 2009 to see the difference:

It was this photo by Woddle last year in Maynooth that showed me i was a heel striker, when compared to kennyb3. I might look into it after Berlin, don't want to risk an injury before then.

Feeling a bit better now. Maybe something to do with the drugs and the trip home for the long weekend though. Not ruling myself out of tomorrow just yet.

Dublin half is a week before Berlin, just gonna be a training run for me. Dunshaughlin 10k or Newark on Trent half in August if you wanna race against me this side of Berlin.

After making a balls of a sub 18 min attempt on Monday in London i was eager to make up for it and run one properly, I flew to Dublin Friday for the bank holiday weekend despite waking up Friday feeling like death. It was touch and go on whether i would race or not but felt much better Fri evening and it was back on.

Arrived about an hour beforehand (early for me), did a warm up jog and a few strides and felt good. The gun went and i eased into it, determined not to shoot off too fast like i did on Monday. First km was 3'30ish and i was holding back big time. Same again on the 2nd km on Chesterfield with a tailwind and a gentle downhill slope. I started catching a few here who had started too fast and had shot their bolt. Down the kyber i was still cruising, but i knew what was coming so just kept the 3'30 pace religiously. Up the military hill and into the expected headwind there was a group of about 7 or 8 on my tail.

I started to push on a bit here and to my surprise i left the whole group behind me for dead and i was 30/40m ahead of them by the top of it. Mr Slow gave me a shout out here (cheers mate) and the headwind turned from strong to gale force. I kept it up around the S bends but boy was it tough here, I looked at the garmin rounding the last of the bends to see 4.7k on the garmin, so i went for it, knewing sub 18 was touch and go. Passed a few up the home straight and saw the clock tick painfully past 18 as i hit the finish line. 18:04 was on the clock, but that was gun time, my garmin said 17:59. This was gonna be a tight run thing and the chip time of 18:00 confirmed my suspicions that I had just missed out, as i had in Barca (3'12'00) and Reading (1'25'01), but when i'm running times like that who honestly cares! The group just behind me with 1.5km to go finished between 20-30 seconds behind me at the finish. I ran the perfect race by the looks of it.

I have to be happy with that, never mind missing the target. It leaves the Leeds run far behind me, it's atonement for Battersea Monday and the sub 3 is now back on for Berlin. Mc millan has me under 30 now for 5 mile, that has to happen this summer and is the definite B goal for the summer. 1.5 mls warm down after with RK and Woddle and a good few pints had after in Ryans and Messrs with assorted boardsies, Munster and Barca won thankfully :D

Jackyback and myself had a 10 euro bet In Barca in March that I would break 18 mins for this race would you believe. I guess I lose, although it may have been 17:59:70 and been rounded up we'll never know so i guess i hold onto my money on a technicality. :p

    Weekly Review, 24 miles and 5 runs. 2 races and 2 pb's :p

Yearly Mileage, 724 miles. It will shoot up over the next few weeks. The 50 mile+ weeks are coming.
