I'm being asked by the club to run track for them. An odd race or 2 would be ok. We nearly always finish our speed sessions with a fast 200/400 and i go flat out and my speed does not go unnoticed. I've kept my track history a secret cause i didnt want to be roped into it. I've had 10 years of it though and i'm happy to keep plodding along in road races for the minute, even if its clear as day that i'm better at the shorter stuff.

How fast would you be hitting 200 and 400 at the moment?

Hard to judge, its nearly always on grass in my runners over sloping terrain. The old speed is still there alright. I am only 26 after all!

Mon 16th May, 4 mls recovery in 36'35 (9'09) over in the heath. Didnt feel like going any faster after yesterdays LSR and tomorrows track session with the club.

Paranoia was abound in London today about the IRA bomb threat. The tubes were half empty, makes a change.

Right now maybe yeah. You gave me a fright in Barca on that track but i still won cosily! It helped that i gained a yard on you when you slipped at the start.

That yard is what you won by in the end.

It cant have helped that I was wearing Jesus sandels mind you :)

I was wearing nike free's, not exactly ideal sprinting shoes either. I was also slow and fat (by my standards) last July don't forget. So when's the rematch? Daegu? :p

Tues 17th May, Headed down to Finsbury Park for the track session with the club. Plan for tonight was 5km of continuous running comprising of 5 x 800m with 200m jog/slow run recovery after each 800m.

Times were; 2'46, 2'47, 2'46, 2'47, 2'44. The 200 jogs, which were done in lane 2/3 were just over 60 secs each. Finished in 19'21 overall for the 5k. It must have been at least 50m further though. I wasn't flat out for the 800's and there's more in the tank. This type of session is new to me and i wanted to make sure I would last it out. Its a whole lot tougher than 5 x 800m off 2 mins rest thats for sure.

600m w/u, 800m w/d for 4 mls total. Crap mileage but thats fairly irrelevant i think. There's a flat 5k in London next Monday evening i'm thinking about doing. Might try for sub 18 there and go again in Donore if i miss it there. I'm sick and tired of hills in races and i want flat ones from here to Berlin.

Not for me, they just don't suit me at all. North London would have to be the hilliest part of London though  I've pretty much ruled myself out of all the phoenix park races this year as pb attempts cause of those bloody hills! My pb's are all so rock solid now that I need flat races to set new ones.

Train properly on the hills in London and you'll pb in the race series with ease. You know full well that training on the hills will improve your overall performance.

Ah sure i know it's the one training element i try to avoid, there's infinite places to do hill reps here too. I just suck at it and it's human nature to avoid doing things we are crap at. No i'm just gonna do the 5 mile as a tempo run and the 10 mile as a MP run. The half will just replace the last LSR before Berlin.

Man up and starting working on your limiters....embrace the pain and suffering of hill repeats:) It will come in handy for Conn

Well i've another 10 days to decide about Conn before my get out clause is over. Once i have a few pints in me in Ryans after Donore i'll probably end up doubling the bet or something stupid like that. I'm planning a spring marathon, not sure which one but Conn is not on my radar tbh. I might try and squeeze in a bi monthly hill session over the next few weeks not making any promises though.

Weds 18th May, Headed down to the club training but i was never doing the session (hill reps would you believe) so i joined 5/6 other lightweights for the easy run option. Did 5 mls in 42'22 (8'28), legs a bit heavy after last nights session. I had planned on doing 10/12 tomorrow but not sure i'll feel up to it. No LSR this weekend if i'm racing on Monday so i should probably grind it out tomorrow.

I can see the oh so bright future of ultra running man Brian Den in 10 days times. It will be cemented and set in stone.

    The begenning of the end

Some say my running career ended the day i switched to road running in 2005, some may be right.

Don't worry i won't be doing Conn any time soon.

Thurs 19th May, Midweek LSR tonight. Plan was for 12 ish miles around 8 min miling. Felt good from the outset as i headed down to Hyde Park through Primrose and Regent's park. Picked up the pace a a bit around Hyde park still feeling good and as i hit Regents on the way back after 10 miles in 77mins i said i'd give a few sub 3 MP (6'49) miles a lash. Ended up doing 4 of these and it wasnt easy but i could have done a few more at least. Eased off the last mile as a warm down. Finished in town and the tube back up north was quite a welcome sight i have to say. 15 mls total in 1'53'41 (7'34)

    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/86693736

Really happy with that run, only 2 days after the 19'20 for 5k+ (in which i jogged 20% of it) on the track. Big confidence boost after the debacle of Leeds. Would be nice to do a run like this every 2nd Thursday, why not? One of the key sessions i posted in the seasoned marathoners thread was 10mls followed by 10 at MP. I feel i could build up to that over the next few months. Gonna be fairly sh*gged tomorrow so may take a rest day.

