Thanks Machinehead, I used to use Linowsat for that kind of rate data but it is subscription only for the interesting stuff nowadays.

Lots of channels are set not to burst

The Irish channels are set to burst.....much better for stuff like sport. TV3 were pegged at 3mbits constant for along time and sport looked diabolic back then.

They broadcast in HD during the 'trial' around 2007 or 2008. RTE have the cameras and OB capacity.

It will only say HD because it is 1080i. It is only upscaling to 1080i.

It would be a shame if the Champions League final isn't HD next weekend.

A few minutes ago on the Sunday game live commentator Michael Lyster said "Thoes with the technology will be able to watch Cork v Tipp next weak in HD":)

Any idea where the current/live broadcast bit rates for RTÉ Two on Saorview can be found?
PS: I still have poor quality from Maghera only 10-20%, strength @ 100%.

Can you get Knockanore in Tralee? Might be worth a try if you can get Maghera intermittently.

From what I can see, RTE Two is stat muxed between 2 and 9Mbit, most of the time during sport it runs 8Mbit+

Knockanore & Knockmoyle are both much nearer to me but wrong polarity. I have had Maghera @ 100% before & Mulla close to that during testing, but atm I not sure if it's the transmitters not being up to full power or my aerial needs re-alignment. If there's no improvement by launch on Thursday/Saturday, I'll have to get on the roof (again:() & turn the aerial on it's side & see how things go.
    Cheers.

They've said there will be 40% HD content by Sept. That won't be all sport so we should see them by Sept - new season, returning series, new series etc.

Does anyone know if RTE plan to broadcast Blue Bloods in HD next Tuesday? Would be brilliant if they did :)

Can DTT carry 5.1 surround sound?

Anyone know if the Champions League final will be shown in HD on Saturday? Someone mentioned it on the previous page, but it's still unclear. Would be awfully disappointing if they show two GAA games in HD but not the Champions League final.

Magners League Final, Champions League Final & GAA game (from Ulster I think) all in HD as per RTÉ promo today.

Can DTT carry 5.1 surround sound?

Yes, but only if the source program has it and they transmit it. Generally 5.1 is added in cinematic productions for effect. It's very little to do with real surround sound. DTT can use HE-AAC codec for stereo (to save 50% or more bit rate than MP2) or for 5.1

If your receiver does not meet Nordig 2.2 / Saorview spec it may not have HE-AAC.

Your surround amp may not have HE-AAC, some TVs and setboxes can re-encode the audio to DTS and/or DD 5.1 (AC3 codec)

Some ITV1 hd movies have had dts.

    BBC1hd sometimes broadcasts full DD5.1

I have noticed both via an amp with freeview hd.

To be honest it never really struck me as looking that good. Certainly nowhere near the quality of some of the stuff I have seen of BBC HD on Freesat. Maybe I need to go to Specsavers?

Suppose it opens the whole question/myth about how good/poor HD can be, and when is HD not HD.

The picture quality whether in SD or HD all depends on the original source material. Some HD programs may appear more soft than some other HD programs. It is still being broadcast in HD however.

You can see this clearly when watching archive footage. Even if it is broadcast in HD it will still look poor.
News programs are usually a good example showing different quality source material.

A program broadcast live in HD (sports games etc) or a recently made HD program should be the best quality but even that could be poor if not setup correctly.

totally dependent on the compression algorithm used and the compression ratio. the same event on itv and sky sports for example looks significantly better on sky sports due to their almost 2x bitrate for the HD channel

Agree, if only broadcasters would larger bitrates then we would see the most incredible pictures, if source is any good however.

If they did that with their SD channels, many would not bother with HD (especially on TVs of 32" or less) because it can actually look really good.

So keeping SD looking bad ,makes HD look good. Could be true!!

The ad only states that the Magners league final will be in HD.

There appears to be a few ads and other sources of information stating different things.

A radio ad yesterday morning said all 3 were in HD.