Sat 21st May, 5 mls easy in 42'12 (8'27) in the heath. Felt ok after a mile or 2 after a sluggish start. Rest day yesterday helped, was fairly tired after Thursdays monster run. Same again tomorrow and Battersea after work on Monday for the 5k.

Sun 22nd May, 4 mls slow in 35'06 (8'47). Bit of a mini taper for tomorrow.

Weekly Review, 37 miles and 6 runs. Thursdays run being the highlight. 18 weeks to Berlin today. Time to get the finger out. After next weekend smile.gif

A massive shift in my outlook on Irish races for the rest of the year occurred during the week. Waterford half in December and maybe Dunshaughlin are the only 2 races i'll be racing in Ireland this year, the rest will just be training runs. Its too much hastle and spoils the weekend (no Friday/Saturday night pints etc). Better to target the local races over here. Reading was streets ahead of any race i've done in Ireland and it really opened my eyes, there is a big world out there!

    Yearly Mileage, 700 miles.

Mon 24th May, Battersea Park 5k.

Right time to stop pretending last night didnt happen. After a couple of easy days i headed down for this race with sub 18 in mind. After being stuck in work till 6 , enduring rush hour tubes and a warm up consisting of running though Victoria station to make a train i arrived at the race HQ with 6 mins to spare and lined up near the front. I shot off like an idiot, way too fast. I then looked down at my garmin which, to my horror, i forgot to start it. This was a killer for my pacing, the km splits meant nothing to me. I finally started it about 500m in and the watch showed 3'20km pacing. So much for 3'36's . First km on the garmin showed 3'24, then 3'30. Passing halfway (2 lap race) the clock showed 8'40. "Well done you tit" I said to myself as the group i was running with disappeared into the distance.

The pace dropped to 4'00's and i gave up. I said i would just coast in now and get under 20 and chalk it down as a good training run if nothing else. Felt like i was jogging the last 2km and as i hit the last 100m i thought i would be lucky if i was under 20. The clock showed 18'42 as i finished, a PB by 5 seconds (well i did 18'15 on a solo time trial in 2006 but it wasnt a race). However that PB was set in the boards ac race last November and i am way ahead of that now. I left a faster time behind if i bothered over the last 2km but once sub 18 was gone i eased off. The group i was running with ended in 17'20-17'30, and i had no business running with them and i made a balls of the race tbh. Never have i been so disappointed after a PB, and my mood was quite dark last night. My natural speed really counts against me in these 5k's, it makes this fast pace seem comfortable for 2k or so then kabooooooom, and i must learn to rein it in early on in the future. Starting my garmin at the start line would be a nice start , you wouldnt believe how much you'd miss it.

The future being the Donore 5k on Saturday, i should be well recovered by then, entered today despite the ash looming over the UK. If my flights cancelled its cancelled, i wont cry over it. I'd be more sickened to miss Tipp vs Cork on Sunday tbh. I wasnt gonna do this race till last night but i have unfinished business with the 5k and i just gotta nail one before i move on to proper Berlin training.

Tues 24th May, 6.5 mls easy recovery run in 54'13 (8'49) down to regents park and back. Legs felt fairly fresh. Pay day today so got a pair of Brooks racers and Asics 2160's, both were needed. My other shoes are starting to go flat. I'll test out the racers tomorrow to see if i'll use them on Saturday.

I'd be screwed without the Garmin, bad luck on not getting what you wanted but still a savage time by any standard.

My God, my PB is faster than yours for 5k. Why didn't anyone tell me?

Ok i know it won't last past Saturday but i'm going to enjoy it while it lasts.:D

In all seriousness, if you did that time with all the problems beforehand when you get everything in your favour, you'll put a right dent in that time.

Ya i never properly raced a 5k or a 10k (10k pb is 41'06 from the 10k mark in DCM 07) I'm not so sure i'll get under your 18'28. My body seems to want to either go fast for a shorter race or slow and controlled for a half or marathon and i don't seem to know how to race a 5k properly, lack of experience in it really is the problem. But yeah i should be in the low 18's i know.

18:01 would be just fine thanks. Bet or no bet.

Weds 25th May, 5 mls easy in 40'08 (8'02). Felt good tonight in the glorious sunshine, great weather for obama's bbq! Ran in the new racers and they feel fine and i'll use them on Saturday. Did 8 x 100m, mostly in 18/19 seconds, then let loose the last one to clock a 13. Easy one tomorrow and rest/travel Friday before Donore.
